As above is a intercooler required to run stage 2+ ? If I ran stage 2+ with a uprated fmic would I see much difference over a stage2+ with a standard S3 intercooler.

Thanks

I don't think you would have much a BHP gain on cooler days but it would certainly stop you loosing power when ambient temperature is 20+ degrees c or higher.

Mat is spot on.

You may gain a bit over the stock system, but the real gains are that you don't lose bhp either on hot days,or when you push the car hard.

Thanks guys . Which fimc is best to go for? Does the forge one even fit facelift models?

What about THS ?

I've got a ProAlloy in mine, but as above,THS are good, and Airtec are also worth checking out.

I have the Revo FMIC only because it was offered to me for good money otherwise it isn't really required for 2+

I'd agree that it's not essential at Stg2+,but above that I think it definitely is a must.

Yes/No.

Yes, Forge has a Facelift version available as an intercooler replacement. I was the guinea pig. I gained 22bhp with it over the standard cooler.

No, The twintercooler will only fit the facelift if you cut the crash bar etc which isn't ideal. So that's best left with the pre face lift models.

Facelift users can now simply ignore the twintercooler and go with 'option 1'.

Well worth it.

Yours is a facelift like mine so I'm nearly 100% sure that it will have plastic end tanks and they are pretty rubbish at 2+ level (pre facelifts have the all ally version which is much better) the cooling is ok but its how well they flow.
I made 337bhp 360lb/ft with a standard cooler, swapped it to an airtec cooler and had the map tweaked it now makes 360bhp 399lb/ft

Here's my Airtec cooler, thought I'd put a few pics up as I've not seen anyone on here with one, it comes with the new boost pipes which are less restrictive than the originals which also helps!
If you want an Airtec speak to Rob at W8 Performance, send him an email and he can sort it out!

Hope thats of some help to you!

I've got an Airtec intercooler on my stage 2+ s3 but mines a 56plate so isn't the facelift version. I've also got the gloss black version.

I've been to the nurburgring, French alps, Swiss alps and stelvio pass in Italy with it fitted and I can honestly say, with the intercooler fitted I didn't notice any drop off in power, so it definitely makes a difference in the warmer weather at stage 2+.

I remember searching on google and found u asking the question if anyone had one, think it might have been on VAGOC.
I'm impressed with it! And from the sounds of it you are. Airtec are well known for ford but are trying to get into VAG and from my experience they are doing well.

Bought mine 2nd hand and I'm very impressed with it. I wasn't going to buy one but when it popped up so cheap I couldn't turn it down really.

As said the OEM intercooler on the facelift are not really that good.

An upgrade would help you getting more consistent power, and with less pressure drop you should make some more power as well

Airtec one looks great. Is there no way of getting the ic in front of the ac rad

I had a look while it was off, but you've got no chance, all the surroundings seem to be supported by the intercooler, fixings to both the radiator, air con rad an the plastics for the whole assembly.

APR one is really good but not twice as good as the Airtec especially price wise, that's how I looked at it when buying one

Does forge do both coolers ? And does the twintercooler fit a 2009 s3 ?

i have the twintercooler on the facelift. there's minor cutting involved of the crashbar which doesn't affect the overall strenght of the bar. supplied pipes on one side don't fit.

The new intercooler kit is bolt on, uses Forge pipes with uprated couplings, no cutting required option thankfully!

Link for anyone who'd like it ---->Forge Motorsport | Alloy Fabrication

I must admit it would have been nice to have the twintercooler, as its 'on show'. However practicality over rides It.

Their welding by the way is really special. Here's a photo they took whilst they were installing it.

One thing I can say for both Forge and ProAlloy is that the quality of their welding is superb.

Maybe you'd expect that, but it's true, and Forge's backup and sales teams are second to none.

Its a pitty that with the latest intercooler you can't see it! It's properly hidden between rad and air con rad.

Ah well, function over fashion I guess.

Definitely, but that's the problem with all the best bits.

You can't see the turbo or diff on mine, and those are properly nice!

at the time i bought my ic, there were very few options and forge didn't know that it doesn't fit the facelift. believe me i would love to go single bigger ic. but since i'm far, had to make new pipes on my own, pay the labour for the whole day of work. and from forge we got "sorry we didn't know it doesn't fit" at least that's what my suplier said.you can actually notice it if you know it's there, otherwise it's still stealthy.

and i think wagner one looks the best and it's quality might be the best but it's much more money than the others.

Guys - whats the cooler at the very front of the car? Where it has been pulled away slightly for access? Thanks.

yes it definitely does thank you. I have a facelift 2010 3dr manual out here in oz and have been trying to decied on the intercooler to use; this post has made my mind up thanks!

i had been recomended apr for 1004 fitting but at twic ethe price of the airtec including shipping from the uk i couldn't do it.

the airtec has now been ordered in black with black hoses from 'Auto Specialist' and should be here in a week or two. the website states:

'Comes complete with everything you need to complete installation, including step by step instructions, all is required is a good Mechanical knowledge and a good tool kit!'

I have asked for a copy of the instructions emailing so i can be prepared, they said they don't have an email copy.

I know thi sis pretty cheeky but any chance of getting ac opy that came with yours if you still have them please mate.

ps what tune are you using if you don't mind me asking, i'm chasing the same power as you.

definitely does mate thanks. i was eying up one of these and wasn't sure whether to take the plunge until i saw you had fitted one.

i have now ordered the black cooler with black hoses. i asked the supplier if they could email the fitting instructions in advance so i could start to get my head around it. i know this is a bit cheeky but any chance you still have a copy please?

ps also would like to know what tune you are running if you don't mind as i'm chasing the same power as you, cheers

Mine didn't come with any! Forgot to have a moan to the suppliers actually lol.
I had a look through forge's, they are on their website. I had all my bumper off the week before so knew had to take that off, you will need a lift what swapping the intercooler as the rad, intercooler and air con rad all come out at once then you have to try an get the intercooler out the middle.

I have an R-Tech map on mine.

cool, thanks mate. i'll start to study the install guide now. i might get in touch with r-tech and see if the can ship overseas.

edit: forgot to ask if it comes with the longer fixing bolts to temporary slide the unit forward?

There's no longer bolts to temporarily move it forward. Not that I realised anyway but as I say in ever had the instruction?
R-Tech only do live mapping at their premises so they are not going to be able to do anything for you if ur out the country sorry!

Hi guys i'm in the same boat now choosing a fmic for me facelift s3. I cant make my mind up with either the proalloy or the airtec is there much in it, cheers
