as some of you might have seen, my turbo is sadly being replaced but what i am thinking is YAY time for a remap.

my car has 93,000 miles on it and it will have a brand spanking new turbo soon.

But should i let the new turbo settle before i go for a remap?

and is a car with 93k on the clock safe for a remap?

i will be getting the chipped uk st3 tuning box

SHALL I JUST DO IT? :scared2:

Why not get an uprated bigger turbo if your replacing it anyway, with an intercooler you'll get a lot more than the usual 30odd bhp from a remap.

i would but then i would need a new upgraded clutch to handle the extra power and my head gasket is being done at the same time so the cost cant really rise much more

Just do it, don`t worry about running in a turbo.

if you use a big turbo with standard clutch, you can get it mapped to have a flat torque curve - you will still get the higher top end power without the torque ripping mid-range torque spike - best of both worlds as it will drive more like a petrol turbo than a diesel turbo.

all you need is a turbotechnics hybrid/custom turbo (about 500-600 exchange) and custom remap (400-500) and you should be looking at 220-240hp.

you should consider a decat tube and better flow rear box to help the hybrid turbo spool up better but dont really need it.

my car needs a new turbo and i am also planning a remap very soon, so what you have said above is very very appealing, do you know of anywhere who could supply and fit the turbo? and also do the remap?

http://www.rstuning.co.uk/ have a good reputation up north or AwesomeGTI,APS,P-Torque. Lots of companies do this sort of thing now.

so the companies listed will be able to source the hybrid turbo and custom map my car so i can still use the standard clutch? i have £1000max to spend, so based on dunk's figures i should be able to get this done?

As long as your turbo is in good condition anyone can send it off to Turbo Dynamics to make a hybrid unit out of it. I have never had this done myself but read quotes of about £600 to get the work done. Custom remaps are about £500 then you have labour to remove then fit the turbo plus the gaskets/oil etc that are needed. To get the best from the turbo you would also need a panel filter fitted and a free flow back box of some sort. Your stock clutch might stay working for sometime but it will soon burn out and an uprated clutch will need to be fitted at about £600-£700.

    more info:

my local fitter charged £180 for the turbo swap

if you get the custom remap to limit the torque then you may not need a new clutch - you can always remap later for the full monty mid-range torque once you upgrade the clutch

buy an old turbo on ebay and get that reconditoned by turbodynamics - cost about £550-600 depending on condition, then you have got your car on the road whilst the turbo is being made, then resell your old turbo back on ebay

derv doctor did that for me - they bought the right turbo on ebay for the a3 pd140 then kept my old one - they keep this in stock to enable customers to do an exhange without being off the road for a week

derv doctor did my remap - cost about £420 and drives great, but its a tad smokey on kick-down in auto mode and probably needs a slight tweak sometime.

standard remaps and big turbos (i had the bluefin) cause limp mode due to underboost between 1500-1800 rpm cos the big turbo cant generate the very high requested by these remaps, however the factory map works absolutely perfect with the big turbo, so you can get the turbo done and fitted with the factory map (and air filter/exhaust if you want) then drive in for the remap to whoever you choose - no need for a 1-stop shop to do the whole job

That is a fantastic help, thank you very much, just a couple more questions if you dont mind.
What do i need to search for to find the right turbo to send off to turbodynamics? Shall i just keep my eye out on ebay? I understand its just the standard turbo that is fitted to my car already but does it have a model name or something? What do i actually tell turbodynamics to do to it?
I will as you said source a second hand one send it off, swap them over and then sell my old one..but im looking to do this asap really so need to get looking..
    Thanks again,
    Lance

unfortunatey i cant remember the part number i got but its the a3 8p or golf 2.0 pd140 turbo,

    afaik, audi oem part number is 03g 253 019a or 03g 253 014h, garret turbo part numbers 724930-0002 or 724930-0004 or 724930-0008
    http://www.turbomaster.info/eng/applications/passenger_cars/audi/

turbodynamics do a stage 1 upgrade and a stage 2 - go for the stage 2, they are about the same cost anyway but the stage 2 is designed to give max airflow at 1.8 bar and can run this to the redline without problems.

turnaround time is about a week, maybe less.

there are lots of gt1749v turbos, but the manifold is integrated into the turbo so you do need to get the audi/vw pd140 one for it to fit. - you could phone derv doctor and ask them for the part numbers on my original one that i left them

looking at that list its the '03g 253 019a' im after, out of interest where did you source yours from? i guess i will just have to keep my eye out on ebay..what kind of price should i be looking to pay for a second hand turbo? i assume it doesnt matter what condition it is in as it is being reconditioned?
