I'm not sure how much a front wheel drive 1.8T A3 weighs, but I'm assuming its lighter than an S3, plus it wont have the transmission losses the S3 has. So...and this might be common knowledge on here, a remapped 1.8T running 190ish bhp cant be far off the performance of a standard S3? Or even pretty equal?

    Or am I talking *****?

Your not talking *****...I had ago against an S3 from where I work when I had my A3 and it was neck n neck, mine was only the Ko3 turbo and not the Ko3s as well, a well remapped Ko3s would in my opinion beat a standard S3...

A well sorted K03s'd A3, will be Pretty equal with a remapped S3.

depends how you mean, the ko3s wasnt near the best 1/4 mile times being knocked out at santa pod by remappped S3's, almost 0.5 - 1 sec out.... and that was for yours Jay which i understood as being pretty much as good as your gonna get?

i think if you look at standard 0-60mph's and take all that into consideration.... your not gonna knock 2 secs off the A3 with a simple remap..... it doesnt equate, the standard a3 supposed to do 0-60 in 8.2secs, S3 is 6.6ish..... somethings not right if the S3 loses IMO

ive owned both bear in mind, albeit not a remapped A3

Yeah mine was well off @ santa pod, Only got 1 run though and that was my first ever run down a strip.

I still think an S3 would have the edge down the strip due to traction etc.

On a private road though there really is nothing in it.

from a standing start the s3 will always be quicker but from 2nd gear onwards there prob wont be much in it.

yup i agree in a sense, although still think the S3 should edge it especially going towards the higher figures.... dont forget the S3 has twin inters at the side of the A3's sinngle unit...loads to consider still but i still think the S3 should edge it.....gear ratios are closer etc etc

I was purely talking about a remapped FWD 1.8T versus a standard S3. A3_Turbo, you seem to be referring to a well modded A3 versus an S3 with a remap. An S3 with a list of mods comparable to your car, would be noticeably quicker than yours in my opinion.

back on topic then..... i still think the remapped A3 would still be short, not by much but nevertheless..... i stand by what i said with the 0-60's, altho only an indicator...... the extra 2seconds cannot be put down to quattro alone

When i say a well sorted A3 i meant FMIC, Stage 2 map and K03S will produce more torque than a mapped S3, will be roughly 15 bhp down but it makes that up from no transmission losses and a lighter body.

Dont wanna start the whole A3 vs A3 thing but there really is not much in it.

I don't agree that a well sorted A3 would be equal to a remapped S3, sorry... I agree with animal that the S3 would edge it top end to... But the original post was A3 remapped Vs standard S3...the answer to this is they would be pretty much even...simples :)

I Think we need to get Prawn on here and meet a mapped S3 down a nice strech of private road :)

I guarantee the S3 owner would be a little suprised to say the least....

Meh. All turbo's are for ****'s.....

I've clearly been spending far too much time playing with the mini.....

top end means nothing really, and 0-60 means little too in the real world.....

When you're out and about, on a quiet day on some nice open roads, and you find some irresponsible youth who fancies a race, it's a well contested fact (although a fact none the less) that there's sodd all difference between a highly sorted ko3S'd A3 and a remapped (but otherwise standard) S3.

Of course an S3 with similar mods will be much quicker, it'll also cost more.

People seem to think we fight the A3 corner because we are foolish enough to think it's better. That's not the case.

We try and argue the case for the A3, because even now after the prices have dropped for S3's, £2k buys you a 1.8T A3, and £3k spent on it will make it MUCH quicker than the £5k S3 your money could have otherwise bought you..... Map that £5k S3 and it's still neck and neck in a straight line, although the S3 won't corner or stop half as well.

We've never tried to make out that the A3 is better than the S3, just simply that, for a low cost car that pulls, handles, and stops well, it shouldn't be dismissed.

    Turbo's are gay anyway.....

hey guys my opinion wasnt meant to belittle the A3..... i had loads of fun with my standard car hence why i kept it for so damn long..... im completely mindful of the 0-60's... that said though they are an indicator juist like every other fact and figure is recorded via memebers/manufacturers....

Depends on what performance scenario you have in mind.
0-60,30-100,30-70 for the diesel boys, top speed etc.

For me the main test for my straight line performance is 30-130,dont care about launching my car so 0-60 and top speed means jack.

it does....but id like to bet transmission losses on the quattro system are less whilst the car is in motion as the initial 'pull' has already passed.... this is a very wide debate here, i seem to recall Glen saying that midrange his S3 was better or equal than a lot of cars you'd expect to beat it (in different words), im all for both the A3/S3's..... but the difference isnt simply a remap, simple as that - i didnt buy this car for speed alone, that said it is still head and shoulders over what my standard A3 was.... but then i like the safe drive as opposed to racing and screaming around corners at 100mph, i love the security the car gives whilst still maintaining a decent degree of comfort

    I'll be around Timmy :)

Hopefully, by the end of the year the bastard car will be working properly too! Only boosting 18psi at the moment instead of the old 22 it used to, I think the 180k on the clock has taken it's toll on the original MAF and exhaust manifold (I'm now certain it's cracked)

If only I cared about it enough to fix it.....

80k on the current cambelt, and not enough cash to change it until June.... If it goes, it's just an excuse for a full rebuild and bigger turbo I guess.

ya see, young ones today....... ya obviously gonna sacrifice reliability when your running silly boost just to catch us, when ya back up and running and slowly edging your next S3 id pay to attention to his smug look while your holding your shaking steering wheel, clonking ya gear changes - tip, tuck your tracky bottoms into your socks and put ya back seats down, if you dont already:p:)

My friend has a FWD 1.8T Golf and hes done a fair bit to it like FMIC, Intake, Turbo back exhaust, Remap and DV. And my 225 S3 without a remap beats him in almost any gear and at any speed. I know it's not an A3 but its quite a simular situation.
I would go for the 1.8T A3 instead of the S3 but i just love the looks and comfort of the S3

I think you'll find your mapped S3 is probably running close to 20psi, if it isn't, there are going to be som:)e pretty dissapointing torque figures!

Last S3 I passed the guy looked decidedly pissed off actually, he came along side me looking all smug as if to say ''yo kid, I've got a proper Aud'' and very soon the smug look changed to angry frown. the poor bastard wasn't even remapped. I bet he felt silly.

It depends largely on what turbo the golf is running too, if it's an older ko3, no amount of maps or FMIC's will ever make it as quick as a BAM S3, as the turbo simply can't flow more than 200bhp, at all.

Couple that with the 100kg extra weight of the mk4 compared to the A3, and half the A3's advantage is gone.

Good point it is a T-reg. The main reason why its slower then it should be is that he did a postal remap :ermm: Fair enough it cost £99 pound but its not half the map a Revo or CC would be.

You should get together and put it to the test!:arco:

i bet he did... thing he is he deserved it but most that try are really just testing the water..... if you beat me and i didnt know who you were id just assume that you'd spent a lot of money on the car getting it to that spec... i wouldnt be bothered as i know a standard A3 wouldnt stand a chance, would i swap you? no i wouldnt as there loads of reasons to keep this, not just speed... if they taunt you id say go for it and good luck, but most circumsatnaces in my experiance arent that

regards to PSI..... im sure Glen was running less than 20psi? i know his was turned up higher than it was supposed to

This really is an S3 vs A3 thread now lol.

I personally think the A3 can be made to go just as quick as an S3, also stop better and handle better.

BUT i would still prefer to own an S3. Just nice to know if your an A3 owner chuck a few grand into it and you have 1 VERY capable car, that will embarass quite alot out there...

    Just my thoughts..
