I have the forge one fitted via Awesome GTI in Manchester.

They advised that the side-side one may cause you to miss gear and the up / down shorter shifter is suffice. So on this basis, I wont be buying a side-side.

Thats my personal opinon though :)

I think a front to back shift is alot better. The throw is so damn long!

slightly off topic, what about the Audi TT shifter? I heard it was cheaper and better than the forge shifter??

Don't bother with the TT shifter, go for the Mk4 R32 shifter, according to ukmk4's it's shorter side to side than both the S3 and TT shifters but maintains the OE vibe. It's also only circa £22! I'm currently trying to buy one from Stoke Audi, if they actually ever get back to me...

This is something i may be interested in, especially at that price.
Does it shorten the length of the gear changes?

Apparently it shortens it from top to bottom by about 20%. I'll let you know how it 'feels' when i've receievd and fitted mine.

why do we have to rely on after-market for shortshifters? why cant manufacturers get it right first?

I remember the shortshifter that was OEM on my escort RS2000 - that was just brilliant and how all factory shifts should come!

Dunno, but I'll find out shortly. Rumours are that it's pretty easy though (otherwise I wouldn't be trying it).

That's what i was thinking too. Can you have both side to side and front to back shifters?

I doubt you can use two shifters at the same time...I'm sure there are manufacturers of shifters which shorten both motions. I'm not sure but I think Dieselgeek might make one but IIRC they are quite pricey.

Ive not tried any other shortshifters, so I cant compare, but the dieselgeek is great - its nots as smooth as OEM, it feels a bit 'notchy' but I like that, and if feels half the size of OEM, which is the whole point!! - as far as I'm concerned, its one of the best value for money mods you can do

Just an update on this. I sourced a Mk4 R32 shifter and asked Awesome to fit it today whilst the car is being serviced but it turns out the part is exactly the same as that already on my car

My car was standard when I bought it so I can only assume Audi fitted R32 shifters to later S3's? Either that or the information located here (Audi-TT Short Shift Part Number - uk-mkivs) is incorrect?

Another update on this. I asked Awesome to investigate further and the R32 shifter is indeed shorter vertically than the S3 one. Mines now fitted and, although the motion is only slightly changed, it is shorter and feels more direct. I think it's a good OEM+ mod and is well worth the £26ish price for the part :)

Who fitted it? Is it much of a shorter throw between gears dude?

Awesome GTi fitted it as part of some other work I was having done. It's shorter top to bottom (not side to side as that's tight enough IMO) by about 20%. It's not a massive difference but enough to notice.

Do you have the part No for the R32 item? Might have to give this a try for that price.

I've not heard good things about the side short shifter personally. Makes it very easy to select gears you don't want.... :(

It's further up this thread mate - Stoke Audi supplied my shifter.

Exactly why I only wanted the vertical throw shortening!

been looking at getting a short shifter, seems to be a mix of staying with a OEM and after market.

what are peoples personal comments on either

i got a 1999 A3 1.8T so not sure what to go for.

any help would be good thanks

Mine is an aftermarket one. Not even a Forge one to be fair. I won it for 99P on ebay and have been using it for about 8 months now.

No problems thus far apart from being a little unhappy about going into gear occasionally - mostly first and second.

Being perfectly honest mate, no idea at all. It is an EXACT replica of the forge one though. There were quite a few of them kicking about on ebay for a while.

    I might have a go at fitting the R32 gear selector Part number:1J0 711 051 M

Just checked the parts list and this part number is listed for the S3, found this photo so i will have a look and see what i have fitted to my car.

If i can get it to feel like my old MK2 RS2000 i would be happy!

None the gearbox end selector fork changes will give you this, you need a B&M type replacement gearstick
