I just took a drive out to the coast and back with the family - mainly A roads at a steady 60mph and a bit of stop start in traffic, plus a couple of over takes - covered 68 miles. Average fuel consumption for the journey = 40.6 mpg!!!! For a car with 300 bhp, that is massively impressive. Anyone else done better with their S3?

Not for me, 26kmpg in my first 2 tanks (economy mode). I think it will get better.
My driving is all in city with a lot of traffic, even the start/stop mode didn´t help.

That's good! I've easily managed over 40 mpg on a run too. Best I have had was 42.1 mpg on 26 mile drive to work. But that was driving fairly saintly!

I've found the economy mode actually seems to be worse on MPG for me and the roads I drive. Mid 30's.

Economy mode is rubbish and I hate the coast feature. On a run managed 44mpg mainly down to average speed cameras on the m1 and my car never leaves dynamic mode.

Its good that if you want the high mpg its available to you, but normally it no where near the 40's :)

Which mode is most efficient then for you guys in terms of mpg? Seen it said a few times now that economy is not the best…

I'd go with comfort for best mpg. I usually stick to dynamic though.

Have mine in individual set with everything on dynamic apart from gearbox.

On that setting have had the best economy.

It's good enough for my needs. Even say if it's 10% out the economy is good for what the car is.

In fact, actually I don't know why I bother looking at it or committing to memory any specific MPG figures as fuel costs aren't really an issue.

It's great having a weekend toy :racer:

Your having a laugh if you think im gonna do a manual calculation to get the right mpg figure mate.

Maybe try the diesel lot, im sure you'll interest them, they love stuff like mpg calcs ;)

I had mine in dynamic mode when I did the 44mpg, honestly its more about how you drive it to what setting its on, I doubt theres much difference between the modes.

Lol - does anyone know if specific brands of super unleaded makes any difference ?

Probably stupid question to ask on a car forum......:undwech:

I do around 17k a year, so fuel consumption does matter to me... well, as long as it's not horrendous I suppose. I had a TTS and that could barely average 28mpg, now matter how saintly I drove it. I then got a TTRS and that waa actually better, at 30mpg. I put that down to the 7th gear on the s tronic. I don't use the Efficiency setting on my S3 - just can't be doing with the lack of engine breaking. Mine was set to Individual when I got 40mpg on Saturday - that's dynamic for steering, exhaust and default setting for the gear box. Drove up to Lincolnshire today, wasn't hanging around... A14, A1 and the along some fast Fen A roads; lots of over takes because of slow moving lorries - covered 72 miles, got just under 35mpg. I'm averaging 34 after covering 800 miles since taking delivery. Very pleased with my S3 so far... fast and economical. Who needs a diesel?! LOL!

Just back from a weekend in the Lake District.
80mph all the way from Suffolk to Cumbria (with air-con, cruise control and eco mode) , a bit of a strop around the Lake District's excellent passes (not in eco mode) and back to Suffolk.

Average MPG (indicated by the car) 38.3mpg....! Well chuffed with that!

I have absolutely no idea how you guys are managing to achieve these sorts of figures. Best I've had is around the 32mpg mark. The car's only done about 2700 miles from new so far so I'm hoping it'll improve over time but not expecting it to improve by that much!

On a long drive with plenty of motorway miles its really easy tbh, well at least high 30's anyway. To be only getting 32mpg on a run you'd have to be doing 85-90+mph.

I find you need to adjust your driving style to match the mode.

so economy more works best when you give the car every chance to coast. Dont accelerate hard ever, dont got over 60. I have actually dont this, and it does work, some road stretches can give you almost 1km of "free" driving. Also its kind of fun to hear the parp as the engine turns off to go into coasting mode.

Most of the time my car is in dynamic but in D not S mode for the S tronic. Normally this fits my driving style and the reason i bought the car, for the odd chance to put a smile on my face. Economy mode on a normal drive seems hard work, the lack of engine breaking and the way it wakes up can get annoying in some traffic. Also after driving with drnamic steering for a good few months, unless its a long motorway drive, I cant stand the soft steering you get in the other modes.

Personally think this and the 400 mile club thread explains for me why the S3 is on its way after only 7 months and 3100 miles.
It's not a car that gives excitement to drive quickly or that I get the urge to get in it and drive often.
It's possibly a better prospect when you don't think of it as being a fast exciting hot hatch, stick it in comfort and maximise the efficiency.

I guess we live and learn.

What were you expecting, a fire breathing monster? Seriously its a fast Audi there not gonna be that exciting out the box.

Personally I was never intending on keeping it as it came out the box, few choice mods and you'll have your fire breathing monster.

I guess modding isn't for everyone though.

I always use Shell V-Power, keep the the S3 in efficiency mode and set the ACC at 60mph and on my way to work i have seen 47.7mpg and before anyone starts saying "ooohhh you should use it what it was designed for blah blah blah" i'm saving that for when i go to the Nurburgring. :racer:

I've seen more from my 1.4, all depends upon the driving conditions and how the car is driven....

132 mile trip down to Plymouth today for a little weekend break.

Car was excellent on a cruise. Traffic was heavy mind and didn't really get chance to open the taps but managed 38 mpg all the same. Air con on whole time in efficency mode.

I have been driving about in S fro the stronic box and also using more flappy paddles in the fun way the last few days. Really hurst the MPG, down into the low 20s.

Car is such a pleasure to drive though, window down listening to that lovely exhaust note and little pop on gear change.

When I need to enjoy the car it lets me have fun, for the other times, it also surprises me with 40+mpg thats what i love about the S3 engine.
