jus wondering how good is the haldex system, if flooring it in the wet etc is it minimal wheel spin or constant traction? does the s3 have same set up as RS3 n launch control, cheers!

    hopefully getting s3 soon :)

It's a fantastic system mate. My s3 is running 367 bhp a zero traction issues. And a right laughter in the snow. Hurry up and buy one. You will not regret it. But fuel economy is rubbish. :nyah:

Its a good system but dont go thinking its like a 4WD as the system only works when the from wheels loose traction, albeit it kicks in within 1/8th of a turn of the wheel loosing grip but still! also doesnt work over 60mph iirc and costs alot to repair as i found out with my Golf R32 :). there are also 2 versions on the S3 depending on the year your llooking at it could either be a 2nd generation or 4th generation which will be the same as the RS3 which i belive can shift torque to any wheel not just between the front and rear axle like the 2nd generation. Eitherway you wont be dispointed its a good system all the same :).

Its mostly 2WD and kicks in when needed yea. wouldnt say it will be the same as an evo or scooby then they have proper permanet systems etc but it wont be far off. Basiclly will save you some fuel in the long run and gives you better grip off the line etc. You wont regret it! And from my experience no you wont get any wheel spin, maybe on the odd occasion but all depends on tyres and condiitons etc. Will certainly show up an ST and not just off the line either!.

I know what you mean sparky. You want instant power/accel without the delay of wheel spin. I would say that you get that instant power with the S3. Mines a 2010. If I get any wheel slip its for a split second then the 4wd kicks in and off you go. The S tronic also helps. I had a mapped GTTDI golf before which had the power but couldn't put it down. Get the S3 you won't be disappointed. I'm not...

Essentially yes, within 1/8th of a turn of the front wheel spining the haldex will kick in, a video to try and explain it

Audi A3 quattro 2.0TFSI DSG Slow Motion SloMo Snow Launch - Haldex Response Time... - YouTube

Thanks it certainly was! It was identical consumption wise to an S3, my cousin bought a 2007 S3 quattro and i bought a 2007 Golf R32 a month earlier we were boithing seeing roughly 200-250 miles from a tank, saw 300 once on a run to newcastle but you wont get much more than that. The only difference was the Tax band lol. If you havent bought one yet and are looking at a 2009 one find a Black edition one as it will have some nice extras like Bose which you also wont regret buying i ahve it in my current A3.

I think its awesome myself, its about having a clear sound with Bose, i can turn it all the way up and its crystall clear, if the pas anger shouts at you you cant hear them thats how loud it is!. The base is good and better than a normal system you tell a sub is there but its not as powerfull as a custom one if you know what i mean? Its not **** far from it, worth the money in my eyes and will be going for it on future A3s / S3s lol.

:iagree: Mines an Ice silver Sportback black ed. Its standard and staying that way. Blew a turbo and wrecked a cam shaft and clutch when I remapped the golf. Bose is good but the auto volume thing it comes with is a little weird. parking sensors, auto lights and rain sensors are all good but possibly unnecissary. I love the S-tronic on mine. Sat nav works but I don't use it much. Its good to have the display for Ipod and MP3 use though. All in all its a good package. Power and 4wd when you need it and relatively economical when you want to be. I considered the WRX STI, Focus RS, BMW 330, Golf R and GTI when I was looking and it took me a year to decide but I'm glad I went with the S3.

Haldex is a bit of a mixed bag really.

If you view it as mostly 2WD,with 4WD thrown in under conditions where the fronts begin to lose traction, then you aren't far off.

Adding in the optional(and costly) Haldex controller will allow you to sharpen up it's response time, and the degree to which it preloads the rear, and under those conditions,it's pretty good, for what is basically an electro-hydraulic clutch.

As Breezey says,it's not the same as other 4WD systems, and frankly will not feel the same as the Torsen or Quaife torque biassing diffs, which run a different torque split from front to rear, and will remain in 4WD all the time.

I've had torque biassing diffs on an Escort Cosworth before, and they can be much snappier, and difficult to control at the limits, but more capable.

With the uprated controller,in stock mode, the Haldex system will lose traction easier than in sport or race modes, but most of that criticism applies to heavily modified cars.

    Thanks....

Yes it is a good system, and works well, but has limitations compared to some others.

