    are these any good?
having had a mk1 tt, R32 these run with haldex to control quattro system, I understand its different on the B7 being more permanent?

Is there a requirement for quattro service, cambelt etc.?

    mpg, running cost?
main appeal is quattro system, but other thoughts are turning towards bmw touring (please do not let this turn into a rwd vs quattro debate)

what to look out for etc.

are there two variants 203bhp and 233bhp?

is space the same as a B6 avant?
what's room like with baby, toddlers, travel systems etc.?

I had exactly the same decision when I got mine, it was between the BMW and A4. I went for the A4 purely because the right one came up at the right time.
There's not as much space as you'd think there is. You'll be ok as long as you only have one child, but space is limited. This is the same with both cars though, a friend has just swapped his 3 series for an A6 due to space issues and he only has one child.
Realistically, you're looking around 35mpg, obviously depending how you drive.
Servicing costs at main dealers can be very high, around the £400-£450 mark.
These cars are great fun though and the engine seems to be solid with no real issues. I have no experience of the auto but others will come along and tell you if they are good or not.

I have a 3.0TDi SE Quattro Tiptronic saloon. It's the TDV version with 230bhp (the 233 you mentioned is the PS figure). Get this one if you can. Not only is it faster and more economical than the 204 bhp version, but the emissions are lower, so the tax disc is cheaper.

Like Rowdyboy says, it's a terrific car. He and I will argue all day about whether manual or auto is best, but we both agree on pretty much everything else. Fuel consumption ranges from 30mpg around town to 45mpg on a motorway cruise, with an average of around 35mpg. Very fast, very smooth, and it doesn't need a cambelt change, because the camshafts are chain-driven. The quattro system needs no separate servicing.

well i've been looking and to be honest for a half decent one don't come cheap and was hoping it was lower in cost, but for similar money i think i'll look at the 535d tourings ;-)

Pics sent to your email, but there's an oops involved. As I was hitting "send", I realised I'd forgot to re-size them, so I cancelled (or so I thought), re-edited and re-sent the email with the pics reduced to a sensible file size. Unfortunately, while I was doing that, the original decided to resend itself in the background, so I've ended up sending it twice, and rather overloading your inbox with mahoosive files.

    Sorry about that.
