Iv seen this car being advertised on autotrader for nearly 2 weeks now. What i dont understand is, it seems very cheap to me and i was looking at grabbing it, but seeing that it still hasnt gone yet has got me thinking.

Anyone know anything about it? advert seems good, high milage but...

The high milage probably puts people off, and at the end of the day petrol prices are putting people of performance cars. It could also be the case that although the engine has been maintained well, the suspension could be in need of an overhall, it could need new tyres soon or new brake discs and pads or it may not be HPI clear.

Only way to tell as dre said is to view it. Big spec for the money although the multi function steering wheel just looks odd in an S3.

Interior looks pretty good condition for 180k+ miles to be fair.

If someone got that for nearer than the £2k mark, then I expect there could be some money to be made by breaking it- as the overall condition of the car looks alright from the pics.

I always believe a remap will only speed up any issues the car has anyway, any decent tuner will check its health before flashing.

It maybe worth taking someone with a VCDS to plug into the car to see if there are any fault codes in the ECU.

Plus look very closely at the service history to see how regular oil changes are and when any major parts have been replaced. e.g New clutch would cost around £800 for a new one inc fitting.

would it be needing a new clutch at that age, if it hasn't been done already?
Also the cambelts are every 40k miles right? so would also need a new one of those aswell?

2 previous owners. Current owner has had it since Feb 2007, which matches the adverts.

I would say your onto a good one, just high mileage puts many buyers off. Let's not forget though, this is German engineering ;)

Clutch on my S3 when I had went at 100k, well the slave cylinder failed at 100k which is a gear box off job so clutch which was pretty worn was replaced at the same time along with the duel mass flywheel. I believe the cambelt is every 60k or 5 years which ever comes first. If it has been serviced regualry and properly it should be fine, Prawns 1.8T had over 200k before he rebulit it and that was only done because of the build he was going for and that car is driven hard but looked after.

could'nt agree more, just too add input onto the mileage thing on German. I bought a seat LCr 2 years back from a dealer with 54k on the clock allegedly. Turned out the car had 110k on the clock, the dealer gave me my money back no problem. Granted I should have checked first but with it being a dealer u would have thought they would have done that. Anyway getting back too the point of this haha, the car drove spot on as if the mileage on the clock was genuine. Vags can take the miles if they are looked after. :) just my input.

I have just over 180,000 on my S3.

Granted that the majority of the parts have been replaced through my 4 years of ownership but it goes to show that with proper maintenance and regular services they can be higher milers. I'm still in the process of modding so I'm certain I'll be taking my S3 to over 200,000 and I'm not worried about it.

It's only a number at the end of the day and like I said above- the car looks in pretty good nick for the mileage covered. If you was to show me just the pictures and asked me to guess the mileage on the car I wouldn't have said 180k! I have seen other S3's with a lot less mileage, in worse condition and priced more than this one!

I'm 99% certain that was up for sale in 2009 when I was looking for mine. Remember the colour combo and also asking about the MF steering wheel on here (and never getting an answer actually - can you retro fit?). Also think it had a fogged up headlight when I enquired...

Car sounds ok and mileage isn't the death knell it was 30 years ago, German cars with good history go on and on and on and on, always buy on condition and history rather than mileage in my book.

I would say, if you have any sort of money problem do not by an s3. These things cost a lot to maintain especially given their age. It's inevitable that you will have to get stuff sorted out, the car is 12 years old with over 150k on the clock.

I bought my car 14 months ago and have spent a couple if grand getting bits done (all the bushes replaced, haldex issues, etc.) I haven't really done any performance mods (apart from the s2000 air filter!), so if money is tight, don't get one!

EDIT - just did some sums, I've spent over 3 grand in 14 months! Lovely!

I'd agree 100% with Erf on this one. Bought mine end of Jan, already spent over 2k getting it to the standard I want.
Have no idea what it's like to live with as a daily driver yet, as the works been constantly ongoing, I've barely driven it!
Cash strapped individuals need not apply!
The mods haven't even come in to the equation yet, but no doubt another 2-3k on the horizon
