Hi,

This is the first spell of hot weather with my S3 and as a resullt have unfortuntely discovered that my air con gives of a smell that my girl friend thinks is like smelly feet.

I have heard of air con systems becoming smelly because of bacteria etc. but this is my first car with air con so not sure what to do about fixing it.

Has anyone else had this same problem? How did you fix it? Is it costly? :(

Cheers,

ICE

I could (and am probably am!) wrong about this, but I heard that its caused by perfume that gets sucked in, goes 'off' then re-circulates.
Even if its not true, at least you can blame your g/f lol

Get a Comma air-con anti-bacterial cleaner from Halfords, and follow the instructions. Also, get a new pollen filter.

Thanks for the quick responsess lads.

Will look into the Comma kit. When my car was last serviced (in Feb) the polen filter was replaced, so hopefully that should all be ok.

Apart from perfume, could it be anything else, i.e more serious?

Cheers.

Audi Bexley recently did me an aircon service for £50 including a regas and antibacterial treatment. It smelt like a hospital for about 2 weeks but aircon is now ice cold on a hot day

That's handy to know. I live two minutes from them.

£5 i saw the treatment for from tesco. Its a can of anti bacterial stuff made by car plan if i remember correctly. Press the button to realease the aerosol stuff with the air con turned on in recirculating mode with the doors shut (and you outside of the car) leave for ten minutes. Job done.

A mate who works for a VW dealership said they have an offer on their Air Con service (including anti bacterial) for £100 all in - sounds steep to me.

Will ring round Audi dealers in my area.

Cheers for the info.

Where is your area, ICE? You might find an independent air-con specialist a better bet, as they're likely to know more about it than the technicians in an Audi dealership. They'll also probably charge less. That's why I was pleasantly surprised by what S3Quattrodrift said about Bexley Audi.

I think maybe they did it cheap for me because i was getting them to do some bits on warranty but the aircon was not covered as there wasn't a record of it being serviced recently. They also replaced my heated mirrors but then found out that they were not covered but they had already changed them so did those for free.

I have got to do a service in 1000 miles (61,000). Anybody got any idea of how much or if there is a good independant near Bexley/Dartford

I'm based near Ipswich. You've just reminded me of an air con specialist who ia located near me, so I will add them to my list of people to call.

Cheers,

ICE

Might be too far but htere is a good independent at Marks Tey on A12 - John Austin. Good service and much more reasonable prices than the stealers!!

Easy one, no contest. Go to Sanspeed, in Standard Road Bexleyheath.
