Not un-common. I saw a 15 plate Corsa today and did a double take when I saw it.

Dealers drive customer cars on pre-delivery runs where I work (Swindon) without trade / dealer plates and the new number plate on all the time way before the change.
 
That reg doesn't show up on a DVLA vehicle enquiry. Without trade plates they are committing an offence, so yes, they are being naughty!

What people forget when they do this is that it invalidates any vehicle insurance they may have

i had my 63' plate ducati a day early... is not that big a deal IMO
 
until the police stops you and impounds your car, then slaps you with 6 points (IN10) lol

Such an odd system. In Canada your plates expire on your birthday so there are no long queues for new vehicle registrations or renewals, it's all spread throughout the year.
 
Neither then is a snob value to the registration that plays into dealerships hands...
