Hi there new to this forum. I have a 2001 s3 Amk engine, bought a replacement over the net, when it arrived there is no Amk stamp on block ? Seller assures me it is a Amk,is there any differences with the bam or the apy engines,it looks the same as my Amk ,but don't want to it it then run into problems ?

Ask him for the VIN of the car it came from so you can verify through Audi what it was (assuming he gives you the right one) but there should be an engine code somewhere which would be the quicker way to confirm - if not be wary as to where he obtained it from !!

Look on the block flywheel end... the engine number should be dot imprinted on the edge of the block where the gearbox fits...

Why don't you just check before panicking as it may well be what you ordered :)

Yes mate, only problem is the apy is narrowband were as your amk and bam's are wideband.

For reference you will find the engine number in the area I have marked in red (thanks to Stacey for the pic... even if he doesn't know yet ;P)

You can use a BAM, AMK, APY from an S3... you can use a APX, BAM from a TT, AMK, BAM from an LCR... there are a few other 20mm pinned bottom ends you can use (AGU and whatever the Mk3 Ibiza Cupra is but they use 9.5:1 comp ratio rather than 9:1 of the 210/225's)

Check the number first... I assume this is a short motor as the engine code is also on the head...

It means nothing in context of what you are doing... ignore him.... bad lad Dani!! ;P

...but to clarify... the S3's with APY engine codes used an older ECU to the AMK... this makes no difference in your case as all you are doing is swapping the bottom end... (I am assuming this of course as you have not said otherwise)

Where you could have problems is if its a complete APY you are trying to swap then there are differences on the head... APY has secondary air injection, was non VVT and a different cam cover..

What exactly is it you are trying to fit? the whole engine or just the bottom end?

...and have you sorted that engine number out yet?

A few pics of the engine would help too

The head will have the engine code on a tab...

Find out these codes and/or take pics... can't help you any other way really...

Does the new head have a VVT tensioner?

Have you managed to get the engine number off the block yet? its not uncommon for the engine code to be machined off as it could be a fairly generic engine... I wouldn't want to fit it without knowing for sure as there are differnces that could compromise the engine in the case of an S3...

Audi refurb heads dont have anything on that tab.

The engine number should be on the edge of the block as mentioned above.
