Hi guys, just got my car all ready for its mot this week as the car has sat in the garage since december. Only now when you turn out of juctions its almost as if the rear wheels are locked and you are almost dragging the wheels. this only happens when your turning left or right never in a straight line at low speeds. any ideas? the car never did that before it was laid up in the garage last year.

My golf did the same low speeds and reversing. Change haldex oil and filter this solved mine.

I'm conjuring an image and it just don't make sense. Are all your left and right turns taken at speed ? What happens if your at a standstill and turn left/right ? I would have thought by the time you reached any speed your car would be pointing straight by then ???
So it happens at tight roundabouts....sometimes I would guess ?
You have lots of reading on this forum - loadsa stories and quite a common issue with loadsa different fixes.

Put it up on axle stands this morning and put in 1st and let it run, turned the front wheels to full lock but you can simple stop the rear wheels with you foot one at a time as if the rear isnt locked. also tried a 3 point turn with the handbrake on a notch or two and it still did it? ive ordered haldex oil and a filter but its strange that this wasnt a problem when it went into the garge last year, now that it has sat for 6months that its a problem?

    Hey Kev, how's things?
So you got the gearbox sorted and this is how the car repays you?!
I'm sure i've heard of this problem being sorted with a Haldex oil & filter change, Haldex earthing strap, rear diff oil change etc... all pretty cheap fixes and probably wise to do anyway.
Good luck with it mate, it's about time the car was back on the road (but you're not getting your Billy's & H&Rs back)!

Thanks john, things are good, thats the car back on the road, had a change of heart and decided to keep the old girl. the amount of time and money i have now invested ive gotta keep it now! anyway i test drove an r32 yesterday up at lawerance of kemnay and to be honest it didnt do it for me at all, was a bit disapointed compared to the s3!
Think you changed your suspension just in the nick of time, my first test drive with the new gearbox one of the rear springs snapped! ive got eibach coilovers on now tho so all is good. hows your s3 going?

the front and rear diff are open diffs so you will be able to stop it with your foot. Maybe its a problem with the EDL at the rear?

sorry, EDL is electronic differential lock

it allows you to have differential lock despite having an open differential.

An open diff can only provide torque to both wheels equal to the level of traction that the wheel with the lowest traction has. So if your driving along with an open rear differential and your left rear wheel is lifted off the ground then your left rear wheel will spin like crazy but your rear right wont turn at all because its only getting the torque level equal to the traction level that your lifted left wheel has (i.e. none)

If you have EDL then the EDL system would apply the brake to this rear left wheel which increases the torque required to turn the wheel which would subsequently increase the torque applied to your rear right wheel.

Aww maan, sorry to hear about the rear spring! How are you finding the Eibach coilovers?
Mine's going better than ever, just got R32 rear ARB, poly dog-bone mount bush, new rear brakes, new N75 and yellow Forge DV spring fitted on Saturday. Just wanting to sort the cosmetics now...
Looking forward to seeing your car going about. Are you on EastsideVW.co.uk • Index page?

well went down to the garage this morning, tried the handbrake trick, made no differance, removed the all the fuses for abs and haldex, made no differance. did notice a tiny little leak on the diff where the drive shaft comes out but like i say really tiny! fingers crossed some fresh haldex oil and a filter will fix but im not holding my breath.

Not many 8L S3s on there, so get yourself signed up!

Good luck with the fix mate.

Never been changed since 2002 ? What year is your S3 ? How long have you had it ?
Did it not come with any kind of history/documentation ?
normally if the history states a 20K service (or whatever it is) then it should have been done. And if it's Audi who have stamped the book - you have some money to pick up

I read that the metallic filter is the original one and changed the haldex oil of my car (2000 APY with 156.000km). The filter changed was the metallic one.... Don't know if it is true.... But if it is in my case it isn't a good signal... :(

By the way, I had the problem in reverse with full steering locked, changed the haldex oil and for now it's solved...

Just a bit confused - so you have 5 stamps in your book by Audi. Can someone see what the official line is on frequency change of the haldex filter & oil. This also does depend if the service stamps in the book every 20K were not just simple long life oil changes !

    Hi Guys

I realise this is an old thread but I hope someone can shed some light on whats going on with my car. (2002 Audi S3 8L)

To get straight to the point, When ever im turning fairly tight at slow speeds (under 10mph), my back wheels are skidding, and its as if the back is bouncing round the corner a little...but its only the rear wheels and only the side im turning. I.e. if im turning right, the right hand rear wheel will lock..and vice-versa. The ESP light also flashed as this is happening and turning the ESP off does nothing.

Now it also boggs the engine down when this happens, and I cannot accelerate out of it, so I have to straighten the front wheels to nearly fully straight for it to stop and for the car to accelerate normally. I will also add that it does this in forward and reverse gears

Now ive had someone look at the wheels while I I turn out of my road, and it was completely the opposite to what I thought....the wheels are actually being spun faster then the car is moving...which is extremely strange...and is going to mess my tires up and god knows what else as I have to drive round tight corners daily...

Now as previously said, it does this in forward and reverse gears, and when I reverse, I can hear some strange noises coming from what I think is the four wheel drive system and its a kind of knocking/grinding noise (again only from the rear and only when the wheels are spinning)

Ive had it plugged into the computer at audi and no faults were detected....

Now I wonder if anyone could shed some light on this...as its really frustrating as I cannot work out whats happening
