Well took my S3 to AMD the other day because it was making a funny noise, to find out that the rear diff is on its way out. For a new one, to be ordered and fitted it is going to cost me 3500. Which was a big shock to the system!! As I can't afford to pay that atm, and dont want to get rid of the car because i have only owned it for a year. so i am looking to find a secondhand rear diff that will fit my 57 plate 8P S3 any help from you guys on here would be great. it can't be newer than an 09 rear diff though as i have been told by audi that they are differant.

    Thanks

What symptoms did you have out of curiosity? So people could know what to look out for.

Has it been serviced previously? How many miles on it?

    Should be serviced every 20k

started getting a wining sound when changing down through the gears high in the revs above 3000 RPM and a slight wining and rumble when driving and above 3000 RPM.

Yeah but has the diff been serviced specifically? Oil change and filter change?

The diff shouldn't be RPM related, it's roadspeed related, so if it whines or rumbles at 50mph, it will do it regardless of the gear you're in. Unless it's load-related and you are figuring this with the more load at 3000rpm.

Sure it's not a noise/whine coming out of the speakers?

This happen to mine and got it replaced by audi brand new part...

Ended up being some specialist making the mistake of draining the diff rather than the haldex during a service :/

Haldex does, diff doesn't. Fill for "life".

Finally got the diff fixed, I took my car to a local garage as my dad knows they guys that work their. It turns out that the inner bearing on the diff was shot, so they replaced this and the noise has now gone. So just to let anyone on here know to make sure that you get a decent dianostics done if you ever have rear diff trouble before forking out £3000 on a hole new diff.
