Lol am looking forward to seeing what this can do? Will it be the most powerfull 1.8t blocked S3 in the country if all goes well?

Bill whats your opinions on the turbo upgrade? I know weve talked about it already but that was before i work out the surface area of the manifold?

Am still waiting on cr's to give me some measurements about comp cover sizes but if it will fit i may be looking at going 4 inch tip some how, will i need to go back down to 3" after turbo inlet or will i need a 4" maf and filter?

Cr's are strongly pushing me to the full sized cover if it will fit due to the anti surge machining do you think that this is essential?

Cheers in advance as always bill :superman:

Gotta love the Badgerwagon, have you managed to rev it in anger on the road or dyno yet bill? :)

Got a reply out of atp turbo this morning that has cheered me up a bit and think i will definately go ahead with this route now on the current manifold set up, heres the latest email to atp and response :)

Hi following previous disscussions with yourself about a gtx3071 0.63 turbo with a k26 housing, i'm still concerned about the flow possibilitys of this turbine housing idealy i don't want to have to change my manifold/downpipe set up to a t3 setup but having known friends having difficulties with the gt3071's on t25 housings due to egts and the housings not being big enough.
I was wondering if it was possible to get a photo of this garrett/k26 housing next to a t3 as the pictured one on the site looks bigger than my current one (in body width, which is a good thing) but have scoured the web and cant find any pictures of this housing apart from identicle one to the ones you have got.
I dont mean to be a complete pain in the arse but just want to get the best idea of my options and how they will bode before i buy from yourselves

    Many thanks stacey

    Stacey,
GT3071R in T25 is "GT3071R-WG" = not a full size GT3071R because the turbine wheel has been trimmed down from the 60mm size to the 56.5mm size in order to "stuff" it into the GT28 turbine housing (T25 flanged).
Garrett GT3071R Turbo Ball Bearing Turbo : atpturbo.com
It's quite a "compromise" to the turbine side.
That is why backpressure and EGT's are high.
Our rendition of the "K26" housing is built from the same T3 casting as the "T3" housing.
Look in this "full size" GT3071R turbo link with the "full size" 60mm turbine wheel.
Look at the turbine housing choices.
Scroll down to the 3rd turbine housing choice (K26) and then look at the 4th turbine housing choice (T3). You'll notice that they are built from the same casting. Flow is indentical. We just shape the "external" packaging of the "K26" variation to fit into a K26 environment.
    Make sense?
    Good questions though

So now only waiting on some measurements from cr's, might try and see if i can source the info from somewhere else so things can get underway ;)

Impressive build and clearly a lot of graft went into the build and this thread.

    Thank you for posting.

I imagine it'll be like writing an essay again after all these years!

My T25 plus housing was a T3 drilled for a T25 and originally a 4 bolt downpipe fitment but machined for 2.5" V-Band... full T3 flow potential and it shows too.. guess ATP are quite good at this kinda modding of hotsides as they have all sorts of versions kicking about..

Good news for you though :D

Cheers mate have been meaning to do it for a while but has only really come a crop due to being off sick after having an op on my knee last friday and typically my luck my playstation gave up the ghost on my second day off :crying:

Couldn't bare daytime tv as was climbing the walls after 1 day so hence the build thread appeared, theres plenty of detail and woes that have been missed out but it was generally to give people a quick runthrough of where im up to in the build and to kill some time of coarse ;)

Glad yours is going well mate will be interesting to see how the final result comes out as got a friend who will more than likely be following the hybrid route and am helping him to start to collect parts ready for it, keep us posted how yours progresses :)

Cheers mate have definately got to jump on this and get things in motion as have got some time off that i should use and abuse at my gain, cant go back to work until 100% as spend half of my time on my knees so i'm sure i can use it constructively on my car in the mean time ;)

    >80mm MAF when you exceed its flow significantly.. which is ~365bhp region on normal scaling...
S4 or RS4 maf next steps....

Are you sure you can fit a larger comp cover and clear your prop donut?
    well close!

Have just got off of the phone with cr's and they're going to see if they can send me a mock up turbo to trial fit, have also now got some measurements from them to attempt to measure up :)
The 28 comp cover is 16cm diameter where as gtx30 is 19cm, do you think the antisurge cover is nessassary as atp sell them with compact comp cover?

Also bill do you sell the egt boss's to weld in the downpipe? As the new housing hasn't got provision for it?

