I'm hoping someone can help clear this up for as I don't think it's particularly clear. Myself and a friend have swapped cars. We both have personal plates that we now want to swap between the two vehicles. I have found the following form on the DVLA site which appears to be the correct one but I can't determine whether this will only transfer the number plate one way!

    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/209585/V317_140313.pdf

From what I understand this form will only cover one plate from a car to another. So do I require two forms and two payments of £80 to swap the plates or does the one form cover it? Has anyone done this and know the answer?

    Thanks in advance,

You need two forms. 80 quid for each transfer.

It's a bit more complex than that, you need to take the plate off one car and retain it first, £105?, get the V5C back, then transfer the plate over from one car to the other whilst updating ownership, then once the new V5C comes back for the other car, then you can stick the other plate on.

If it's actually possible to swop plates over on 2 different cars that belong to two different people, I'd like to know how!

You could "Gift" the plate to your mate and visa versa. DVLA will issue you with a new reg (probably the original reg) and then you can apply to have the personal plate transferred onto your car. Bit of a pain as you will have to wait for the V5 to come back with the new reg before you can transfer the personal plate.

I'll stick both forms in the same envelope and that should help the DVLA out a bit.

    Thanks for the comments guys.
