Im no fan of DSG either, i drove a few cars with it fitted, MK5 Golf R32, Audi TT 3.2 V6, Audi R8 and lastly a new Audi RS5 the dealer had in brand new 2 weeks ago. Give me a manual any day of the week, i know all the pro`s as quicker to change etc but i prefer the interaction and its easier to park up in tight spaces and bump over kerbs.

Also it needs to be a 3 door aswell or one made available as they loook miles better as i dont need the practical aspect of 5 doors

To be fair (sorry Ron) I have also heard that, and not one of them came out of the factory with anywhere like the power Audi claimed. But then, it's also claimed it's the last real RS Audi had made before going soft. Go figure!

And it looks really dated IMO, the new model hasnt been kind to the old.
The local dealer has a couple sitting around at 35K!!
In its day I loved them and sorely wanted one. Now it looks old hat and doesn interest me one bit. Would much rather have an M3.

Of course the 8P is getting on a bit but it is still current (with the last facelift being very subtle) so hides its age pretty well.

    cheers

I do agree, but then I must say, I would still love an RS4 and would certainly take one over this new excuse for an RS3.

Ron's making a good choice, perfect family car if you're not man enough for an RS6 ;)

I got my email this morning off my local audi dealer, they want a 1500 pounds deposit and below are a few extracts off the email.

The RS 3 will be available to order in the week beginning 13 December, priced from £39,900 on the road and first UK customer deliveries are expected in April 2011. The official unveiling will be at the Geneva motor show in March 2011.

Design highlights are: quattro all-wheel drive, 19-inch alloy wheels, flared lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic front wheel arches, widened track, sport button controlling throttle response and exhaust note

Im still not totally convinced by it all.

What are you totally not convinced by?

Hmm M3 Different car, for different reasons, I could have bought one, still choose the S3 over it, but different people buy cars for different reasons.

RS4 is a PERFECT all round car, solid build, nice looks, handling, interior etc etc, its just the performance let the whole thing down IMO.

Carbon arches, damn they wont be cheap then.

RS4 avant is stunning car, but many have reported power is not what they expected at all & I believe them.

Why would you choose an S3 over an M3? I assume you're talking about an E90?

Im not convinced by the DSG and 5 door, if it had been a 3 dr and manual i would of been down my dealer today with a deposit now im thinking of the TTRS or another hot hatch of some discription.

Hate to say it. But I told you so! haha.

Ok, back to a serious note. Few things that I am definitely dissapointed in are that the rear arches havent been flared! And the wheels are just common. However things like the exhausts, which I have heard from another forum was due to the twin oval tips on each side being difficult to put on the 8p actually reminds of the old rs4 avant, rs2..those buckets whether it is wag or vag do look amazing. And for once you get a decent amount of kit. I actually like it! And I think in the flesh they will look good.

    Just a shame I haven't got £45k+.

Any M3 really, it is not that I dont like the M3, they are stunning cars in every aspect, But when I bought my S3 I looked at a few cars, and have always looked at 3 series, even the 1 Series m when looking around (not the new one not released yet).

Main reasons, Mostly Size, and 4 wheel drive., Understated, then running costs, then buying cost though that was not really a determining factor. I love the size of the A3, always have loved small hatchbacks. (I am told there is a 3 series 4 wheel drive BMW make for the US, maybe Canada) I got to admit I have never driven an M3, though been in an older ones. a few friends have them and an old M5.
I find a DSG S3 quite relaxing to, so easy to just drive on a grind. and all my quirks I hate with the S3 I think are covered by the RS3
I got to admit as well, although many slate the feel and drive of an S3, again once it is chipped I love it I find the steering really responsive not too light, as for handling again love the 4wd ability to come out of a corner earlier. I love the security of the drive.
When I drove around NBR, with 2 mate both M3 owners, one a CSL both thought DSG was fantastic, and the way you can come out of a corner earlier, the CSL owner has driven a 52 plate M3 around NBR in 8' 33 secs and again he was more than impressed that I could easily hold off a CSL and out accelerate it from a corner, he said for a stock car bar stage 1, it would go around NBR very fast, and these guys are BMW die hards, but all of that is unimportant for me, I am not a racing driver.