    Welly lmao.. horny bumble ;)

I have a couple of egt bungs for OE probes left currently..

I've not had surge on my GT35 which did'nt have anti surge... and not encountered surge on no ported comp housings as yet.... he says in "famous last words" styleee

I would like to know what effect the comp cover is having to overall flow..

Yeah am very curious to how anti surge covers effect flow, don't completely understand how they work really but that's just me being uneducated ;)

How much you want for the boss posted bill?

I just want to make sure everything is cool before i take it in as i still have a idle problem that could be the brake booster hose and seal, when its has a stable idle i'll get it booked in. I don't want to be disappointed with the results so thats why its mods after mods, Its running but just on a base map.

I've also been busy with working 6-7 day weeks and 7am to 10pm on them day. Time is my biggest enemy right now.

great picture by the bay Bill. Looks like the engine has a hard on for something in the workshop

I know the feeling re time.. My tgt over xmas was to get it running on its new engine, which was accomplished.. and ever since I have tried to get it actually run in... with a couple of teething issus, and mostly time getting in the way.
This weekend I will run the damned thing in... lol (famous last words), then the re-tuning can begin.

1st Race Easter Monday looms, and I want to have run it on track on a test day before hand to shake it down and learn how to drive it again... lol

I think someone popped some of this viagra stuff in with the VPower... :p

Well bit of an update had a few issues but nothing major :(

First off was driving home from a family affair last week with the misses in the car noticed that the car seemed to pulling quite hard even though i was only on part throttle but didn't really think much of it as wasn't thrashing the car as usual but was a rather spirited drive as she was in it and was late at night (still taking it to 4500-5000) but started to realise the liquid gauge was flashing quite a lot for that stile of driving (egt warning 950 degrees) when i noticed it was boosting to 1.8 bar so tried one flat out pull and went to 2 bar so i layed off of the throttle for the rest of the drive
I had noticed for the last couple of weeks the car has been boosting slightly higher (1.55-1.6 bar) but not like this??
Checked the car over the following morning and where i had used and modified the hard pipe for the evap as the wastegate feed it had fractured on one of the oem joins as i suspect the engine movement and the pipe possibly to short had gradually broken the join so was running with the wastegate dissconnected for that journey
Any how am lucky didn't do any damage and have run a temporary silicon pipe for now as will hopefully be putting the boost contoller in next week

Secondly car lost some power and the blatent sound of a boost leak, liquid helped confirm this as gs readings were slighly higher than usual and boost a touch lower, so popped in to work to use the air supply and connected my tester up to find that i had a leak on the pipe up from the turbo to charge pipe
I wipped the pipe off to find that the jubilee clip had cut through the pipe where i had over tightend it (penis) i had had it leak a few times previously on this joint (usually after haywards or someone else worked on it) so had started tighening it with a 1/4 ratchet
Any how have now taken the support off of the charge pipe to the back of the head for now so the charge pipe can sit slightly lower to allow for the bit i trimmed off, not an ideal permanent solution but am going to run like this until changes take place as got things in the pipeline ;)

Whilst measuring up for the new tubby i checked the downpipe over as had an anoying rattle, the rattle turned out to be the heatshield on the back of the head which was easily sorted, but found the first O2 sensor loose which i tightend with a crows foot spanner as a complete arse to get to and also found that there was 2 nuts missing on the turbo to downpipe flange although its not blowing so when next off im going to put the proper audi lock nuts on as i previously found these never come undone and when removing usually wind the studs out.
But seriously suspect that haywards had forgot to put them on before the rest of the downpipe and just couldn't be arsed after woulds as really inacessable!
Also the downpipe seems all solid now upon inspection with no obvious blows but they have blatently bodged the job as rather than remake it they have just slightly modified it and modified more of the car to go around it by the looks of things including the driveshaft heatshield by what looks like cutting and re tigging it to sit tighter to the shaft and then tilted it by putting washers behind some of the mountings..... not happy!

On a plus side i have got the inlet mani under way and custom silicon joining elbow on order ready for fittment in a week or so
The inlet mani i am getting machined at a local machine shop in the end as i want to recess the runners into the mounting plate for added strength and ive not got access to a mill other wise would love to have done it all myself and saved a fair amount of money, i was going to do it all by hand but have decided its not worth it

Some bits arrived from ie last week (630cc injectors and arp headbolts) and got my egt bung to weld to the downpipe (cheers Bill) and turbo has been ordered today just a waiting game now and some silicon and alloy bits to order :yahoo:

Does anyone know if it will be ok to change the headbolts over without removing the head ie one bolt at a time?

