hi folks well over the last few days when driving my car the gears are getting a little crunchy (technical term that is lol) and tonight i opened my bonnet to find my engine bay around by the battery covered in oil (think it gearbox oil) its not dripping wet soaked in it but you can tell there is oil there , it looks like its coming from where the passenger side drive shaft goes into the gearbox are the seals easy to replace ?? , is it a sign of my gearbox about to blow AGAIN need advice a.s.a.p as last time it cost a friggin fortune to fix resulting in a second hand gearbox being used
    cheers me dears
    fran :( :(
. ps im most upset about my OCD clean engine bay getting dirty lol

Sorry to hear that Fran, sound expensive.

Hard to say without seeing it, but if you get it to a specialist they'll be able to give you a better diagnosis.

Are you hearing any grinding from the box?

I've got fingers toe's legs and everything else crossed its just a seal thats gone , no warren its drives all fine not a single noise only as i put it in gear its a tad notchy/crunchy and said oil over the engine bay , cost me over £650 to get it done last time and that was a second hand box too :(

edit : also the clutch seams all ok the clutch point is the same and is not slipping at all , the clutch was replaced about 25k ago

If it's gearbox oil you should be able to tell because it stinks, really horrible smell. It could be a CV boot thats gone and sprayed grease everywhere that was my first thought anyway. Alot easier and cheeper to fix too.

yeah I'm going to investigate more tomorrow , if it is the cv boot thats gone what could be causing the crunching gears lol

Hoope I'm not hijacking this thread with my first post, but does anyone recognise the below issue??

I have an oil leak from the gearbox of the wifes 2006 A3 2.0T Quattro.

The oil is leaking from the end of a cylinder which can be seen through an inspection hatch in the wheel arch of the passenger front side.

The plastic cover at the end seems to be slightly degraded and I'm not sure if the leak is at the perimiter of this cover or from the centre of it.

    See photo's

    Questions:

    What is this part called?

What is behind the plastic cover?

Might this be a simple plastic cover and associated seal change out?

    Is this more sinister?

    Any help whatsoever appreciated

thats a seal whch is easy to replace had to do mine as was leaking dosnt take long theres bearings behind there.
use special sealant when refitting new one.
