I am looking at getting a smart tv as our viera plasma looks a bit dull in comparison to the new range of smart tvs,I am after one which. can be 3D enabled,42 inch plus and not costing the earth.

Pay attention to the picture refresh rate as a 100Hz will have pants jittery motion flow.

    800-1000 Hz is super.

    yet another vote for SONY!
our last set was a sony and never had a problem with it in over 8 years!
we decided we needed a bigger, and in particular a smart tv so obviously wanted another sony!
i looked online and found a 50inch sony for a good price but needed to see one in the flesh so popped into pc world to have a look!
when looking at it, the bloke came over and i told him i was just looking as i had seen it on the net.
he explained it was not a bad tv but insisted on showing me another that they had on special with free 3d blu ray!
he showed me a 47inch w series sony that was technically twice the spec of the tv i was looking at!
twice the hz, (400), twice the HDMI sockets (4), 3d and a slimmer bezel!
i walked out the shop thinking hard, done a full U turn, went back in and bought it lol!
sony are the best for me through experience, even though there was so much choice, i think the sony ones look more classy!
be warned though when buying from a store as they try and flog you way overpriced HDMI leads at £70 each plus insurance!
which as it is a sony and i have home insurance would not require, and know for a fact i could buy the leads elsewhere at a fraction of the price told him no thanks!
to summarise, it is a fantastic piece of kit!

    what a ridiculous comment!
firstly, to the normal sighted everyday person, in all honestly there is not much difference in picture quality between all the big makes!
l.g and samsung are decent, sony and panasonic are decent. in fact a couple of colleagues from work on a recent japan trip actually told me panasonic and sharp are the best in picture quality!
they are the most sought after in japan of all places! where they actually engineer these things!
it just happens that we are so behind the times in receiving the latest tech that fails us!
the latest thing to hit the streets are 4k tv's.
panasonic are the boys in this department as it happens i am led to believe! but, my pockets are not deep enough to afford one!
also the sony 4k tv's use an lg panel in them and the pictuure quality is immense, so the comment of sony tv's are shocking is total rubbish!

by the way i love my sony and to my blind eyes it looks better to the panasonics in the shop!
led smart, full wifi, guerilla glass, etc etc and looks nice off!:yum:

Stay away from LG products would be my advice. They release the next generation so fast they don't bother supporting their current line up if they develop a fault! They wash their hands of a product IMHO.

3x Samsung in this house (2x LCD & 1 LED) & not one has had a fault in 4 years! we also have a 32" Panny LED which doesn't compare to the Samsung's Audio or Visuals, and Audio output is almost as important as visuals.

Although the LED Samsung is hooked up to my Surround Amp & 6 speakers, it's rare for me to actually feel the need to put the sound on because the quality is so ....Normal... from the TV itself. That might sound a strange thing to say, but a lot of the slimmer TV's these days sound tinny without a separate amplifier driving speakers\sound bar! With a decent Samsung you don't need any external amps to listen to the news, etc.

I can't personally speak for Sony's as I've never owned one, but Audio is something you should consider when making your decision.

One other thing that might be of interest ...John Lewis give you a free 5 year guarantee with all their TV's & apparently they're "never knowingly undersold".

I'm not a member of the Partnership nor am I affiliated with anybody that is, just thought it's be worth a mention.

Two good friends of mine work for currys PC world on TV sales, they tell me Panasonic is the brand to buy, they have the best panels and specs, all the latest gear and lead the way in TV tech. But you need to dig deep to afford the best ones, their 4k stuff is mind blowing.

Samsung is the next best thing (they helped me pick my Samaung Smart 3D when the smart and 3D was a new thing) Samsung are the second best on the market after Panasonic.

After that, Sony and LG are decent, samsung actually manufacture the LG panels for them, so there isn't much in it.

Then it's all much of a muchness, not really much in it.

My own opinion, Samsung is your best bang for buck as long as you go for a series 7 or better! Again, within the samsung range there are good and bad ones. The series 8 models are unbelievable and on par with Panasonic for picture, series 7 are amazing and I love mine, I've had it 2/3 years now and it's still one of the best of the market. Series 6 stuff is on level with Sony and LG.

    My 2p worth!

Before you part with your hard earned cash, have a look at the Panasonic TX-P50GT60B.I recently bought this model from Richer Sounds with a 5 year warranty included. It has won quite a few awards i gather...."What HI FI awards 2013" for best premium TV 47-52" and also AVfourums, best buy...just to name two.Google it and have a look, you won't be disappointed i promise.

I just upgraded to a Sony Bravia KDL-55W905 (their top of the range LED) and it's fantastic. Smart TV, 3D, Triluminos colour tech and super fast 8ms response so perfect for gaming. Expensive thriugh, but they do an 805 that does without he latest colour tech thing. There's a new range coming out in 'spring' so maybe worth waiting a couple of months either for newest stuff, or for prices on current range to drop.

My vote for Sony Bravia because it has the good option control for HDMI because of which I can automatically turn off the connected equipment when I turn off the TV. The TV will automatically turn on and select the respective HDMI input. The connected equipment is turned on by One-Touch-Play.

Equipment listed under External Inputs will turn on automatically when selected.
