I fitted a custom catch can a few weeks back now with the outlet currently vented to atmosphere.
It was time to check the car over and mini service before winter... I thought this would be a good time to empty the catch can?
So... i wedged a small cup under the drain plug...unscrewed it.
Nothing came out. Nothing at all, Is this normal? I expected at least a splash, But nothing .

Depends on wether and how the catch can is baffled as alot of the unbaffled ones will let most of the vapours pass straight out the outlet before condensing to a liquid

Would expect to still see some in there though?

I've been emptying loads out of mine and that's 1 year it has been installed.

Mine doesn't vent to atmosphere though, it re-circulates back in to the TIP and I wonder if that results in more being sucked through when on vacuum.

When it's cold up here my catch can has been known to almost fill up in 3 weeks.

I would expect a Baffled can to collect water and oil mix which is its purpose to stop it re entering the tip,the way I look at it the hot steam has no restrictions on a non baffled can so exits with no hold ups but the baffled slows the flow so cools and stays inside. Or am I talking waffle as usual lol.

Mine didn't fill up at all when I first fitted it, then I realised the drainage screw wasn't done up and I'd been oiling my subframe ;)

As i was fitting my new filter today i took the opportunity to empty my catch can for the first time.

Its been on for about 2-3 months now of which i first vented to the TIP and have since changed to venting to atmos. The catch can was about 3/4`s full so about 200ml of stuff, most of which seemed to be condensation that has reformed into water plus some oily mayo type stuff too. All cleaned out and but back together so will check it again in a couple of months.

If you were to take the boost hose off at the throttle body it should be nice and clean. That's what it's all about ;)

yup i took off the throttlebody and cleaned it all up about a month ago (never done it before on this car) so had 10 years of crud on it and some oily residue etc but with a bit of electrcal cleaner and some elbow grease and it was looking nice and proper shiney when it went back together. So will do it again in a few months time and hope to see it all shiney still :)

To be honest the most surprising place i found loads of cruddy oily stuff was in the old SMIC`s when i took it off to put my FMIC on!
