I also am looking into this, and have a few things in mind, that invlove keeping this car, or getting another.

500bhp is achievable, and would mean one serious motor. I have been out in a 400bhp S4, and it was crazy fast with bags of torque.

Me and my mechanic have drwan up a £10k plan, that will make a serious bit of kit.

Only thing that puts me off is reliablity, mpg (not major), insurance etc. As I use my car for work, I am getting a TDi to run daily, and if I can afford to, garage my S4. Using a 500bhp as a company car is a no-no, as much fun as it would be!

With buying a tidy S4 (mine lol) and maxing it out, £20,000 all inwould make something that would chew pretty much everything else on the road to bits, and still transport you and 4 mates around, with room in the boot for the shopping/missus!

how would you get 500bhp? the ko4 turbos will only go to around 440bhp wont they? Are you just looking at bigger twin turbos, or can you go single on these?

Hybrids mate!! Will need the bigger SMIC's, or even a FMIC. Can go single, but alot of work IMO, check this out!

    INSANE!!

I have a list on me pc somewhere off all the bits you'd need.

    DO IT! lol

hybrid ko4? Id probably go for a front mount. Would my fmic of my s3 fit? So what would the hybrids flow to bhp? Also i guess it will still spool up quick as they are quite small?!

550bhp from hybrids, same shape as a KO4, with different internals.
Dont know about the FMIC off the S3, but at a stab id say you need a bigger one.
Lots of bits are availabe on the cheaper side, like Y pipes, SMIC's, brakes etc, but with turbo's id only ever buy brand spankers, as you have to fit and forget.
Will beg out for downpipes, as these are restrictive as standard, and just with these alone, the S4 will breathe alot more easily!
Would also need to think about a new bottom end, forged pistons etc, to cope with the massive power. An RS4 clutch is next to nothing to buy, and with engine out, its easy to do there and then.

Tough one. Easily good for the 400bhp, but if you want crazy power (which is the case by the sounds of it) i'd rebuild from the bottom up. Last thing you want is something going pop when youve spent money and time making the ultimate sleeper sports saloon!
Will need RS4/RS6 brakes, and these stop the S4 dead in its' tracks, worth doing this first, along with some decent shocks.
550bhp with around 500lb/ft, is serious and would chew everything.
Seen any S4's that take ya fancy>?

How much power can you get out of an S4? Project Satanschild is aiming for 1000bhp and there's a Polish S4 currently running over 900bhp.
    :salute:

RS6 turbos can be used, but they need modification. The US guys are starting to use these more, and off the shelf kits are starting to crop up. I reckon these would probably be a bit laggy, so I agree with Matt that hybrids would be your best bet.

Having said that, I know of at least two cars running 500bhp on just standard K04's. Now these cars will be running crazy boost and won't be there for the long haul! I think both are just 'experiments' to see what you can get out of K04's. The S4 internals are on their limit here. Any more and you're looking at rods and head work.

Your S3 FMIC won't work on an S4, although two might... count the turbos!

What's your budget if you don't mind me asking?

oh yea two turbos isnt gonna work with my fmic! well including buying one would be around £16000, ive seen a few s4 i like, but i want either cream leather or alcantara. Also would like a noggy blue one, or a white one (guess this would be a respray job!) I think 500 -550bhp would be enough! How about the gear box is that ok?

Gearbox will be fine. Unless you're looking at buying a car which already has some mods, ie: brakes/coilovers/exhaust or a high miler, I think you might struggle to get 500bhp out of £16k.

There's a guy on here (ZeroK66) who's spent over £30k on his S4. It's imola yellow, running over 500bhp and has 475lb-ft torque. He's mentioned that he'd let his go for around £18k, and it's only got about 50k miles on it so it's a bloody bargain! Might be worth dropping him a PM.

Here's his 0-140 run on the Top Gear airstrip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0rqgajcXAA

And here's his spec (pulled off the comments from his 0-160 run on youtube):
    Stage3+
    Ported,polished+clearanced K04s
Cust tubular exhaust manifolds ceramic coated
Custom intake pipes in 2.5" diameter, tapering to slide fit on compressor inlets
Custom compression dropping Headgaskets from (8.2:1 CR)
    2001.5 intake manifold (no mods)
    APR Bi-pipe
    RS4 MAF and Y-pipe
    Custom 3" downpipes + dual 2.75" exhaust
Bosch motorsport 044 special 10 Bar fuel pump
728cc/min injectors at 4 Bar rail pressure
    FMIC and custom IC piping
    Custom Remap
    RS6 EGT Sensors

And that's not mentioning his Bilstein PSS9 coilovers, H&R Arbs, RS6 Brakesm, 19" BBS rims, etc.

What do you call low mileage?

Reckon you're looking at around the £7k mark for a pre-facelift car with under 80,000 miles.

Some of the S4's have starship mileage. One of the guys at MRC recently bought an S4 with nearly 200k miles on it with the original turbos. Properly maintained, they will just keep on going.

Mine has 166K on the clock and is climbing. Still on original turbos. In a way, I would not mind if they did go bang. She will not know the difference between a KO3 and a KO4 on the bill...

LOL, funnily enough I keep thinking the same. The downside is that I keep thinking I will just go straight to 500bhp if that happens. I cant see the point in paying to get the engine out and not doing it, that's silly IMO LOL.

I am probably not too badly off though as I already have the brakes, exhaust system, RS4 suspension and clutch so its not going to be quite as big a hit on the wallet.

if your looking to get 500+ hp then in all honesty i wouldnt be starting with a S4 engine

    I'd be looking at a 4.2 V8 and a pair of GT28RS's or similar.

probably cost less too, everythings under much less stress (you'd probably be on about 8-12psi), and the noise....

I've been thinkin about this recently, so I'm gonna put it out there. Why spend a fortune tuning an S4 to 400-500 brake when you cold just sell your S4 and buy a reamapped RS4 with 400+ brake for around £17k? I think this is what I'd rather do if it's gonna cost more than £10k on tuning, parts, fitting etc. You've got all the parts you're ever gonna need, built properly, in an even more legendary car! Just a suggestion.......Make sense?

Horses for courses. Some people like the shape and style of the B5 saloon, and want the sleeper. I love the B5 Avant RS, looks soooo good, and not many know what is lurking under the sensible shell. Kinda like the RS6! Room for the family, and a whacking great 450bhp straight out the box, for around £20k!
When I spoke to Awesome about the bits they can get, they told me of a Doctor who had the 400bhp conversion. He wasnt short of cash, and like dnothing more than the bi-turbo B5!

tbh with the extent of the work you'd be doing to it, it would be wise to point out you'd barely need to start with an S4 shell anyway. Any quattro shell would be fine, as everything that makes an S4 an S4 would be getting changed, renewed or upgraded anyway.

My car is one of the MRC S4's running 500bhp. Other than compression dropping head
gaskets the engine in standard. have done about 15k on it in 3 years. still as good as the day we built it...

if you're not bothered about shed loads of torque, then a a4 1.8TQ.

only 4 cylinders to upgrade and only one turbo. these can see 450-650bhp.

Didn't realise your K04's were standard Brett. That makes at least 3 then!

    Yours, Spen's and Minhea's.

Looks like I need to get myself an FMIC to unleash the rest of the h*rses!!!