Even so,it was good enough for Kenneth Hansen to win a bag of rallycross championships with.

It just feels different to an ATB system, and won't go beyond a 50:50 torque split.

    that sounds like syncro.

haldex actually works pretty well, and it's on over 60 even over 120. if you look at any dyno clip (there's plenty of them) you'll see that.
it's working all the time but it's not transfering max torque to the rear, except when you're braking then the the rear axle is disengaged (there's competition controller that keeps it engaged under braking)
gen4 has almost equal power transfer front rear, and maybe even better than gen2 performance controller in race mode.
here's a good link with everything explained and the power transfer graphs so you can se how it performs :icon_thumright:

I think larsmate is referencing your spelling (or lack of).

Back on topic - traction on my S3 never fails to impress me, for a system that shifts between FWD & 4WD there is no noticeable loss of traction before torque is redistributed. The only time I've managed to get all 4 wheels to spin was when I was messing about on the snow.

This is all with a standard car by the way, just for reference.

    Thought it might be!

Mine was fine when I bought it but half the reason for the recent round of spending was to get traction and handling sorted out.

On the previous tyres I could get wheelspin up to 3rd gear in the dry.

    Lol.

With the black ed you get a black grille, black surrounds to the fog lights, black tint on the rear passenger backwards and a black fin for the radio. You also usually get the titanium black ed wheels but mine has got the 18'' sline ones becasue the previous owner specced them when he bought it as he thought the black ed ones were a bit 'chav'

Inside the black ed continues with black piano inlays in the doors and a black (more of a dark grey) roof liner, black piano surround to the gear stick.
I forgot to mention before... cruise control (very useful) and heated leather seats (Ace for the winter) Blue tooth connector thing for the phone is cool. I press a button and say 'call the wife' and it does. ha!
Not sure if it has DAB. Does anyone know how to tell if you do?
If you can get a black ed I really would they just seem that little bit extra special and I don't see many of them about. All depends on the pennies I guess...

Oh and auto dimming rear view mirror (and wing mirrors I think which are heated. Also cool) I love that. People up my chuff with bright lights used to drive me up the wall. No More. I guess you could always just drop a gear, put your foot down and they turn into a little speck but you get the idea :superman:

It already had the tyres! .... Been through PS2s,PS3s,F1Assys,R1Rs and so on...

Mine's been modified through Stg1 all the way to Stg4,and we did the ARBs and suspension first, with kW v3 coilovers.

As the power went up,the brakes were changed as well,to a VWRacing kit(which has been modified further),and the Haldex controller added.

For a Stg2+ car, that's probably more than you'll ever need, but as we added a bit more power, the remaining understeer was still a problem, highlighted at AMD's trackday last year,so the final round of mods came in.

kW Clubsport suspension with adjustable topmounts,Team Dynamics 1.2 rims and 245x40x18 R888 tyres.

That's all on my build thread here....

As we all know Alex's thread is epic! Fantastic effort! Enjoy the read lol!

Now how do you find the Team Dynamics 1.2 Alex? I've been close to picking some up as there really well priced. The vibe i get off people is that they look down at them because you can get them from Halfords lol but i was speaking to Ben @ AmD a few weeks ago when i was up there and he said they are a really good quality strong wheel that are also light! Whereas BBS alloys yes they do look nice but they tend to be not as strong & are over double the price.

Look forward to your thoughts mate. Oh & apologies hijacking the thread!

    All of that!

Lightweight, well made, and good enough for the BTCC.

That's why I chose them....I didn't want to add loads of weight, but wanted something that would be made to the right spec re: offset etc,and these fitted the bill perfectly.

Around 500bhp with adjustable boost from zero with presets at 0.5 bar,1 bar and 2 bar.

Allows a bit of common sense for nasty conditions!

All of the good software companies, like Revo,APR,Shark and so on will give you around 310-320 bhp at Stg1 and the clutch may or may not cope.

I'd always advise budgeting on replacing it when remapping the car in case.....mine managed Stg1,but melted immediately at Stg2 and we replaced it with a Sachs which lasted until Stg3 at 440 lbs of torque.

that must be close too 3 secs or lower to 60 mate!! stage 3 600nm torque thats amazing throwing back in the seat with that. would the stage 1 be roughly 400nm torque? are the remapping expensive or similar to focus ST etc
