    Hi

I have a friend with a Subaru STI, he heat-wrapped his downpipe.
according to him this would allow the hot gases to flow out quicker as well as reduce temps in the engine bay.
is it worthwhile doing the same to my car?

Its a mission and you itch for hours, but every little bit helps - the idea is that it keeps the exhaust hotter, promoting flow and also prevents its from heating the engine bay, for best results you'd need a wrap, high temp coating and turbo jacket, but expect them to smoke like a git to start and then smell awful and if any oil gets on them to catch fire lol.

My skylines exhaust is wrapped all the way to the back box, i'd advise using expensive wrap for the manifold and downpipe, thhen on to the cheaper wrap for the rest

They hold onto the oil and smoke really badly, i've had a friend who had to use a fire extinguisher when at brands hatch and the only oil on it was from his oily hands when fitting the wrap, so i'm sure any leak of oil would extenuate the problem

I got my stuff from here...

    http://www.exhaustwrapshop.com/

I didn't get the turbo jacket in the end as mine is internally gated and the jacket would have fouled the wastegate/actuator..

Prob gonna get my hotside/mani/downpipe ceramic coated next time around I think :)

I considered ceramic coating for the skyline, but it worked out too expensive for me

yknow where the bulk head is and where the bonnet shuts, there is a rubber seal running from left to right.

remove that. ive found that makes a good difference to engine bay temps. having the undertray in place is good too

Why not do what the fiesta and saxo boys do and have some bonnet stay lifters lol

Why didn't I think of that? It's so obvious now. Combine it with a HUGE bonnet vent for extra sex appeal....

    Busted :(

I may of had a small Scooby vent on my redtop corsa - but that actually was for performance reasons. It helped the cold air flow in to the filters on the R1 carbs..... That way the extra weight of the fibreglass bodykit was accounted for....lol.

Hey, the past is only what directs you in to the future.... I realised the error of my ways. :)

Lol mate I've made some errrr 'misjudgments' shall we say, I once had a pepermint green mk2 astra that I put a calibra turbo engine in, I cringe at the thought of having driven round in it lol, but it was quick at the time -

But then again, i suppose if you strap a turbo to a turd, its still a turd, just a faster one

Indeed. I try and avoid fast turds. They splatter.

Does anyone know of an S3 with bonnet vents?
I'm not talking huge scooby scoop or plastic RS Turbo style add-ons, but properly custom done?

I think it might look alright if it's subtle, maybe 3 or 4 slats on the airbox side of the bonnet - nicely assymetrical?

    ///

    Like that.
That would have an effect, surely?

Louvres, that's the word I was looking for!

If done right it could look good and make a difference to performance I reckon.
But what do I know, i've got a stripey MG Midget!

When I had my old Renault 5 turbo I used to have to open the air vents and put the heating on full blast in the summer to keep the engine cool!!!

The key is knowing when to stop lol.

Boring fact of the day, My dad has got a 1957 MGA, he's chairman of the NOrth London MG Owners club - Now there's a group of potential child molesters if ever I saw one lol

Awwwww, this is making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside thinking about all the stupid things I had to do it the past to make cars work properly...

My mate had a Nova, and the only way you could switch the ignition on was to take the hazard switch out and turn it round, then put it back in and bump it. (A well known fact on the Nova - made them easy to steal).

I've investigated that one lol :) Wash my car quite often and aslong as the actual seal is on you should be fine, i've only cut the spongy bit so the turbo hasn't got niagara falls on it everytime it lashes it down lol

Did this last year, tested aswell, deosnt let any water in so all good.

It's amazing to see how much heat actually rises up from under the bonnet, also cut the front bumper up, well behind it anyway. haha.