It is just a car for me that ticks more boxes for everyday driving.

Not sure I agree about M3 being ' a stunning car in every respect'.... They are BMW, common as muck, rarely have indicators and the modern interior is naff. BMW RS5 every time.

Thats all fair I suppose. I chose the S3 over the BMW for many of your reasons, and now i'm feeling a bit deflated I feel like I need to scratch the itch, so i'm going to have to move over to the dark side to find out of the hype is true about these M3s.

The reason I asked was just incase I had missed some important factor you'd considered that I hadn't!!

Perhaps unlike you I crave a car again that has a bit more driver involvement, i'm hoping the M3 will do that. If not then i'll just build a go-kart and be done with it!

I hope it does for you, It certainly will be a very very different drive from an S3, I did miss one other main reason, it is Turbo, I love turbo engine cars, they are so sedate when you want them to be, and just raw power when you want, and the S3 mapped it certainly is that. I would not dismiss an RS3 form a drive point of view so quick, I think it will be very different from an S3 stock, due to the up to 50-50% front rear differential (though these figures seem to be differing in places) and with the possibility of 410 BHP on a stage one, that for me is quite a combination in 4wd form. Another thing I am impressed with is stock S3 brakes etc. are pretty good, where as M3's due to weight do need upgrading in stock form for track work.

    Again wish you luck

BMW M1 out soon, though sure that will be a drivers car, if that was available when I bought the S3, I might not own an S3, it would be a really tough call on that one for me

My comment regarding the BMW was `E90 v RS4` in the present day as a used buy. Where I would prefer the M3 over the old looking RS4.
If AUDI had given us an RS4 based on the lastest A4 then I would suspect the RS4 would be my preference assuming it was a chip off the old block of course.

When the RS4 was new and more current, I much preferred the RS4 over the M3.

So, whats happening with this RS3 then?
And has Nige sorted that feckin mirror out?

    Are caymans any good?
    Are Boxters poor mans 911?

    And...are AUDIs just posh Skodas?

    cheers

According to the RS6.com post, the RS3 will comes with wider front wheels than the back.... That can't be right surely??? The BMW's I had in the past had wider rear wheels like a F1 car

Oh and it's on the UK Audi site now www.audi.co.uk

The RS3 is still a hoax, Nige made it all up so that we'd ignore the fact that he's out there ripping people off and not sending their wing mirrors to people, in an attempt to earn a small fortune ripping off members of ASN, he then plans to spend the money on a Cayman, because he knows that he's too ugly for a Boxster and the 911 is just a family car for men who haven't grown up but need to get the kids in the back. The only time I get in a Skoda I have to pay for the privilege, how bizarre. I've got a friend coming over on Christmas day, it's also his birthday, I might dress up as a Roman...

i'm really looking forward to it and can't wait to have a drive in one, it hugely reminds me of the B7 RS4. I like the fact its a sportback & its also a DSG which i have been thinking my next purchase was going to be an auto - BMW or AUDI so this is a plus for me. Another factor in this is i really miss the soul my R32 had; purely the engine of course and never mind what other folks opinion had of driver dymanics etc (i'm no racing pilot btw) it had a real soul about it and my S3 doesn't. In that statement I'm not saying the S3 is a bad car in anyway, seriously - its very quick has a great 4 wheel drive system, economical and doesn't cost a great deal to run.

Back to the soul part for a second, a 5 cylinder, turbocharged thrum has to be the missing element to the S3. I'm not that interested in the next model coming out soon or whatever and maybe i conform to some of the stereotypical Audi corporate ***** & target market tosh but this thing really looks like it ticks some of the boxes for me & i really can see myself in one, maybe not straight away as even though i can afford a 40K car i simply cannot get my head around paying that much for a medium size hatchback, maybe a Jag size car but no hatchback so the used option would be my attack.

As a second hand option then definatley a yes; i feel i can now only truely afford my car - its paid for and i can pay for anything it needs without it killing me so i figure the RS3 won't be that much of a step up costs wise, if i save for a year to cover the cost difference between what my car is worth and buying a used RS3 in a years time.
