    Guys,

Strange fault developed with my car. It drives smoothly all the time and is super economical, but when you try and take it over 5krpm, it just bogs down. Almost feels like a fuel cut. Does it in all gears tested.

No fault codes recorded, but what do you think it could be? Would faulty coils / bad HT leads / old spark plugs cause this problem? Faulty AFM?

    Car is a '99 1.6i sport.

    Any ideas?

I have the same car and mine does exactly the same, I just assumed it was the rev limiter.

Dav, no mate - the rev limiter isn't at 5krpm (at least it shouldn't be!)

If it had a turbo I would be checking the pipes right now. So frustrating as I know my way around a RB, SR, CA and MX5 engines - but this one is just so foreign!

Ah bugger! Guess I'll be following this thread closely then. Have made any engine mods to yours? I found out yesterday mine is overcooling too.

Nope - mine is completely standard in every way (for now).

No point in modding a 1.6 engine... if you want performance then buy a bigger engine / turbo'd car. In my opinion of course :)

I didn't know if you'd changed air filters or anything. How about the running temp on yours? Mine gets to 90 then the fan cuts in and it drops back to just above the 60 mark and stays there.

    Temps rock solid at 90deg.

Did have to change out the coolant temp sensor not long ago - but the problem was there before that.

Right I've just been up and spoken to the man at RSD and firstly I have a problem which is that my car comms doesn't work, but we have had a good chat and reckon that on mine it's either an intermittent issue with the water temp sensor, cuz it usually gets to 90 then cools to 60 but now sits sweet as a nut at 90, or it's the MAF sensor. I'll be dropping the car in there for them to play with for a day and hopefully they'll solve the temp issue, 5k rev brick wall issue and the comms issue all in one hit.

Will be very useful if they did the cooling - then you test the 5k brick wall, then the MAF and see what happens... that way it will help me too :)

a similar problem keeps occuring with other cars, normally coils throw up a fault, it could be the MAF, try unplugging that and going for a drive, that may make a difference......if it doesnt theres a chance it could be the engine speed sensor mounted just above the oil filter.....

Dav, i cant see the coolant issue being linked to the MAF sensor unless im missing something, defo never heard of that before..... usually with these its either your engine coolant sensor or the thermostat...MAF may be a red herring used by some mechanics as it can be the cause of many faults and an excuse to change it...id bet its the latter two issues

Dude I'm agreeing with you, the fact that yesterday the temp behaved how it should tells me that the sensor is working properly albeit temporarily and it still wouldn't rev hard. Plus Speedfreeks temp is spot on makes me think it has nothing to do with it either(it's just something else I gotta sort on mine). The MAF would make sense. On mine it was doing it before I fitted the induction kit as well as after. Although Danny(RSD) seems convinced it's something to with the coolant and he does know his stuff. Tbh if it had 2 wheels and a bank of 4 carbs I could sort it, even 4 wheels and a carb but if I don't have the slightest clue where to begin I'm going leave it alone until either I do know or someelse can sort it for me.

Reckon we'll find out sooner rather than later cuz I've just had to leave my car at RSD due to a blown head gasket :(

Right, I found out what that 5k brick wall is on mine!!!!! On the throttle cable there is a clip that is broken so when I plant my right foot the cable moves so far then the outer cable moves too. When the pedal is floored the cable didn't open the butterfly fully. Try the butterfly on yours with the pedal on the floor, it should wide open. If it isn't check the cable.
That's the cheap fix on mine. The blown head gasket turns out to be a cracked head AND cracked the barrel!! But the surgeons are hard at work ;)
