I'd be inclined to say get your master cylinder checked mate. Mine had similar symptoms, although I didn't have any metal breakage and it wasn't that sudden. I struggled to get it in to gear for a day or 2 and then the clutch pedal started to struggle to come back up from the floor.

This has happened to my car a while back...it turned out to be a broken clutch pedal assembly (some plastic clips holding the clutch pedel in place) rather than a clutch.

Any idea how much this is going to cost me, is it something i can do myself, or would i best to take it into a vag specialist?

It can be done if your fairly competant mechanic. Its not a hard job but it is fiddly and if you think about where it is then you might think twice. Very cheap if you can do it yourself but expect to pay some good money from a dealer as their labour rates arent cheap

do a search through my old posts - there are pictures of the problem, its easy to fix and down to terrible design by vag... when you get the new pedal you can weld it so the problem will not happen again

ill have to look through my bills and see if i have the receipt - if you pop into your local audi / vw / seat / skoda dealer they should be able to get it for you.

refitting is totally possible without the special tool you just have to be patient and make sure no one who might be offended by swearing is in ear shot.

when you get the new pedal you will see there is one edge not welded, take the pedal to someone who can weld that for you, once you have gone through replacing this part you dont want it to EVER happen again ! after mine was welded i sprayed it with black paint to stop rust but thats probably not essential
