I think you'll find it's the other way around. The road car comes first, the rally car is then based on it.

Was the Evo X the first Evo you'd been in? I'm guessing that it was, because like Paul said, the interior is a VAST improvement on the earlier cars. Seriously, no matter how plasticy you think the X is, it's pure luxury compared to the IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, or IX.

Besides, I don't think you can hold Mitsubishi accountable for the build quality in the Recaro factory. ;)

    RS3 = For the driver.
Evo X = For the balls.

    Enough said.

Despite what Ive read I still think the EVO will probably be more to run than the S3, but based on limited research I cant see it being that much more by comparison, certainly not a big enough jump to make it prohibitive.

Its a car that needs to be revved so hard driving is the mpg killer here, where as a mapped S3 is much more punch lower down and in the mid range so it `feels` fast without pushing hard and killing the mpg.

Apparently the whole EVO X range has been discounted by 5K and, and they take a big hit in the first year. Ive been offered a private car for 24K that was 32K at the showroom in March this year.
An S3 would hold its value much more than this and probably only lose a couple of grand in that time.

    cheers
    Paul

You know we are all assuming that all those images, are RS3, tbh they could be anything new in the pipeline, nothing to do with an RS3, even new running gear for next Gen A3 under that shell. I am starting to think gonna be no RS3

I don't buy that i'm afraid. Audi have never been regarded as a driver's car really.

Presumably you wouldn't be able to resist mapping the Evo as well, which will make the economy worse?

Personally, I think you should buy one, record all the running costs and mpg over a year/15k miles and then post them on here so I can decide whether or not to buy one next year

tku - out of interest, which other cars for the same money are you thinking of? I couldn't think of any when I was looking, only much older cars (e.g. M3) but not any that would keep up with an Evo on the twisty stuff.

    Thanks.

370Z on the straight though a little more money, sure they be a Subaru somewhere

I wouldn't personally call the Scooby "classy with a well made interior". And out of the 2, I'd have the Evo over a Scooby anyday.

370Z - interesting choice, but won't it suffer from the same Japanese interior affliction as the Evo and Scooby? Also, I'd rather be in an Evo on the twisty stuff as I'm pretty sure it would handle better than the Datsun:laugh: Plus the 0-60 of the 370Z is way off the Evo's. The GT-R however, would eat an Evo, but not quite in the same price or running costs territory!

As I've said elsewhere, it comes down to personal preferences. If you want a nice interior etc. you generally look at the German marques. If you want all round performance, you look at rice burners. Then you have the Audi S/RS models (in my case the S3) that appears to offer the best compromise for my needs.

If I only did 5k miles a year, I'd have bought a modded Evo, no question.

370Z 0-60 lists at 4.4 seconds, thought that was pretty reasonable

Unfortunately mate a remap is out of the question, hence the reason for looking at the FQ330 rather than 300.
Apparently `invisible` maps arent possible with the EVO X so if you map it then you have no warranty.

    Cheers

    Spot on.
Assuming any comparable car is a similar age then there is NOTHING, believe me Ive looked.

If Im spending 25K on a car I want at least a couple of years motoring withgout bills and therefore warranty is essential for me.

Otherwise I would pay 15K for the absolute best Masser 3200GT and spend everyday shitting myself over the next bill!

    cheers

The Datsun has no back seats and is more money.
The SUBARU is bloody awful inside even compared to an EVO.
The 330s is the FQ330s opposite number and is a lot more money than the Sti.

Have considerd the Subaru 330s but the EVO X tick more boxes for me.

    Agree, hence my dilemna.
Its hard to find an alrounder as good as a mildy tuned S3 unless you spend a LOT more money.

I'm surprised that this thread has run to 3 pages and nobody has yet mentioned them, especially Paul! ;)

But yes, for this price bracket, it would certainly be in my top 3 choices, but then my priorities don't require back seats etc, so not the same for everybody.

    He he.
No ASN thread is complete without an S3 v Cayman reference.
    3 pages is a record !

So if the Boxter is a poor mans 911, then is the Cayman (with its roof) the ugly mans Boxter?

    Discuss.

I'd say that the Cayman would be the purists 911....??

I'd have had a Cayman, rather than the Boxster if it had been available at the time, would prefer a proper roof on a car, and yes, I am the elephant man!

Nope, I have also been told, by an Audi Garage it aint gonna happen, I said about but some Audi garages have taken deposits, he said yeah we would, but we all give it back when it does not happen. and quoted me some instance on another model they took a deposit and it did not happen, they gave it back to the Customer, though Audi Garages get told last :p of any new models I am sure

I just hope it happens. Will be interesting to see what Audi can pull out the bag. I dont see a reason for them not to make it. The amount of models they have started to make now over 5 years ago there flooding the market!

I am thinking of selling my S3 in anticipation of an RS3. However I have the option at the moment to buy a used 2008 Cayman S Gen 1 in Black with 2000 miles on the clock wth black 19" rims.

I will lose things like Xenons and bucket seats and iPOD. As the porsche doesn't have these on, I know its GEN 1 aswell with no LED lights etc....

Would this be a step backwards or a leap forwards I don't know, I may swap for an RS3 when they come out but what are peoples opinions.

Do it, its meant to be one of the best handling cars out there, i nearly bought one myself but in the end i went practical and got a TTS instead as it had a bigger boot.

Well if your just basing my choice of cars available for £30k+ on the twisty stuff then I might as well end my argument there as an Evo imo would be perfect if that was all I did..drive on 'twisty stuffs' constantly..but I don't so if your wondering out of curiosity what I would buy instead..well for what my 2p is worth then to buy a similar car to the evo i.e. saloon I would actually buy either a b7 RS4 or a M3 saloon V8 version...through the twistys it wouldnt match the evo but show me a dual carriageway and I'm sure they would hold their own. However and this is once again just my opinion, I think these cars would bring not just power but a much better built car..more class and better residuals whilst also being a good daily driver without being tiresome to drive.

Great car and without jumping onto the usual ASN argument regarding the cayman..an excellent drivers car and classy. They look good as well with the sport design wheels.

Depends what you want really, as far as S3s go you pretty much have the best you can get. But maybe now, while the 8P lifecycle still has some legs, you might acheive a decent price for it.

Having not driven one, and purely based on opinions and reviews, the Cayman sounds like the more driver focused, more `fun` choice if you dont need 4 seats.

    Good luck

I would prefer the RS4 or M3 too, great cars.
But a lightly used, warrented M3 is 50K and RS4s were discontinued a couple of years.

And unfortunalety both are even more to run than an EVO X too as far as mpg and servicing are concerned and thats before any repairs.

    Cheers

I'd give it a go, the opportunity to pick up a car like that with such low mileage doesn't come along often. I'd say if you can get it for a good price then you can sell it in a year if the RS3 does make an appearance, or you get bored of it and shouldn't really lose much if any money on the car.

If not then let me know who's selling as I might be interested!!
