Stuck Clutch Peddle

As I was approaching a round about I pressed the clutch peddle to change gear. I noticed something wasn’t right.

The clutch peddle hadn’t returned to its normal position. Thinking it had got caught in the carpet I tried and release it. But it wasn’t caught.

I hit hard on the clutch peddle with my foot a couple of times which finally released it. This is the first time it’s happened.

Does anyone have any ideas to prevent this happening again?

I had this happen with my 02 S3...of all places on the quarter mile sprint! and its happened once since in three and a half years so I wouldn't worry unless it becomes regular.
