3 door has a longer wheel base based on total length of vehicle. This would surely mean it would handle better than th SB.

I could well be easily confused though :)

Confused as to why i'm confused though. SB is 73mm longer but the wheelbase is only 35mm longer, would that not mean that the 3 door wheels are closer to the corners of the car thus improving handling.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

It would be nice, but Audi seem pretty into the 5 door thing right now,and it certainly put me off the RS3 8P.

That in itself is good news,as the 8P did need a lot doing to it to make it behave and perform as you might have expected.

It was a classic case of a great engine in need of more power and a better chassis.

    A vehicle's dynamics is a function of:
    -wheelbase
    -CG height
    -mass
    -mass distribution
    -track

The effect of a longer wheelbase on longitudinal acceleration is analogous to having a wider track during lateral acceleration. All inertial forces act through a vehicle’s centre of gravity, so having a larger distance between the axles or inner and outer wheels has the same effect as lowering the CG: reduced load transfer. Reducing load transfer will result in more balanced tractive forces at each tyre. This is a good thing because when a tyre is overloaded, it will slip too much and eventually lose grip and skid. And if underloaded, the normal force may go to zero and the tyre does nothing.

However, track width and wheelbase length are a compromise between dynamics (geometry and inertia) and packaging. These parameters are fundamental to all further design areas such as suspension geometry, wheel rates, damping rates, traction control, brake system, gearing, powerband etc… Therefore these parameters are established very early on in the development process.

    Pilot,

Not really sure how that helps the point you are making. 3 door weighs less and has a larger wheelbase based on the overall dimensions of the vehicle. A larger portion of the SB is outwith the wheelbase so therefore acts against the CoG.

I think i'll stop now though as my brain hurts :)

    Si.

I'm with you on that one, well sort of. Previous s3 I would say the 3 door every time looks wise, but there's something about the latest sportback that just makes it that bit better looking than the 3 door IMO anyway, but don't get me wrong, the 3 door still looks pretty good.

Oh yeah the 3dr is pretty good but the sb is just so much nicer, but then I prefer the rs4 estates and rs6 estates to their saloon counterparts, maybe it's the whole thought of been able to carry 5 up and have a boot full and still be able to whoop most cars arses

The 3-door looks like a hatchback, the sportback looks like an estate car. If you had to have a practical 5-door car for family, work or other practicality reasons, surely the A4/S4/RS4 Avant would fulfil you needs better? Granted it's a more expensive vehicle which I can only assume is the reason why the A3/S3 sportback is so popular.

An s4 is much more cost in all respects than an s3 SB.

Car purchase, mpg, insurance, tyres etc.

I also have to park in city car parks a bit with my job and I for one will appreciate the slightly smaller dimensions of the s3 vs s4.

Plus, with a new s4 now I'd always be thinking I haven't got the big daddy rs4, making me depressed every time id drive it!

    See below official figures for:

    8P RS3 Sportback

    8V S3 Sportback

So yeh, official figures show the old RS3 is 0.2secs faster to 60mph that the new S3, even if it is 205Kg heavier!

8P 5dr was better looking IMO (I had one).

8V 3dr and 5dr pretty evenly matched, so comes down to what you need (gone for 3dr this time).

Agreed. Also it cant be too much more than the A45 as that's its direct competition

it isn't, I looked at one and the rs4 - rs4 had a big dealer contribution of £7K if done via finance but it was the eyewatering cost of the options like ceramic brakes that put me off, plus the sheer size of it.

The s4 will cost more as it will depreciate like a sieve whereas the s3 sportback is the 3rd best car for lowest depreciation - only beaten by the Range Rover Sport and Porsche Boxter or Cayman

Audi are smarter than that, they will sell it as 40-45 and hurt you even more with the options. Thats what they do, and they do it so well there is a 3 month wait for the S3. It will all be hypothetical for me if you can stick a roof box on a TTRS 2016 version, lots of if buts and maybees

I'm just gonna wait and see what happens I'm saving up at the mo for a deposit so when I'm at the point of ordering I will decide then what I'm having if the s3 and rs3 can't have a tow bar fitted at all I will be going for the 184q instead

How can something that never had a release date in the first place be delayed?

RS models always take a while, in some cases coming out just before the model is discontinued, I hope that's not the case here.

I cant see Audi doing the same as the last RS3 the demand is just to high for them to wait around, look how quick the new golf R has come out after the GTI.

I really hope it is this year but only time will tell.
