Some radio issues - No DIS display - VCDS fault codes included

Hi,

I recently bought a 2004 1.8T A4 Cab. there are some issues with the radio (concert II single CD)..

1. It doesn't turn on and off with the ignition
2. The CD doesn't work - CD error when loaded
3. The radio info doesn't display on the DIS screen.
4. Radio illumination doesn't work.

I have scanned with vag-com and got the following errors under:

Instruments
01304 - Radio - 49-00 No communications

Radio
01317 - control module instrument cluster (J285) - 49-00 No communications
00856 - radio antenna - 29-00 short to ground
00858 - connection; radio intermediate frequency (IF) output antenna - 29-00 short to ground
01305- Databus for infotainment - 49-00 No communications

I have cleared the codes but they just come back.. as there are so many issues with the radio, does it sound like the head unit is dud? or is it a coding issue?

Anything to test or try?

Have you removed and checked connections? What type of cd are you using some players can be funny with ripped cdrs

yeah, pulled the radio and all wiring looks fine.. also used original CD's as I thought that might be the case..

As it's a A4 cab I think the aerial has broken in the boot rubber, so might get a look at it this weekend to fix it as no radio is doing my head in..

Possible Solutions

• Check CAN-Databus Wiring/Connectors from/to Instrument Cluster (J285)

Check wire going to the clocks, could be broken. That is for the dis.

As you mention cab and aerial always temperamental, check that for the 00856 code.

Check wires for can for the 01395 error. The can is saying that there is no communication to the head unit. Maybe cos it doesn't work properly. I'm thinking broken wires somewhere, not necessarily the head units wiring harness.
(Could be it was removed and then fitted back before sale, and the removal broke things)

Wiring to the back in the can-bus block looked ok to me.. now that I have fixed the aerial I will scan again with vag-com.. will visit a local breakers on Sat to get another radio as the CD doesn't work anyway..

Found this in instrument cluster. Maybe chdck yours and see what it says.

Channel 062: CAN-Databus Infotainment (Installation List)

• +00001 = Radio (Optional)
• +00002 = Telephone (Optional)
• +00004 = Navigation (Optional)
• +00008 = Telematics (Optional)
• +00016 = Intrument Cluster (Standard - only coded with 2nd Component)
