    Right guys,

Seriously silly question here... Just had another S3 at the house for the last few days that had the full BCS turbo back system on it... anyway, LOVE the burble off it and and are now left my quiet standard exhaust on my own car....

My question is, in the mean time while I try and save my pennies to get a full new exhaust system is there any daft mods to do to the standard exhaust to get more of a burble from it?

I've heard of that 'runner flap delete' thing I think its called, is that any louder?... i'm not daft in thinking that its gonna sound anywhere near the BCS... just looking for a wee bit more noise at idle sorta revs without taking a drill to it ha...

A differet style topic to discuss..... fire away!

Well in the meantime, think about the proper system & how much not wasting money on crappy "in between mods" will help you get there allot quicker :)

can you disconnect the flap the in the rear pipes? so its always open? We used to do this on the bms but it made them a bit droney imo.

I'm not gonna spend any money on mods doing it... just any insiders tricks of the trade mods thats out there.. like that runner flap delete thing.. anything else out there? I know i'm probably pissing into the wind, but its worth a shout?

yeah you can disconnect it and tie it open with some fish line or cable tie or the likes... supposidly gives the same 3000rpm burble at low revs... but not actually done it.... its the flap in the left tailpipe

can you not disconnect the electrical plug from the solenoid? I presume its in the boot? If disconnecting the rubber pipe you need to plug it to stop a vac leak as well.

I think all you do is disconnect the control arm... it still moves but doesnt actually operate anything

If you remove the pre cat that should help a bit and that's free

You can do a 1 minute quick mod that keeps the flap open all the time, and yes i've done it and it does work. Its not gonna make it sound like a Miltek or BCS but youll be suprised how gruff the standard exhaust can sound.
Dont diconnect the linkage to the flap as the flap will be left floating and may just stay closed or rattle.
Dont disconnect the solenoid, youll throw up an error code.
Just clamp the vacuum pipe to the actuator for the flap. Thats it.
The valve is electrically operated and vacuum operated. In normal operation at tickover the flap is open but when you move off the flap closes (can make a loud click on some cars). The flap only opens again when the car exceeds a set speed and rpm (i forget which but probably 60kph and 3000rpm). Its for EU noise regs really.
So by clamping the vacuum pipe the vale will remain open all the time. I used a cable clamp from a fish tank to do it.
    hope that helps

Remove the pre-cat and unplug the vacuum pipe to the back box (don't forget to plug it).

The first one is not an easy task btw and definitely not recommended for a driveway! Others have removed the middle silencer but I can't vouch for what effect it will have on the sound. The Milltek / BCS is definitely a deeper sound.

NHN is correct but not everybody wants to (or can afford to) go the whole hog.

The flap in the exhaust backbox is different from the runner flaps, which are in the inlet manifold.

Deleting those will give you a pretty poor cold start unless you run and use APRs software specific for that application.

You would also need a set of these.....

The inlet manifold needs to come off,the flaps need to be removed, and these little guys fit into the slots that hold the flaps.

The point here is that it won't change the sound of the car at all,and it's a performance mod only.

    Not really.

It would be a few bhp at peak rpm but it's been done in preparation for the head being done and a new intake manifold.

Hi mate my car has had the exhaust flap mod done and does sound rather good; however there is a noticeable drone at 60 mph in 6th, but it doesn't bother me.

It was done by the previous owner and I have no intention of reverting it back to std:laugh:
