so where does the RS4 fit then when that is released?
I di not think about the RS4 lol ok so maybe that is 55k and the quattro 60k which is used R8 money
Where on earth do people get there figures from, an RS5 is 59k.
I'd say an RS4 would be less than or equal money to an RS5, certainly not more than would it?
I would bet the RS4 will be within a few quid of the M3, whatever that is.
Its a RWD sporty version of the 3 series that BMW make
So, what's with the new RS3 SB having larger width tyres on the front than the rear (235 v 225)? Maybe because it does tootles about in front wheel drive most of the time! (Awaits Haldex berating... ) Or, redesign of rear arches too costly? But then, 10mm isn't much!
And starting at £39,900 for SB and DCT only, if anyone has seen Evo email today. Just too expensive for an A3. Sorry.
Just out of curiosity so many people are mentioning (across forums) that the wider front tyre profile is a compromise /issue etc.
Can anyone qualify (with factual evidence) why this is an issue. Does it really matter? Based on the mule photos that were launched with the car being tested at the Ring the car was running with different front and rear wheels (styles), so they must have done the research and felt it was worth it.
Hard to say why but I'm sure they must have their reasons. Maybe balance car better ie oversteer v understeer?
I personally think it was the quickest easiest cheapest solution, to giving the front more traction, as the balance of power to the front and rear is different to an S3, and the back will be pushing more, and as above said, over/under steer balance, As I have said earlier I don't think they were really ready to launch it this early in 2011, but they want it to be available before or same time as the BMW M1.
I emailed audi about a 3 door manual RS3 and the quattro concept and here is the reply
The RS3 with be Sportback bodystyle with DSG only I am afraid.
The quattro is officially still a concept, so specifics on its
specification if it were to be built are still unknown.

When is the RS3 being road tested?
EVO will hate it because its an AUDI, and its not rwd, and probably not a hardcore track tool.
Wonder what everyone thinks of it?
TBH, my wishes for the car were:
LED rear lights akin to the Sportback
interior LEDs eg aircon, light switch etc to match cluster ie white
Okay, I have a little insider info but nothing to get wet over.
The Audi website has more info than before
Colours are White Black Red and two shades of grey, no sprint blue .
RNS-E, Bluetooth, AMI, Reverse sensors standard.
Weight is 1500-1600 Kg so much the same as before, 4 pot brakes (no Carbon Ceramic discs thank god)
19 inch wheels that have an optional black with red rim colouring.
Upgraded RS suspension.
Flared wheel arches and wider stance
and some other stuff.
I've placed my deposit....
The different wheels pictured above are because I suspect they have wider front tyres than rear ones presumably this is to deal with the S3s tendency to understeer, a welcome change.
All of that was out originally wasn't it??
Probably, I don't think I read enough of the thread, I got emailed something I "wasn't supposed to see" and it is effectively what's already been said here with some promo images.
I do know that I was the 8th person at my dealership to place a deposit, which means that the delivery slots on these cars will be gone very soon indeed.
I guess the public opinion on the RS3 must be really bad then.
But nice of you to drop by all the same Mr Hicks.
I'm sure it will sell well enough just because its an RS model even if its just average for what it is. It will be interesting to know how it handles compared to the S3.
Can't believe you bought that stuff regarding 8th deposit etc...The amount of times I've heard stuff like that when buying a car..Anyways, I am actually now contemplating the 1M instead..seems to me like bmw has actually put some thought into what their enthusiasts actually want and at least tried to make it a reality...flared arches front and rear...m3 brakes, rear diff and suspension..csl wheels. This RS3 just seems so.....well put together in a rush.
TBH, there is a very good chance that the 1M will be a better drivers car than the RS3 but IMHO its damn ugly and the interior of the 1 series last I looked was shocking cheap.
Its a pretty simple solution to counter understeer, and doesn't have any compromised on a nose heavy 4wd car. Most powerful RWDs run a rear biased staggered set-up this is just the reverse, albiet only a small staggered set up.
Also it allow them to fit 19s with out rubbing.
Apparently when the Quattro Sport concept becomes a reality it will be even lighter then the concept at 1300 kgs or just under, with that amount of CF in the chassis/ body and only limited numbers can't see it being anywhere near as low as £60K.
Think it'll be more like 80K tbh.
Have to agree with this, possibly (given they have to shed 300kg's from RS5), and use exotic materials it could even come close to 6 figures at low volumes (due to high tooling cost at low volume).
Should it get the green light, it could be on the market in as little as two years from sign-off. Executives at Quattro GmbH (Audi’s performance subsidiary) are determined that they would build the car, that it must be exclusive, built in limited numbers (think hundreds rather than thousands), and match the weight of the concept. So, expect some exotic materials in the body.
The Quattro heritage is an interesting element of the Quattro Concept’s arrival, but what it says about Audi’s future is the real clincher. A short, fast car with a 60 per cent power bias to the rear, that’s 300kg lighter than an R8? That’s why I’d love Audi to build this car. And if it does, I can’t help thinking it’d be a belter.
Love that word 'BELTER'
The RS3 is certainly going to be rare beast, spoke to my local dealer yesterday and they are only being allocated 3, so I would suggest that anyone who is interested moves quickly
With all this talk of being limited numbers, is there going to be a RHD model?
I would hope so, it's been announced on the Audi Uk website.
Well its in this months TopGear mag and looks like this.
Not sure about the rear spoiler.
I'm am sorely disappointed in the RS3. Standard BE wheels, ok, 19" here, gloss black diffuser, wow, upgraded plastic. Same pipes, no "standard guise" RS twin ovals. And this sad frown looking front end, what is going on. Apparently the likes of the RS5 look great in real life, but the front ends of these cars with the silver piping, it's horrific. Has someone at Audi hired a rocket from Max Power to style these things? What's the spoiler all about and the wheels, in red, honestly? Personally, I think they've made a mess of the buckets as well. Steering wheel looks ok.
Performance will no doubt be a hoot, that engine is great. Let's hope the handling is good too. Should make for a rapid car. Will have to be so that you can get the embarrassing thing out of people's sight, quickly.
Poor show Audi. Let's hope they use this as an end of run money making exercise selling off all the old 8P parts and focus on making the next A/S/RS3 a looker as well as a performer.
An S4 is about the only Audi I would look at right now. I've also read that the forthcoming RS4 on the current platform will be in Avant guise also.
I think I must be coming down with something, as I'm increasingly feeling that I need to look elsewhere for my next car.
Nail on the Head!!
i was one of the people who was very excited about this car "as i knew it was coming (sorry just had to add that in!!!)" i know this thread has been going for a couple weeks now but ive not even taken the time to post as i actually dont feel it deserves it... so dissapointed to see no manual gearbox! i mean i can handle the sportback part although id prefer a 3dr... there is absolutely nothing about this car that jumps out as RS apart from the TTRS wheel... BIG FAIL TBH
a 1 series M seems to be the much better option afaic.. allbeit id be f*cked in this weather but at least id be able to choose what bloody gear i want to be in when i want!
In a few words, I think that Audi managed to disappoint even the few people that were actually waiting for it.
Well Audi have a lot of deposits, and people that do want to buy for sure
1) Why didn't they stick a set of these pipes on!
2) Why does the RS1 look soooo much nicer, and I'm a 4dr fan!
Only a chop but I LOVE that
Interesting that the dealer who have had a deposit from me for over 5 years hasn't bothered getting in touch. Nice of them to remember me. Thanks Camberley Audi.
Going to go and see Wednesday them to get my dosh back. I'm going to live with my 8L for a few more years...
Dont forget to ask them for the interest aswell.
Question, and this isn't a pop Jason, just a genuinely interested enquiry.
I like Audi's; quite a lot in fact. So much so I placed an order for a new S3 back in 2006 ahead of the car being available in the UK to test drive. It's something I'd never do again as you can never guarantee that a car will live up to it's hype (the OEM S3 didn't in my eyes), and I've continued to live with it thanks to some decent aftermarket tuning packages.
So the killer question, why put down a deposit on something unless it is guaranteed to be a limited edition (e.g. run of 50). It means Audi have the benefit of your money, make interest on it for years, when it could be working harder for you. There may be some I'm missing here, but given Audi franchise dealers recent form, the way they manage their paperwork, and the risk of franchise dealers going bust in the recession, I wouldn't give them the steam off my pi$$ until I was certain I was going to get something in return.
I hope sincerely (as the staff have probably mostly changed), that when some bloke (e.g you) wanders into the dealers demanding a deposit back from 5 years ago that they manage to sort it out for you mate.
it's a nice chop ay N8, maybe Audi will get their act together with that one, potential to be a major seller if it looks remotely like that!
No worries. My deposit of £500 went down on 13th January 2005. I quote from the letter I have:
'... Thank you for your advance order for the Audi RS3...'
'... Please take this letter as further confirmation of your order...'
'... Price and Spec TBC...'
'... Deposit refundable subject to above...'
That was originally with Whites (Camberley) who have since sold the franchise to Basingstoke Audi / Martins of Basingstoke. At the time of the sale I had written confirmation that all deposits would be transferred and honoured by the renamed Camberley Audi.
I appreciate a garage has had £500 for nearly 6 years - so I've lost say £100 in interest in that time. However I was happy taking the loss on the basis that the RS3 may have been a limited edition run and in which case I thought I was guaranteeing at least a chance to be amongst the first to have the option to buy the car. That has all turned to nothing given the fact that they've probably already taken a load of firm orders so my 6 years has pretty much counted for nothing I guess.
Unfortunately I can't make it to the garage until Wednesday but definitely something I want to sort out face to face. I've not moved house since the deposit, I've not changed my email address, home or mobile phone numbers, so all details they have for me are still current - so why nothing from them - unless they've simply lost my details or are incompetent.
I'm in the mood for some fun so may string them along to demand my rightful place in the queue and see what they say....
So to sum up, it was always a gamble, I knew I'd lose interest on the money, but it was worth it to have first dibs on something that might just have been special.
Warren I placed a 1k deposit not that long ago, when it was official unofficially, I paced it in case of limited numbers really, and if I really wanted one, to get in first, my deposit, is fully refundable what ever I do, and tbh, you make such a small amount on £1k interest, (unless you gamble on the highest ever risk shares and win) it does not bother me to much.
I am not sure if I will or not yet order, I need some ?'s answered first, There is parts I love about the RS3, and parts that ask if it is worth it?
As Jcs356 says it is a gamble, for him though he claims to lose £100-00 interest more like £40, at today's climate
I just know for my style of driving, what I want, once it is remaped, it will be an awesome car, but as others state, it is dated, I am annoyed they have not added some little things to make it apart from an 8P, like ignition key etc. and what other options are there? if my S3 was a year or so older almost certainly gone for it. though tbh I do quite like the S4 as well, but that is more money with the added options I need.
Phew, good news you have all the details, I'd have lost it all in 5 years!
As much as I'd love to go and bung a few quid down I just can't bring myself to do it until I've driven it. If it measures up then fair do's. If they were numbered with a plaque like the Civic's I'd be inclined to throw my hat in earlier, but they never seem to go to these lengths!
Best of luck sorting it mate.
