Do a search mate, the temp sensor has been covered to death.

    Very common issue
This is due to it being able to alter the fuelling
It registers the engine temp and then the fuelling is altered , a bit like the auto choke
It is common and if left can cause an issue with the cat
059 919 501A is the new part number for them
Such a common issue they superceeded the part number
It is now a 4 pin green sensor instead of the 4 pin black

i have been experiencing similar symtoms.
would somebody be able to describe where the temp sensor is and how to change it.
    this would be much apreciated.

Does it affect the way the car runs? Lumpy idle, over revving etc?

I wouldnt have said that it affects the idling particularly. Its just once its up to temperature it wil drop right back down to about 60 degrees when driving along.

Had this replaced on my 2003 S3 about 2 months ago. Engine light came on, took it to C&R in Nottingham who Vagcom'd it and identified the problem as the coolant temperature sensor. Made no real difference to the way the car ran, but I guess it'd affect the fuel mixture settings if it thinks it's running hotter/colder than it actually is.

Anyway, £45 quid & all done in 15 mins over a proper coffee in a proper mug. Replaced the standard black one with the green one & hey presto, fixed!
