Strutt size (help please)

Looking to get some coilovers in the next week or so think im going for ap's or weintec's. but after research talk of strutt size 50mm or 55mm has got me worrying. What do i need to know exactly before purchasing some coils. My car is a a3 2.0tdi 54plate. Also does anyone know of anywhere that would supply and fit coils at a reduced price.

Pretty sure it's 55mm on all A3 2.0 TDI.

I don't know what 54 plate means, but my A3 is a 2005, and it's 55mm.
