2 of my wheel hubs have a light rust on them and I am planning to remove the alloys and smarten it up ! Any suggestions what to use, I was thinking of rubbing it down lightly with some wire wool then maybe silver hammerite the spray on type or do you guys know of a better product ?

All suggestions welcomed /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I painted the centre hubs of my old Golf's disc and also did the caliper carriers as well. Just used smooth hammerite. work fine.

Mine have gone the same way. I have bought some smooth hammerite to sort it out. Just need to find the time and the weather!

Thanks Guys.

Painted mine they looked terrible totally rusty, it had been bugging me for a long time. so this is what i did.

Rubbed down the hubs to bear metal using wet and dry, in dry mode.

Wiped hub with petrol to remove diry and grease.

Masked up area

Sprayed with halfords exhaust manifold heat resistent paint alluminium silver. Couple of coats. Perfect colour match, and factory smooth finish.

Drove car hard and performed some heavy braking to cure the heat resistent paint.

4 weeks later couple of jet washes, paint is still on and looks a treat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I just used the brush on type. Nice and easy.

Mine the same, started showing rust at just a few weeks old. Wheels off, rub down with wet and dry and brushed on smooth Hammerite (silver) they look fine.
If you do use Hammerite make sure you buy the proper thinners so you can clean your brush afterwards.
All available fron Halfrauds...

Get em painted by Audi, Under Warranty. You have to sign a discloser for the painting but still.

They use Folia Tech by the way.

They're cast iron and bound to rust, but you are saying that Audi accept this shouldn't happen and will paint them FOC ?.

Awww ... I was so disappointed to find that this topic wasn't about a porn star /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Surely audi will tell you you get stuffed (politely) ?

Errr... my fuel tank keeps emptying when i drive the car? can you fix it under warranty?

That's what I thought !! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/noidea.gif

Nope they will paint them, You have to sign a disclaimer saying if the brake "Hubs" Fail then they are not covered on the warranty. However brake hubs don't fail.

They will paint em with the Folia Tech stuff for free and they made a damn good job of mine also. Just be reasonable with them.

Why would painting them make them fail, as that is what their disclaimer is hinting at !!

Sorry, wasn't meaning to Dave, just a bit bemused as to why !!

Might as well do it yourself, probably be a lot less hassle, driving to gargage, wondering if they are going to do a decent job, etc etc ......

I took your comments on board, decided not to go to the dealers as this involves a 60 mile round trip plus the hassle of having to haggle with the service team, the weather was kind yesterday so I lightly sanded then painted the hubs with smooth hammerite and it looks fine, very smart in fact. Application was easy and I took the lazy approach at Married blondes suggestion, bought cheap brushes then just binned em after use. I can now look at my wheels with pride, sad I know /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I used the Audi supplied jack which I have to say is very good, one surprise when I removed the alloys, so much for german engineering - 'Made in Czech Republic' /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I popped into my local dealer (as its on the way home from work) and asked them about getting my hubs painted (as they are also getting rusty). Spoke to one of the Audi workshop guys and he said 'its perfectly normal for the hubs to go rusty. Theres no point in painting them as the paint will only wear off as the hubs heat up.'

Is he talking b0llo$ks?

I got the same response with a previous car (Leon Cupra) the car was only 2 months old and they wouldn't touch it, time will tell if the paint wears off but it's only a 15 minute job so I'll just do them again.
