Here be my 'bahn stormer- a 2001 Avant 2.5tdi Sport Quattro. Bit of a mouthfull and that's the shortened version! I call it Axe Slayer which you'll understand when you see the plate.

Got it about a month ago. I've been looking for ages and was going to get one last year but for some reason I fancied another Freelander (cured of that affliction now for good!!) and then after that blew it's diff I got a nice reliable X-Trail (which is currently up for sale at £3750 for an 06 Columbia DCi) but then after 5 months decided I wanted that Audi again... Found this one on ebay and would have gone to view if it was closer, but it was in Manchester and I'm in the Deep South in cowshit-land (I can't read, and I can't write, but it don't really matter- 'cos I was born down in Darzet, and I can drive a trattor!). Amazingly it was relisted a couple of weeks later and £500 cheaper... so I struck a deal after a few questions and bought it blind. 5 hours on first class Virgin trains (VERY highly recommended) for £48 and I saw it for the first time. It really did look better than in the pics- you'd really never know it had done 180k miles.. Drove home at 70mph all the way and got 45mpg! My biggest concern was the mpg as I do about 40k a year, but mainly motorways/dual carriageways outside of rush hour. But I wanted the V6 and Quattro. Didn't seem much point in anything less. I'd read the mpg woes but htought I'd take a chance and it paid off. On my 100 mile each way commute it returns a steady 40mpg with cruising about 75-80mph and a bit of town work so I can live with that. Very rarely drive less than 10 miles as I'd rather walk and it's generally quicker to walk into town when all the ****** grockles are about anyway.

Anyhow, my second concern would be the chocolate camshafts. Unfortunately it had had long life servicing, but the two lobes I can see are perfect. It is a bit noisier than one I drove before despite a nice fresh oil change with VW507 spec oil. I'll be doing 8500k changes but VW507 oil from now on. I plan on getting Adamss24 to have a look anyway and if it needs it, I'll get new cams, belts, pump, tensioners, thermostat etc fitted in one hit. For the price I paid for it (£2300) I can live with that. I'd always rather buy a car with problems for less and fix them. That way, I know the jobs are done, and will end up paying the same price as one that 'is mint mate' that will still probably need them doing anyway...

In the future I plan to fiddle with injectors and maybe a hybrid turbo for about 250bhp, but I need reliability and reasonable mpg too, which I think is achievable with these mods, preferably using the bigger Bosch nozzles. I've spent far too long reading old threads... but camshafts first. And the oil leak. It has oil al over the outside of the left bank of cylinders which appear to come from the head gasket region, but I'm not sure if it's leaking still as I cleaned the undertray when I did the oil change and the only oil leaking now was from the drain bolt and new copper washer, which needs changing! Anyone think of anything that can leak here? The rocker 'seems' fine as the pipes below the rocker are clean. I'm suspecting the sump might be leaking. Someone's been in there as the sealant around it is not exactly factory finish.

I also need to fit a double din sat nav unit, probably an Xtrons unit running Android. The inner lower parts of the centre console below the CC unit have been cut away so I'm guessing someone once had a Double D in there and returned it to stock? That's gonna be fun...

So, what's it got mister? Full DIS, cruise, S4 18" alloys, factory HIDs (with non-working washers!), S4 rear spoiler (I think? It's bigger than standard), EGR already blanked, new front brakes, new ish control arms up front and a decent black sports interior.

Things need fixing:

All shocks/springs shagged. Got Bilstein B4 shocks and standard sport springs with top mounts etc etc coming to fix that. Currently drives like a three legged pig bordering on ****** lethal. Should get at least the rear shocks done Friday as they're totally gone. Front ok-ish. All original fit on there! Back ends jumps and drags like a dog with worms. and bounces about like Salma Hayek in a Caddillac.

Tyres changing after alignment after new shocks. Got a set of 235/40/18 Vrederwotnot Vorti thingies after reading lots of good vibes about them. £84 each. :)

Sort oil leaks.

Fit front engine mount.

Fit thermostat one way or another.

Find out why aircon doesn't work. I gassed it but still didn't work so guessing clutch gone? Will have to take it to a specialist first for a leak test once the summer prices have dropped.

Fit new side light bulb holders as mine are cracked from the wrong bulbs having been fitted and wires broken on the feed.

Fit new foam to the engine cover as mine is crumbling and falling off.

New HID reflectors and raise the damned beam so I can see at night when on a midnight run from the stix to the brix!

That's about it I think. Things I'd like to do:

More power as above.

Double Din Android with bluetooth, DAB etc as above. Speaker upgrades to go with it.

One of those nice dimpled leather gearknobs and steering wheels.

Cupra splitter and colour coding.

Stone chips sorting. They've been touched in but need rubbing flush then polishing.

