Symptoms of thermostat gone?

    What are the usual symptoms of a thermostat that has gone?

    My 1.8T doesn't warm up the water anywhere near as quick as my 3 previous VAG cars. After some spirited driving for about 10miles yesterday I noticed it still wasn't at 90deg :shrug:

    Been through a few thermostats, always bad one never reach 90 degree when moving, first one sat at about 80, one at the moment doesnt even register.
    If you leave the car idle it should hit 90 but when you get moving it'll drop below and stick there again!
    My experience if replacing go official Audi, the ones i bought from eurocar parts have always been crap and failed weeks later again!

    10 mins normal driving should have it at 90 easy...

    Who manufactures thermostats, surely Audi dont have their own thermostat factory?

    Edit: Or do Euro Parts supply Chinese made ones?

    eurocarparts have em dunno if theyre chinese. mines been alright since changed had it over a year now.

    Mine was reaching 110c as it was stuck on a small loop apparently. ive heard the opposite also like it never reaches about 75-80 being stuck on the larger loop

    I've fitted 3 ECP thermos to various 1.8Ts in the past and never has a problem with one of them - weird.... lol

    mines been fine welly mate either im silly or u misread but i meant my one was fine and the symtoms i described was what was happening before i changed it. :)

    How easy it is to change the thermostat? Is it below the intake manifold?

    Mine's doing the same Ant - sits at about 80deg C unless I'm stuck in traffic. Always used to sit at 90deg C after 10mins of driving normally. Changed the temp sensor just to rule it out without any improvement. Sure it's the thermostat.

    Maybe you could come over & we'll have a "thremostat replacement" race? Me with my OCD tool set and you with your shambles crow-bar and gaffer tape...

    Er, you appear to have forgotten to put some bits back on there mate.

    Is it running at 90deg now?

    Yeah running fine now!

    IF I was to do another one, I would take the inlet manifold off to start with, it only takes a few mins to take the mani off and it gives you so much more room to work! I had minimal fluid loss too, took the rubber pipe off and propped it up out the way, then lost a big when swapping the actual thermostat.

    Also I snapped the dipstick tube for good measure!

    I remember when I did mine. Just took that plate off that connects the dipstick, removed the dipstick and got to work with a wrench, extension bar and an elbow joint. Took me About 4 hours in very low light, and did it mainly by feel. PITA!!! Never doing it that way again!!

    You must be mad dude... once you've done it one without taking anything else off it's easy from then on. It's all about tool selection, thats all.

    Anyway, glad it's all OK now :)

    do you need a new gasket now you've taken the inlet manifold off?

    As I have found out now, yes!

    Welly, I tried a 10mm ratchet spanner, 1/4" ratchet, by hand all 3 with both the 10mm socket and 5mm hex. Tried a UJ at one point but that was a no go. Top bolt is easy, bottom one is a pig!

    Did this today, few extensions and a bendy joint thing and had it done pretty quickly, didn't have to remove anything other than the front engine cover and the dipstick holder.

    Made an attempt last night but the bottom bolt was not having it lol. I used a 10mm spanner but there simply wasn't any space for movement

    You need either a long ball ended allen key or to try harder with the 10mm.

    I did one in the road outside my house in 45mins with nothing but a 10mm spanner.

    I've had most success using 1/4" extension (wobble or UJ) bar, socket and a small ratchet.

    I remove as much ancillary crap as I can be bothered to. On the S3 I removed the alternator lead. (D/C the battery first).
