Im a noob in this area but I know Impreza's make that rumbling sound because they have a boxer engine configuration, people also stick on unequal length headers to get the rumble more defined. Is it possible to stick unequal length exhaus manifolds on our 1.8t's to get it rumbling? I quite like that low rumbling sound, quite god of thunderish like

Ah leave the poor chap alone lmao. But yeh forget about making it sound like a subaru.

If its a 1.8t then get it sounding like a very exspensive dyson that when on full chat hoovers up small children :)

If its a non turbo a3, then sell it and buy a 1.8t.

Drill the air box so it looks like a cheese grater , 9" slash cut jap back box, remap it to the heavens , and then pull out a coil pack ! That ought to do it ..... Waaaalaah

Lol...... And no I don't like angel eyes on an Audi ! On BMW's I've had they looked awesome but not on an Audi ( just my opinion and each to their own klappe16)

Lol at all the replies, it does make me laugh when people hate certain cars because they associate certain stereotypes with them. My questions a bit more technical than wanting it to sound like a subaru, I'm sure there are other people who wonder why the car makes that noise and if it can be replicated on other cars, not just audi's or subarus etc. I'm not a supporter of "chav cars" by any means, I even think the Citroen Saxos a nice little car when given the subtle euro treatment and I know people will still disagree, whats wrong with experimenting with the sound track of your car anyway? You do it with the power and the looks, why make an A3 look like a S3? Why do a big turbo conversion when you could just buy a more powerful car? Anyway theres no reasoning with some people, dont mean to go on and on because I expected that kind of response anyway, welcome to the internet :)

Good measured response :applaus: I was expecting you to kick off but respect to you sir.
The 1.8t does sound like a diesel and unless you drown it out with an induction and exhaust it'll always sound that way.

LOL, I don't think Subaru's or Saxo's are chavy, each to there own as everyone has there own taste, but there are people on the internet who have a thing called a sense of humor and I am sure you are one of them!
Good clean fun on a Sunday is all it amounts to mate, I hope you get what your after!

Its the fact youv asked if you can make it sound like a boxer engine, thats like saying can i make it sound like a V6 or V12 or a ****le or 2 stroke lawnmower, the fact is they are completley diffrent and have inherant traits due the their design.

So if you have a 1.8t then its good to get it sounding as it should, same as a subaru, it has its own distinctive sound and is awesome, not just to conform, because all setups sound diffrent, including subarus.

Edit* why has it censored my term for rotary enging?lol

I wonder how the thread would have turned out if i asked "why do boxer engines sound the way they do? is it something to do with the exhaust manifold or the engine configuration?". I could have maneuvered the the thread towards trying to replicate it on other cars without getting slated lol. I do like technical replies so that may have worked :p Anyone see topgear? jezza's explaination of a boxer engine sound was the arrival of an imbecile but you know he loved it really lol

To be fair though, he did it to me first.

He has spent 80% of his life making me feel hugely inferior to him, so some 6AM annoyance is the least he can expect as payback. And he did do it first...

He boiled the brakes on my 205GTI; so I drove his A3 with no brake fluid.

It's all tit for tat and totally justified IMO.

I missed the insults, hope it was a good one. :beerchug:

Oh and Subaru's sound the way they do for a number of reasons, firing order, manifolds, opposed pistons, but mainly because in a 4 cylinder inline engine, there's a secondary force imbalance, because the pistons coming up move (say, 2 and 3) at slightly different speeds to those coming down (1 and 4)

To create a boxer from an inline 4, (in abstract terms of cylinder balancing!) cylinders 2 and 4 are rotated about the crank by 180 degrees.

So, the secondary force imbalance contribution from the cylinders 1 and 3 is now (almost) balanced by that from 2 and 4 as they are now on opposite sides of the crank - the ony reason why they don't fully balance in all senses is the cylinder offset, and so, there's no unbalanced force, but there is an unbalanced secondary moment.

With regards to the manifolds being a flat engine, some constraints are imposed on the manifold design.

On an inline 4 engine, the equivalent would be a manifold where cylinders 1 and 2 formed one downpipe, and cylinders 3 and 4, the other. Owing to the distance across the engine, these 2 downpipes must remain independant for a longer distance than would otherwise be the case. An odd layout for an inline engine, but, almost enforced on the Subaru.

In practice, there's one short pipe, and one long one, to move the exhaust away from the centreline of the car, and I think it's this asymmetry that makes these cars sound a bit rough even when they're running right.

The actual combustion is even but the uneven distance that the sound/pressure wave travels cause the 'burble'.

See, I really am the fountain of all knowledge.

This thread has been an entertaining read!

The OP might be on to something here, have a look at this video review of the new Clio RS 4m14 in R-sound, select your engine sound via the stereo. I'm sure they'd add Scooby burble if you asked nicely.