Roof bars for kayaks. Or high feet for the aero Thule bars I already have.

Straight through pipe.

Aluminium internal trim set.

Red leather.

Rear tints to hide the ginger daywalker sprog and all his cr@p.

Maybe the RS4 rear ARB but I'd like to try one out first.

New rear wash motor so that it works the right way around. Check the pics..

Fit another cup holder- one is not enough!

Refurb the wheels properly..

Fit my new coolant expansion tank I have in my pile of bits and change the coolant.

Change diff oils etc.

Already ran two tanks of Diesel Rhino through it aas I've always had good results with that on VWs. Not much on Freelander and X-trail but VWs love it. Got ***** around by ECP with the wipers so bought a full aero set from an Audi dealer. And very nice it is too. Interior LEDS as usual and sidelights, except the side light holders are gash- see above.

And now the pics:

Looks to be pretty clean for it's mileage, welcome to the site.

May I ask did you used to be a member on Ukmkivs, I'm sure I recognise your username?

Yup, had a black Mk4 130 GTD and blew it up with a 180 remap. Yeehaw!!!

Anyone notice the rear wiper? It is mounted 180 deg out but runs the wrong way too! Dunno what's up, but it's back to front. If I put the arm the right way it wipes the Audi badge not the glass. Weird.. someone's obviously done it for a reason as they've tried to make cutouts on the arm for the squirter in the wrong places too...

Another tidy avant!
Are those wing mirrors chrome cover caps.....?
If so how good is the fit?

Great write up mate:applaus:

Yes they are, and they are a good fit. Not too tacky either surprisingly, but my inner redneck loves shiny stuff anyway.. Everything on it except the aero wipers were on it when I bought it so no idea where it all comes from.

Blew your 130pd turbo you say, been there mate.
I snapped mine clean in half when it blew at full chat :faint:

I used it as an excuse to put larger go fast parts on there

Jeeees-us!!! :scared2:
That's a bit ******...

I just blew the head gasket, and the clutch, and the DMF, and the exhaust, and there was something else serious I can't remember. Shame, as I put ALL new supension, and tyres while I had it. But by god, it certainly flew while it lasted...:rockwoot:

Today I fitted new rear shocks and mounts. Couldn't see how we could easily get the springs in so left the old ones for now and will try again when I do the fronts in a week or so. Now it drives like a dream in stead of dragging it's back end like a dog with worms. The left rear shock had nothing in it. The outside was as greasy as a Rocker's comb but inside was as empty as the Exxon Valdeze. The strut had no compression resistance at all! The right was better but wouldn't extend the full length on it's own. That would explain the poor handling! Much better now..

The turbo wasn't salvageable that's for sure.

I worked the opposite way round and did the front end of the Avant first as the massive arch gap was killing me, and I noticed a few worn bushes when replacing some control arms for the mot. The front end is all new everything, and I plan on doing the same at the rear now, I just need to do some parts collecting.

The arms and stuff were done on mine already, but amazingly nobody has ever changed the shocks. At 180k miles... :keule:

I really wonder how they pass MOTS with shocks as shagged as the rear. I've never seen one as bad and I've swapped loads in the years.

Yes and no!!
If i was to do it i would put a single din centre console in so it looks genuine, hese make them look a bit tacky in my eyes, i have a single din cage if you want it, pm me

Sorry bud, don't quite understand.. I already have a single din stereo so i thought I'd only need a single din facia...?

Sorry bud, thought you were converting from double to single, so yeh that should be all you need, for the hassel and cost i would defo upgrade to a double though bro, really not ken on after market HU's in Audi's, but everyone to the own !!

Just out of interest were the turbo's that blew on aftermarket exhausts? (turbo back/cat back?)

Ah, that makes sense! Yes I will upgrade to DD but I already have an all singing all dancing single din that I shall use for now until I get a Double D with satnav as well. I have to get one for the T5 van as well but that's simple!

I am correct in thinking I need to find a switchable live as well as the loom doesn't do that due to CANBUS?

Mine was mapped with a decat, but I would say mine was down to being the original unit on circa 180k. It lasted longer than I thought tbh though as it was mapped at 165k.

Ah right cool was just a bit sceptical as allot of people slate the VAG group for having "chocolate turbo's" so I was concerned about spikes without a cat although as you say at that mileage it's bound to be on it's last legs. Big Garrett turbo's are supposedly much stronger but then obviously you pay a premium, need a few things to make the turbo fit and other upgrades to make the most out of them.

You think VWs are bad, try Nissan's choice of turbos...

Tonight I have been mostly swearing under my car.

