You Build week is here! wonder what they have done so far??
Yeah come on Warren ... can't you get a live feed from the factory on status
Been a bit of a mixed bag day really. Very excited about car going to build this week, it finally feels like I'm on the final straight.
Was at APS today getting the remainder of the mods removed from the S3 (exhaust/remap). Whilst I was there the photographer for Audi Driver Magazine turned up in his V6 4motion Golf for some Haldex repairs. We get chatting and he's meeting a guy called Damian (TTSport666 from TTOC) to do a photo shoot for a future feature on his Audi TT Mk1 Quattro Sport 240. Anyway to cut long story short the guy who was supposed to help with the photoshoot didn't turn up, so they asked me to stand in as the 'chase' car for the on road photos of the car (eg photographer hanging out of my window taking photos of the TTQS).
I did this, then as a thank you Neil Birkett (ADM photographer) offered to do the same for my car despite it looking dirty and 'orrible! So I have some nice on the road shots coming of the car in the next few days.
On the way back to berkshire the car felt pretty flat with no mods :-( one good thing was a B8 S4 decided to have a pop at me near Silverstone and tanked me, so at least I can be assured the V6T is faster out the box than a standard S3!
So we're in to the last month, can't wait. Some photos from the day...
Well that sucks! Sepang is an amazing colour. Still, Estoril is amazing too but in a slightly different way.
Missed Sepang by a hairs breadth, but not sure I could have coped with an additional wait for it. The new 20's are an OK design, but I prefer them in diamond cut / painted grey rather than a hyper silver finish, so no biggie there.
Unexpected souvenir from yesterday (lo-res version). Something nice to remember the old girl by, and that's the best those bloody anthracite RS4 wheels have EVER looked!
and the car that will be in the ADI feature (not sure which edition of ADI magazine it will be in yet)
ha ha yeah the RS4's wheels do look good in the pic.
Great pic overall
On my first test drive in an S4 I encountered a Mk1 Leon Cupra. I used to own one, it was my first turbo car, I loved it and boy did it feel fast to me. I had a Peugeot 206 prior to that so perhaps not surprising. The thing is, in the S4 the Leon saw me coming and floored it but it was just so easy to catch him it was ridiculous! I can't wait.
Nice Warren, how does it feel compared to the S3?
Got to love the stealth look, even if it is a pig to keep clean. Deffo a great shot to remember the car by
I've had a couple of drives in dealer cars and it's a really different proposition. Initial impressions are as such:
1) It feels so much more luxurious than the 8P. Having driven one for 7 years I'd got very familiar with 8P and hadn't realised quite how the world had moved on (esp. seats and tech interfaces).
2) It's a big car, but the revisions to the FL version means with the sport diff it drives like a smaller car. It's agile, way less understeery than the S3, and you can point it far more accurately than the V8 I drove in 2010.
3) It's quieter. On ****ty motorway the tyres drone less, and as I'm turning into an old b*****d the S5 does split personality of comfort vs. sports more convincingly than S3.
I'm still incredibly fond of S3 8P, for a flawed car (a pumped up 2.0TFSi) it has a lot to like, a fair chunk of charm, and it's delivered me safely through some incredible life experiences:
1) 4 laps of the ring
2) 25 laps+ of Combe
3) Strasbourg to Calais (384 miles) in just over 4 hours after we got up late
4) Road trip around France (Normandie / Britanny / Loire Valley / Paris)
5) Road trip round Germany (Ring / MB World / Porsche Museum)
6) Got me 120 mile trip on summer 19" just legal tyres in the worst winter weather we've had when others were pulling up (8 hour journey)
7) Le Mans trip 2012
8) Paris motorshow trip 2010
So all in all there are a lot of happy memories across the two cars that will live with me for many days. Best car I've owned to date by a country mile.
This video always brings a smile to my face since you first posted it Warren.
So much so, I think we all need to see it again
From the slo-mo wheels off the line and hunkering down to rediculous pace & acceleration and speedo needle of the dial.
it's just frickin awesome
Build week... I'm very jealous!
Can't wait to see this one arrive, and as you know, you've hit me with the modding bug!!
My journey has really started now, I traded my lovely e92 coupe last week and am now flitting around in a 2011 1.2 Corsa which my son will get in September. He's a lucky chap!
You really are spoiing him ;-) That said for you the new car will feel quick when it comes.
Don't leave your keys about! Intrigued to see what you think of the switchover and how it stacks up to the Beemer after a bit of time behind the wheel.
This video would sell me the car even if I hadn't seen or driven one. I haven't spoken to one person who I've sent it that hasn't thought it looks immense (apart from my old man whose a grumpy SoB and thinks I should buy something practical like a Yeti 4x4; cheers Dad!). Revo Kev said the video really doesn't do it justice as it looked faster in the flesh!
**Edit**: Just watched it again, how f*****g fast is that car to 100!
ha ha lol ... that's what impresses me, the speedo needle just goes up and up at insane speed.
oh and to answer your question mate ...
