Squeeky brakes

Is there a cure?

Only happens at around 40mph and/or right hand turns (even very slight). How can i get rid of it? Its not a proble, just an annoyance.

I have a simlar prob the brakes squeel at low speeds whilst braking strange thing is that its on;y when the weather warms up a bit it was a pain last summer but it waasnt to bad when the brakes had warme3d up a bit.
 
Rich, if its your new brakes, they are probbably still bedding in. Give them a few hundred miles and they may shut up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I think its an audi thing, mine do it too.

It first started after I power washed the calipers and this must have washed the grease away. MY reasoning anyway.

Dave you should not power wash the brakes on your car you could cause yourself a bigger problem than just squeaky brakes (i.e. no brakes at all).
 
Im having the sames issues w/ my 00 s4. The thing squeeks so loud coming to a stop sometimes. I just purchased the car 3 weeks ago so i was worried about doing the brakes. The car has 38k on it but when im looking the pads look very thick, and the rotors are smooth. The pedal feels good, and it doest squeek often at all... I do notice a massive amount of brake dust on the rims every other day the rims are covered.

Sorry guys i was just telling myself in so many words i do not have to do the brakes... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif can anyone tell me if its a PITA to replace the rotors/pads... its a job id like to do myself when the time comes.
 
power washing the brakes will do nothing at all, apart from remove brake dust. Once you have done a few revolutions its fine.

Btw, stop with the smart comments. I was just sayind Dave that it's a common thing considering My mums TTs did the same aswell as other people on here so don't make smart comments.
 
Sounds like you need to "bed" them in by going fast, then apply brakes hard, several times (like racing pads). Or, perhaps you are using the wrong pads. I had a similar problem with my A6 recently. Finally, I installed different pads. Problem solved.
On my 930 race car, I've got a squeek that won't go away no matter what pads I use. Compound vs rotor combination, I guess.

No smart comments Pete...

The owners manual of the car will specifically advise you NOT to powerwash the brakes so as to avoid the ingress of water into the seals. Plus, what was stated above IS accurate, after power washing the braking performance CAN be severely (and detrimentally) affected, albeit transiently...

Dave,

By powerwashing the brakes, you risk forcing water in bearings and the like, therefore F****** them completely. For the sake a few minutes extra, take the wheel off and use brake cleaner...

Well, did some pretty hard stops from 100+ yesterday and short sharp bursts of braking (hi speed into corners and hitting brakes just before turning in). The odd thing is that its only happens when going straiht or right (even VERY slightly right), and onl appears to be the right hand disc.

Rich, just some thoughts on this.

Do you still have the backing plates on your car? if so then it could be that the plate is out of alignment slightly and the disc is slightly rubbing on it. When I put my old brakes back on the S3 after the Porsche conversion, this happened to me but only when i cornered hard. I fixed this by bending the plate back a little.

Another thought is the dreaded 'Wheel Bearing'!

Simon, Do you mean the splash guards? If so i ha o remove these to put the discs on. And it COULD be something else not the brakes, as this also happened with my old brakes on. Around 40-50mph, So wheel bearing is posible!?!

If it is, its not a problem as it will cost me £30 for the bearing, and about £40 for fitting...not exactly a job that a 'specialist' needs to do. Would do it myself if i had the right tools.

The good old fashioned test for a duff wheel bearing was to jack the car up and rock the wheel etc to see if there was any play - does this still apply to Audis I wonder??

The reason i mentioned the wheel bearing was that me and a few mates once hired a heap of a Sierra Saphire to travel around Scotland in for a week, and after a couple of days abuse travelling up the west coast, the front wheel bearing went, but was only 'Noticeable' going around bends when the thing made a squeeking noise, eventually giving up completely.

could be time to get your pullers out!!

The thing with wheel bearings is that they make noise long before there i any noticeable play in the lateral movement.
I'll just leave it, and if it is a wheel bearing it will only get worse. Not bothered about having it replaced, not exactly th most expensive job. Funny thin it, its alot worse when its warmn..

Oh yes. Wheel bearings... that was another problem with my 930, as well. A different "squeek"... more like a "squeal". Perhaps we're getting somewhere closer to solving this problem!

Suggest: take the pads out, apply Copperslip to the metal face, re-fit pads and problem will have greatly reduced/gone (even when turning right)