Time to do the front suspension struts. Easy enough, read through the 'walk throughs' enough time to imprint in my head then off I go. Driver's side was quite easy once I had the right tools and there was no clip holding the strut up. The other side was not. All because some muppet had used a longer bolt to hold the bottom of the strut. It would not come out due to the rear arm being right in the way. In the end the only way to get it out was to drop the front arm off the hub which was easy enough, then it came out at last with a lot of banging and swearing. Then the top had a clip but a few stomps on the hub from a standard issue Fat B'stard did the job. Thankfully, I have one next door. Putting it back together was not fun as the front arm just would not get into it's hole in the hub. After removing the shock again and a lot of jiggling and swearing we got it in. By now it was dark and it was not easy finding nuts, bolts and tools. Just finished it all and threw tools in the back of the car til tomorrow. I've had enough.. Hope to get a 4 wheel alignment and my new tyres fitted tomorrow and hopefully it will all have been worth it! Did scratch my immaculate front wings with a crow bar though, which pees me off a bit. but I'll get a magic touch up pen tomorrow and do it. I think it's only top coat thankfully.

It's a massive pita compared to mk4 suspension isn't it mate, I would say I took me between 4-5 hours to overhaul the front end on mine.

I'll agree, but I'm never doing the rear sub bushes on a MK4 ever again.

Haven't done the rear springs yet, but that can wait a while.

Yeah I've only done the front end so far too. I'm now parts collecting for the rear end including an RS4 ARB.

I'd like to try one of those ion a car before I decide. Rear shocks easy peasy so worth doing even if you can't get the time to do the spring yet.

So, yesterday I take it for a drive and all feels good. Standard Sport suspension is ok but not as stiff as I thought it would be, but it's good enough. Was driving along last night and noticed a thumping over low speed bumps so thought I'd knackered something. great.. then after a while there was a flat tyre type noise. Stopped, and all was good. Odd.. Drove on and it gets worse. Pulled into a petrol station to fill up and checked.. to find the wheel nuts loose. Son of a puta..... Tightened up and only slight thump on low speed bumps, so still something wrong. Today I took the wheel off and had a look. Glad I did as the ARB bolt was loose. Just goes to show you should check and double check especially when tired, dark and having lots of back pain... All sorted now so I shall go out again for a drive to walk the sprog down the quay and see how it goes.

Btw, anyone near Bournemouth with an S4 rear ARB fitted that I can check out before I buy one?

In all honesty it didn't do much for me although I already had a decent set of springs and dampers.

Damn, forgot about this- I was in Brum all day yesterday to offload a very very full VW van load worth of fur hats off... should have taken you up on the quick spin offer.. ;)

I'm still looking for a localish person (to Bournemouth) with an RS4 rear ARB fitted to have a ride in and also anyone without rear exhaust boxes on a V6tdi to listen to.
Even better if anyone has a 300bhp jobby to try out...

Took the car to see Chris Adams today and he thinks it's all fairly ok, so shall book it in with him for belts, stat, pump etc etc in a couple of weeks, then if the poke-around proves it to be ok, I'll have a word about commissioning a 300bhp kit....

Just a warning though- let him take it out for a data log on his own. You don't want to be sat in your own car when he does it... :jump:

He did comment on how grippy the tyres are and I'd agree (minus the slight understeer on roundabouts taken with a bit of vigour) and at £84 a corner, they are a bargain- 235 40 18 (IIRC) Vredestein Ultrac Vorti though I notice prices have gone up. Think mine came from Tyreleader in the end.

Ha, ha ! I just happen to drive these cars the way they should be driven... You will be pleasantly surprised how a b6 drives with about 250 Bhp... the understeer and power slides add to the thrill ! Let me know when you're ready for me to work on your car and i will have my b5 ready to take you out for a ride...

:icon thumright: And quite right too!! Check your PMs- I just sent a message about booking you to do the belts in a couple of weeks time. Will look forward to a ride in the B5...

So... last January I had Adamss24 (Chris) change the camshafts and all the belts, water pump etc etc for the top job German cams. I changed the HID bulbs to 5k and that solved the light issues! I also had a myopic driver park his mirror in the rear door edge on the driver's side which caused a bit of damage, but not too major. And all was going well for many months. Then last August I put a set of brand new tyres on which I drove to work 200 miles and they were great. Then the next day the injector pump just stopped working. Damn.

Now the plan was to get the old pump reconned for £650 but it just never happened and the poor car has been sat there since. Now I am moving in a couple of months time so it has to go. The wheels and tyres are worth £3-400, the HIDs gotta be worth something as are all the doors, mint wings, bonnet etc and if someone has knackered cams, this engine has what you want with only a few thou on them. You could just put a second hand pump on or recon the existing, or use the parts but it's got to go, so offering it here first before puttingj it on ebay in a week. I'll be back on the computer next week and will check any messages in a first come first serve order. If nothing, it'll go on the bay...
