So, these are quite quick aren't they! Had one next to me in Birmingham at the weekend, where two lanes merged. I pulled away without booting it, as did he, but kept side by side. I then realised he was not going to let me in so booted it and really only managed a car length maximum before he let off, flashed and let me in with a thumbs up (which was nice).

What would these things remap to, and what are people's opinions of them over my S3?

(yes I know this is the 8L section, but interested non the less)

Yeah they are quick I'm pretty sure there at the 200bhp mark same as the golf mkv same engine also plus less weight to the 8l
should remap around 250 mark so it would be a tight race!

I remember there was a thread on here not so long ago about the A3 with the 2.0T FSI engine. I'll try and find it, but from memory, a lot of people were saying that that are nearly as quick as a standard 8L S3, and they remap very well too.

The k04'd 2.0 tfsi engine set up is a dream.
    They have been mapped ( with a few mod's ) to much more than a hybrid'd 8L S3

Is your S3 standard then ? Id imagine the 2.0 T non quattro to be on par with an 8L S3 due to weight and less transmission losses.
Its supposed to be a nice free revving engine and doesn't run out of puff as much as ours.

From standstill with the always perfect DSG upshifts..... I'd be confident in mine, everytime.

Then when flicking up and down between gears.... manual mode. Not as confident, but still quite confident.

Whichever is modified the most would win I bet. Revo figures for the 8P of 250bhp and 285lbs is pretty much bang on what Im seeing currently.

I personally think this is a more realistic comparison between the 8L and 8P.

    put it this way, standard 8P S3 is same as a rempped 8L S3 - tested ;)

the 2.0T FSI is a smaller turbo i believe....but like most of these cars will be similar mid range i reckon

K03 Tim, according to a kind chap in the 8P section. INteresting to see the comments in there. Usual helpful with one slightly over eager (I say eager, I mean one sided ;)) view. All interesting though. Wondered about a lower mileage, updated look . . .

yeah i thought the same when i bought and still do when i see the new daytime running lights......i just know i'll regret the move unless i can get myself into an 8P S3, n i dont want the old 8P, i want those facelifted ones, even though they have big daft wing mirrors :)

I do like the new 8p, driven my boss's sportback 2.0tdi and its nice to be in a new car, although the wing mirrors are stupidly big, but they dont seem as special, the flared archs on the 8l S3 are subtle but make it different. Mind you I did see a blue 8p S3 the other day and it did look good. Didnt think much to the standard sports seats in the 8p range, not had the benefit of seating in the S3 recaros but annoys me that these are an option and not fitted as standard. Not sure if id go for the 2.0T 8P or the mkV golf gti if i was able to afford/looking for a new car, mind you with the cost of fuel/insurance/tax if I ever change car im going down the oil burner route now, thats the real bonus of the 8L S3 its the best alrounder in terms of performance vs cost vs spec/toys.

    That's a point, 8L S3 only falls into the £245 tax bracket because it's pre 2005 registered. . . so new S3 would be 400 odd . . . ?

yes but i dont think that would bother you if you were laying out 20-30k for an 8P S3 :)

No, the new S3 is quite good on emmissions, but the 3.2 V6 isn't which is why it was dropped.

Ah is this why they're so cheap then Joe? There are loads of 3.2V6s for sod all money (relative to their power).

Plus that have problems with their timing chains and tensioners I think which could prove costly if it snaps.

Ye manufacturers have a average CO emissions to meet for the whole range of the cars they sell coming in the next year I think.

8P S3 is the same to tax as the 8L S3, the 3.2v6 is heavy on fuel too 26 average mpg according to parkers, where as the 8P S3 is 33mpg average, with the rise in petrol 2nd hand big engine cars are becoming cheaper as the average peson is looking for cheaper running costs.

If you can afford an 8L S3 now you will be able to afford an 8P S3 in a couple of years.
