My S3 Started making a rattling sound on idle
then when in traffic the temperature went
right up to 100/120.

Had similar issues on mine earlier in the week (see http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-...verheating-issues-water-pump.html#post1614655)
My suspicions were confirmed, water pump had broken (common issue), new one along with new cambelt and thermostat and its running fine again.

1x S3 and 3x Fiestas.
Yeh it's very common, get all the work done that is stated above. Mine went at 92k after the water pump was not replaced by the last owner when the cam belt was done at 60k.