8.86 seconds to 100 mph
0 to 60 mph in 3.71 seconds is rather  too though
Just been conversing with other DMC customers, and it seems there may be an opportunity for a bit of a get together later in the summer:
Scotty76 and Keef are already customers, Shrek5 isn't far from being a local, and wondered whether anyone else may be able to make it to West Berkshire to compare notes / pistake / general banter / chuff hog.
Know life commitments and distance can make these a no-go for some, but the more the merrier and would be good to meet a few of those who've suffered the 'Audi wait'!
Had the most bizarre dream last night, I'm not much of a dreamer but it was so vivid it really unsettled my head by the time I woke up! In the dream (I'll paraphrase to keep it concise):
1) Dealer calls to say car is ready to collect (seems odd as in my head its only just built)
2) Go to collect it, wife sees an S1 in the dealers and says she thinks we should get that instead as the S5 just seems too extravagant (thankfully it wasn't pink!). Salesman seems fine with this so we test drive it and both agree its not the right car
3) I'm not saying much at this point, and then wife suggests can we try the S3 8V again just to be sure at which point I put my foot down and say no, we're changing to an S5 and that's the end (saying this through gritted teeth at this point)
4) Dealer takes us to our S5 which is out back, and it's a horrible flat blue (e.g. not Estoril or Sepang, more like a 1980's Ford Escort dark flat blue). I dispute the colour, salesman goes off to investigate, I'm obviously mortified! Wife doesn't want it.
Thankfully at this point I woke up. It was one of those dreams that was so real you almost have to double take with yourself when you wake up that it wasn't reality, particularly as I said I just don't dream that often (that I can recollect).
I'm not one of those people who reads any significance into dreams / the positioning of the stars etc...., but it does make you wonder WTF goes on inside our tiny minds. Get the feeling my brain has had enough of waiting (along with my 'conscious' self!).
Better now for seeing that pic of the pink A1 in AdamZA's thread, if nothing else it proves there is always a situation that could always be worse than the one you're in! Nothing a cup of Teapig 'Peppermint / Licorice' tea and a kit kat won't cure.
omg mate you have got it bad ha ha
if your dream included a new (not released yet) RS3 then I could have some sympathy on a last minute choice but the S1 instead of the S5 that is great.
I thought I was bad enough enduring the wait and the last few weeks do tend to be the worse for some weird reason, think it is because you know its getting close so do start to think about it more.
Have you agreed an actual pick up date yet with your Dealer ie 1st June (to get full road tax) or are you gonna take it the minute it is available towards the end of May ?
Taking it the minute it arrives!
I'm not quite sure how I did it last time but my S3 turned up on the 28th of October 2011. The dealer managed to 'wangle' a November tax disc for that rather than October, so will be asking the same favour again as it's likely to turn up (unless shipping delays - there have been a lot of bank holidays recently!) between 26-30th May.
I like my S3, but because I've had to remove all the bespoke elements that made it feel more special it just feels like an A3 now
ha ha I thought you would say that ....... so as soon as the Dealer receives your car THE RACE WILL BE On to get it prepped and out the door to you
At least they don't have to wash it which saves time! Now that could have been a worse nightmare if I'd turned up to see it being washed!
I've got enough to do to it at my end before I'll be 100% happy with it, might take the day off work to:
> Paint hubs
> Fit spacers
> Fit LED lights
> Fit engine caps
Probably about 4-5 hours work there if I don't fanny about.
then off to France for a couple of days before I have to give it away AGAIN for the detail ;-(
Now you mention Hubs I have just realised mine are ok so far.
MAYBE on the A5/S5 they are treated to a higher quality finish ?
So far so good anyway ...... geez I am now nearly 6 months into S5 ownership already !!
Just think of the time you'll save not having to get the swirl marks out... But hey... how much damage could they cause to a new car...?
I can't believe it's been over 12 months for me now... wow so over 18 months since I placed the order and something like 20 months since first looking into it...
Have to say it's a real shame I've only done 5.5k miles, would love to be doing more(!?), sometimes find myself just going for a drive for the sake of it. Definitely the best car I've ever owned and just ticks so many boxes. I would say it's a great compromise, but that would be doing it an injustice IMHO.
Lol! I've asked Brian to give yours their top cleaning treatment when you go in for the MMI update. They've got their Brillo pads, scourers and pack of yellow scratchy dusters sat on the garage floor waiting to clean her for you ;-)
...... it is a great car to live with isn't it - totally agree !
I'll bet that was brought on by the chat about that new Sepang blue announced for the MY15 S5....!
Hopefully the Tea did the trick ;-)
BACK AWAY FROM THE CAR!
Sepang Blue ............... ommmmmmmmmmmm
I had a wobble on black with Estoril, but I think Sepang might have just pushed me over the edge.
This was the kind of colour I was dreaming last night:
oh jeeeeeeeeeeesus that is scary and it's hardly sprint blue is it
At least you got a pic of a facelift model....
It could of been worse if the dealer takes you out the back and theres a lovely shiny Phantom Black S5 Black Edition waiting for you then you wake up all wet and sticky
Imagine explaining that away to the missus!
So far the least interesting modification for the car, but given I may have to park in some of the UKs major cities I don't think I dare do without it. What a waste of good money :-(
I hope you don't have any strange dreams about that Disklock