Bill and anyone else in the know what MAF shall i get? Bill said about a S4 one but theres a couple of choices?

S4 is the next logical size up mate... its the one I am planning on using... RS4 is the next size up but its huge!! fitting an RS4 one to the TT thats in at the moment so will see how that goes but I think the S4 will be the one to use at our power levels (the TT is getting a 3076r)

Yeah was looking at the s4's but theres the 2.7t and the 4.2 na iirc?

Turbo have gone for the GTX3071r they reckon they have the same output as the 3076r but wether will be able to get anywhere near that on my setup is questionable?

There is one in greece on a leon tuned by 0-400 running 650bhp but that is running stupid boost 2.4bar iirc ;)

I would wait and see the outcome of the TT Bill is doing then...

S4 one should be fine for low to mid 400's which is where I am heading but a GTX3071 should be nearer 500hp...

One thing you need to be aware of is that the GTX3071r typically comes with an anti surge comp housing and is therefore big... IIRC you would be looking to have the same housing as me? a modded GT2871 to allow for the limited space? the anti surge housing may not fit in the space available..

...they must have found one under the sofa then :)

If they have to 'make' it then thats where they seem to fail on delivery times.... SFS makes their own hoses so I guess its luck of the draw where their workload is...

I hope they had to make it as charged me accordingly, but i know i couldn't find one anywhere that size to order 60-85mm?
Wanted the elbow rather than alloy onto straight reducer as smoother transition and room is a lot less with the excessive plenum as don't think my current set up for the charge pipe would have fit the alloy part would be in the tb ;)

Have gone for a modded gt 2871 which is roughly the same size as mine at the mo, upon measuring the clearences the anti surge housing would probably fit but would have been tight...very tight
The gt28 cover is 16cm diameter and the gtx is 19cm accross the cover mounts and mine was 16.5cms

Mine is very close to the 4wd prop doughnut but the way the turbo is clocked it has a comp cover mounting bolt right by the the doughnut and with the anti surge one would have to clock it with the cover mount away from it and might have to possibly remove a tiny bit off of the housing with a grinder which i didn't fancy

I was assured by atp that they have sold a few of these with these covers and not had problems with surge but only time will tell??
Also would have had to change or make a new tip where as at the mo all i will be loosing is my billet adaptor and 45 alloy elbow thats welded to it, so thought it would be worth a stab ;)

Its not quite as close as it looks in the photo either as its further away from the center of the doughnut than it appears ;)

surprised haywards bodged it given the 1st work was so poor quality... thought they would have tried to redeem themselves, not bodge it more.. bad news dude

I suspect the enhanced flow cahracteristics of the GTX comp wheels is the main reason why anti surge housings are being used... the GT3071 never seemed to come with them (unless requested) but the GT3076r does as std... seeing as the GTX3071 is supposed to be closer flow wise to the 3076 then I guess there could be an potential issue with surge on smaller capacity engines...

Mapping will be the key though...

I know is a joke but the down pipe as a whole seems more solid this time but they've tried to compromise with things around it by the looks of things? Not happy over all but will do the turbo change and give it a better look over, run it for a little while, get it smoke tested if i can find anywhere in the essex area providing all is well and not seen anything else in particular will then hopefully a nice and straight forward mapping session in glouchester ;)

Mapping should be in very good hands if not may end up trying to get the gt28 machined for anti surge or be trying to fit the full sized one ;)

Yes... open it up and there are two 'clips' that latch the cubby into the console... you need to gently lever them down while pulling on the cubby hole... they are in the top iirc...

Cheers Paul will have a look at it later as my attention has been rapidly diverted :yahoo:

Have to say i felt like a five year old on christmas day opening the box grinning like a cheshire cat

Overall im extremely impressed by atp's service as i only ordered it friday morning and monday morning its here and somehow ive not had to pay any duties what so ever so heres a breakdown of costs
    Turbo £876
    K26 housing £251
    delivery £85
    Total £1212

Whereas english companys wanted 1100-1200 plus vat for turbo and £250 plus vat for the housing glad i ordered from the states in the end as more of the english companys didn't seem to interested when asking them qustions and measurements et and had to keep pestering them to eventually give up
