Ok, first of all, I am in NO way saying that the B5 kit causes problems, this is just a problem I've had since I fitted mine and only just got round to writing it up.

The problem I have is only small, but really annoying and only happens every so often.

My car has a boost gauge, and it has not been mapped yet and the only mods I have are the B5 V2 TIP, jetex filter and heatshield, Forge008 DV with yellow spring.

So, with the car fully up to temperature, I'll set off on a closed road/private race track, and nail it through first and second, the car over-boosting to about 12psi and dropping down and settling at around 9psi and all is well.

Go up into third, and again it will overboost to around 11psi then very occasionally, the engine will make a hissing sound, which sounds as though it's coming from the air intake area and the boost will drop down to 5psi and stay there until I let off, and put the power back on.

The same applies for 4th, but in 5th and 6th everything is more settled.

    What's happening? Any ideas?

Also, this maybe totally unrelated, but it's done it since I put the forge DV on; when I REALLY rev the car, I mean round to 7000 RPM, and change gear, I get like a warbling sound (not the same noise as compressor stall) coming from the turbo area... Does anyone know what this noise is and is it bad?

    Sorry for the essay!!

Something else is wrong there Ben, because you're not boosting high enough for a stock S3 anyway!

I'm sure a stock S3 boosts at around 1-1.1 bar or so? so more like 15-16psi!

It's not a boost leak I don't think, as most of the time it holds boost, and I'm pretty sure 9 - 12 ish is right for a standard 210 S3... I'll do yet another standard S3 boost pressure post... :p lol

After doing a little reading up, could it possibly be the N75 valve going boobs skyward?

Could be n75 but from my experience its more intermittent. It also doesn't explain why its happend straight after fitting the B5 tip

By more intermittent, do you mean the problem would happen more or less frequently than I'm having it?

I just wanted to add you have a yellow spring in forge dv running standard boost.......... I'm no expert but always been told that yellow is for 22 psi plus. Therefore your dv not operating correctly. I only learnt this 2 weeks ago when I went to jbs Chesterfield and he told my mate off for it, lucky we were there to get his mapped lol!

Standard boost for an S3 is 1bar (15psi). So something is not right, my guess would be boost leak but you've checked that right?

as it didnt happen all the time, theres no fault code for the n75 so may be worth replacing.not meaning to sound underminding but may be worh checking the tip is secured tight to the turbo and that all inlets of the tip have clamps on them.

Your not even near me so i cant get your car scanned

I would check if you have fitted the TIP over the billet piece properly... seen this a few times before... did you use sealant on the billet when fitted to the turbo? if you hear a hiss from the intake it could be a leak...

Ok, I'll check that thanks, I used some 300 degree silicone on the billet to the turbo and turned it to smear it so I'd like to think it's sealed lol I'll check all the jubilee clips to start with :)

stock boost is 0.8bar on S3... 11.6psi, call it 12psi...
if its dropping to 9psi that seems low.. 5psi is limp mode of some description..
    fault codes? got vagcom?

summats not correct here... and not tip related unless its got a leak from fitment somewhere.

Hmm :/ Well I did think 9 was a little bit low. I haven't got vagcom no, but will have to get it plugged in somewhere.

I've checked the TIP and all seems well, all the clips are tight and the billet adaptor is secure and the tip is well secured to it. Ever since I knew what it boosted to (when I fitted the boost gauge) It's boosted to 12psi then dropped to 9 or 10. What could be making it boost less? I've tried unplugging the MAF and that makes no difference so it's not that.. I have recently given it a full service, oil filter, fuel filter, ultrasonic cleaned injectors and FPR, fuel treatments, the lot and it still boosts the same..

Might just get it mapped and have done with it lol

With your turbo boost pressure (standard map) I would have expected you to have a green spring in your DV. I have a spare one that you can have if you need it. Just send me a PM. It came with my 007P.

I have got the green spring as I got green, yellow and blue with my 008.. But it's absolute crap IMO, I put the yellow spring in when I first got the 008, and it ran fine. Somebody told me that the yellow is no good for a standard S3, so I put the green back in, and it ran soooo crap I swapped it straight back. With the green spring in, it felt like it wasn't boosting :/

I will however swap it back to see if it makes any difference to my problem or stop my "warble" when shifting at very high revs, and report back.

I'm glad you said that... I recon APY engines are more different to BAMs and AMKs than everyone thinks.. I know exactly what you mean about the green spring. Mine ran like crap too.

Is your car mapped or standard? I ask because ive just fitted my B5 TIP (went straight in with little cutting required, excellent piece of kit!!) and my 007p and I have the green spring (which I thought was for stock cars?). Do I need the yellow?

    Car is a BAM 2002 S3

Haha they do seem to have their little querks to them.

Yeah dan my cars standard but its stage 2 speced and runs 15psi and pulls nearly as good as my mates remapped s3, id ft a yellow spring, greens fine for the golf/a3 turbos but for the s3 id always say yellow even if not mapped.

What mods do you have for stage 2 spec mate? And how come it boosts so high for standard map?

B5 v2 tip, full 3" tbe decatted exhaust system, large jetex cone filter, de-resonated forge charge pipe, welly fmic, ported inlet manifold with v6 tb and enlarged dv relocation kit. The car pulls like a train mate, that and the quick shift gear chnages it about keeps with my mates remapped s3.

Well it only cost me about £20 so was a bargain, just seemed to allow the turbo to spool that bit faster and seemed to smooth the car out a bit, but i was running the oem charge pipe withot the baffle and i dont think the car liked it.

    +1

The Forge SplitR is officially the worst thing forge have ever sold for the 1.8t. It's like saying "by putting this piece of paper in between your face and a gun, it's ok to shoot it"... It's daft.

    Rant over lol

Ahhh ok, How come it's baffled anyway? Surely the sound of the boost building up in the system is an exciting entity to have on a "sports" car? Typical Germans though I suppose haha
