Good idea. I do have an alarm but by the time I'd get down stairs they'd be gone. I do over 20k a year so TDI makes sense right now. S3 might be on the list in a few years time.

Sorry but I'd rather wake up in the morning to find the car gone. Last thing I'd want is some twat with a knife waking me up demanding my keys, if he gets in he's welcome to the keys my life is far more important than my car.
Hopefully it never comes to that though, neighbour has just taken delivery of a BMW M2 so with any luck they'd take his first!

To the OP glad you got this all sorted quick, new car is stunning.

    Enjoy

There was some exaggeration in my earlier comment - they are obviously not under my pillow are they are kept upstairs in a safe place.

But you've made me give this further thought and I've been pondering the decision recently anyway, whether to leave the keys in an obvious place downstairs so that, in the worst case scenario, said scumbag is able to take keys easily rather than venturing upstairs in search of them....

But how many car thieves would actually go upstairs in a house in search of keys? Surely this is too risky and chance of waking the homeowner?

What do people think on this?

Think you'd be surprised what they might do for the keys. Have a google for stolen S3 it's frightening.

People do it in search of cash when there's no guarantee there's any in the house, if there's a guaranteed £30k+ car on the drive I'm sure they wouldn't be too fussed, after all they've broken into your house with no concern about you being there.

If they're willing to break in to your house to steal a car I don't think the majority of them would have a problem running upstairs. Have you any kids? Imagine one of them getting up for the loo during the night and being confronted by some scumbag halfway up the stairs...

Exactly, not worth the risk imo. Leave them on one of the bottom steps on your stairs or put them on the counter top on the kitchen

I should find the link to my full post describing the time when an armed gang in balaclavas stormed my house, smashed the front door off it's hinges and then smashed the bedroom door off the frame - while I tried to keep them out.....thinking (wrongly) I had the keys in the bedroom.

10 years ago on 22nd Aug.

    Not fun belive me.
Was for an R32 and Mini Cooper S.

Just found this link on golfmk7.com. its alarming how easy it is to defeat a standard lock.

    https://www.euro-secure.com/lock-snapping/

This product looks pretty good. No prices on the website but definitely worth thinking about

My keys are kept with me at all times and if anyone dare try coming for them they'd be met with serious fire power in return. Good luck :D

I'm getting really bad water stripes on my windscreen, not clearing properly. Could this be the blades?

Some scumbag standing over you with a kitchen knife in bed isn't gonna be met with serious fire power mate...

As tough as us Scottish are we wouldn't be doing anything over then handing over the keys

My main key is with me all the time, in the very rare occasion the car is at the house and I'm not. I've left one key in a semi obvious place to protect my family if the worst ever happened. Not in clear sight, but where you would check on the hunt. I plan on upgrading the doors soon, not sure how to do it with a wooden front door though really.

The worrying thing is - you don't know how you will react!
Unless you have been specially trained (military) for such a high stress situation.

I have been a boxer - now boxing coach for years.
My natural reaction (unfortunately) is to hit and not get hit. I train hours a week doing it.
Not too smart if they are armed. Strangely, robbers don't obey the Queensbury rules.

I have had to come up with an alternative 'drill' to overcome natural reaction.

Speak for yourself fella, it's already happened here. There's now a set of two dobermans either entrance of the house now though and they are very vocal at the slightest noise at night. They're even trained to bark when the security light comes on. If you want to bow down to them and hand over the keys to your car then on your head be it ;)

That's slightly different mate, if you don't have any dogs and as I said in my post, there's a guy with a knife standing over you in bed you're hardly gonna jump up and kick seven shades of sh*te out of him are you...

Well like I said, speak for yourself. As someone eluded to earlier - you don't know how you'd react but I wouldn't be handing my keys over in a hurry that's for sure. You've got to make it as hard as possible for them, so aside from the dogs, the security lights etc, it's also boxed in with the other family cars in the household each night.

I don't disagree on the slightest with any security measures in place. I'd just rather hand over my keys than get stabbed in the neck... I wouldn't call that being a pussy either, I'd call that being smart

Not at all, and no disrespect to yourself I wouldn't think of you any less for handing them over. But it wouldn't be me. Say, have you got your S3 yet? Not even sure if you've one on order but there was a Daytona Grey S3 Saloon sat beside mine yesterday in Bellfield, private reg on it.

It's all based on situations but I'm with you. I just think of what has happened, like the young lad permenantly blinded for thieves throwing acid in his face in a petrol station.. all for a car and an S3 at that. Perhaps if I had someone banging on the window you'd try to make off, but someone holding a knife / gun at you with the window down or outside the car, I would be passing the key. I don't and never will understand the mentality of the people who think it's acceptable to cause injury to somebody for a piece of metal let alone death!! The world is a f***** up place.

A guy local to me sold his Focus ST to someone up country, £7-£8k track modified car.. a couple of months later he posted online that it had been stolen. They had broken into a young couples house, stabbed the guy and beat his girlfriend up. Stabbing someone for a forecourt priced £7k Focus, several hundred quid on the black market?! Why?!
I love my car and I'd be in bits if anything happened to it, but there is a line.

I leave the keys where they can easily find them, I don't even bother putting the pro lock on now...it's almost 2.5 years old and covered by gap, so if they take it I get a nice new one :)
