Rods = Bill.... and yes, hydraulic lifters in 20vs... make sure your mechanic FOLLOWS the instructions for fitting them... ARP bolts aren't the same as the OE ones...

If your planning on changing pistons to anything other than OEM ones you will need to completely strip the block and rebore it

I found ETKA and Elsawin really helpful software to have on your computer and can be had on many download sites ;)

I use 55ftlbs and yes, tighten then slacken, tighten then slacken and tighten for the last time... and by that I mean tighten both bolts on each rod then slacken both bolts on each rod in turn..

No tutorials as such... this is engine building... your guy will hopefully have some idea... I have gone into it a bit of detail in my build thread before...

Pistons won't need changing unless you have put a hole in them... if the valves have impacted them all you need to do is carefully flatten off the sharp edges to prevent hotspots from occurring and causing pre-ignition...

New rings need to be gapped correctly and you NEED to hone the bore to bed them in... you will also need to run mineral oil for at least the running in period of 100 miles or so before dumping it and putting fully synth back in

New shells needed too... Bill will have those... you will also need to check the small end clearance on the gudgeon pins... you may need to hone them a little... the pins need to slide in the small ends... if they bind then no oil can squeeze past to lubricate the pins or bush and you will end up with small end rattle...

Also advised is a new oil pump and pick up pipe..

... but then hopefully your guy knows this...

thanks for the pointers tuffty,I will have a good look threw your thread mate

is there any special tools required or would a garage have most of the tools needed ?

the plan is to replace as much as possible like all gaskets, oil pump pick up pipe and such while the engine is out that's why the rods are getting done to as it would be a shame not to when the chance is there

i will give bill a ring tomorrow and explain what's getting done and he will know the parts I need to order from him

Do you have a budget btw?

I did mine on a bit of a budget, i say a bit because its still bloody expensive.
I sourced oem 9.5 comp pistons for mine, and all the rest that goes with it.
Had i another 5-600 quid, id have loved to taken the block to 83mm and got some high comp CP pistons or similar.

    Something to consider.

I could go to 2k but that's leaving me on the skin of my arse but desperate to get it back on the road mate,am I right in thinking its only rods that's needed for 400bhp ? As I would like to do it so I have some head room for further mods

Are you utilising your current turbo? K26??

Im not sure i follow with that question? Only rods needed for 400?

What i meant by my previous post is that, if your going to do it, even only rods, which will be atleast 1k, and thats assuming your mechanic is v friendly. Then you may aswell do what ever you can, its an investment in your hunger for power, so what you do with this build, can help you in the future should you want more power and change turbo.

Hell, ive not even finished mine and i kick myself for not going 83mm pistons, just so its done ready for anything else i might want to add years down the line. I.e. Stroker crank.
    See What i mean.

If you just want your car back on the road asap with rods so you can enjoy what youve got, sure go ahead and do the basic minimum.

It will be with the k26 for now mate ,what I mean if the engine gets sorted and get the rods done would be enough to support 400 with the right turbo injectors etc etc

Yeah I see what you mean mate but with the rods done the and with the k26 all else I would plan on doing is a custom map and leave it at that as I couldn't afford anything else for a long time

im wanting to do the basic minimum but also do what's sensible to while the engine is out like oil pump and pick stuff like that as tuffty said

With rods, bearings, rings and all the pumps n gaskets and what no then the motor should easily take 400hp and similar torques.
so you can be confident that what youre doing should last you. And of course will be a great basis should you ever change the k26 for something bigger.

Good luck with it anyway. Im sure everything will be sweet.

May be worth dropping dan (beachbuggy) a line and getting him to work his magic on yours as could probably extract a reasonable amount more out of it with a billet wheel and of coarse its cheapest and easiest to do whilst it's already out ;)
