Well i have had a slight noise coming from the rear for a while that slight you could hardly hear it.
So on Saturday i took it to the dealers.
It's that quite even they couldn't hear it at first.
Found that the noise is my rear shocks which they have said it was a common problem in the new shape A3 and informed me when the A3 came out the rear shocks they fitted to the cars were making this noise.

Audi have said they will replace the rear shocks to slightly modified ones.
Which they will do on Saturday.

The question is now with brand new rear shocks, is should i still get the Bilstein shocks when i have me car lowered.
Thinking of having them with Eibach sportline springs , after huming and haring over the Bilstien kit.

    What do you guys reckon????

go for it. The bilsteins will be much better suited to lowering.

Better still, take the old ones off immediately and ebay them. May even make a few quid towards your lowering project.

    What reg/year is your a3?

Mine is making a noise which the guy who raod tested mine at the last service said it was the diesel splashing around in the tank - mmmm bull sh!t. He rekoned that the 2005 (05) A3 8P's this problem has been fixed on. Kinda waiting for it to get worse, but I think that could be a long time.

Mines a 2004 shape and the noise was only very slight in fact you could hardly hear it.
Audi said the problem would not get worse.
As the shocks were fine but the shocks that were originally fitted just make that noise.
Only notticed when i didn't have my radio on.

Same here turn the music up and you can't hear it. I'm gonna mention it again to them and see what they say.

I'm utterly convinced I'm getting the 'ball in a plastic bottle' noise in my car,but it's so damned hard to tell over the very loud road roar generated by the 18inch tyres.

Strange thing is,I'm convinced it's coming from the front, not the rear.

Try and sit in rear of car and listen, hard to notice, but audi techy spotted it even when it was raining! Topman .. i just hate the so called "quality control" guy, hes a bit of a noob, and if u cant hear stuff like this then u shudnt be doing the job quite frankly. But fair play to this techhy sorting it out!

F1's on the front,Continentals on the back.

Road noise has been a problem with this car since I got it,so it's not the tyres themselves.

    It's just a noisy car,full stop.

Hi I am new here! I have an A3 2.0t quattro sport and recently it hads first service, anyway i was told that the rear shocks need replacing under the warranty. I have had no problems or noises and the car has only done 11k ... (yes only 11k for a 20k service) (£320) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Anyway is this shock thing a known problem and are dealers repacing them on all a3's when they come in for servicing :?

    Hi Mike, and welcome.

It is a known problem, but yours is the first case where I've heard of a dealer volunteering to change them without the owner even mentioning it, especially as there isn't a problrm /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/noidea.gif

    Which dealer out of interest?

Right,I'm now utterly convinced I'm getting the 'ball in a plastic bottle' sound coming from at least the right hand back corner of my car.

    Very very noticeable now.

Sounds worse on smooth surfaces, but seems to go away a bit if the shock is under load (cornering).

Is this what you're experiencing ?

I thought I had this the other day....turns out it was the weights on the end of the parcel shelf cords banging around. Might be worth testing with the parcel shelf out.

Dunno weather it would be worth asking Audi UK which model it would most likely to affect. and yes under corning i dont tend to notice it, mainly driving slowly as opposed to motorway driving, but then again u hear to much road noise to hear it anyways.

Had mine done yesterday - 04 pre grill model.

They also what to do the fronts - not complete replace but strip down and change of oil type. I said it ticked on full lock and they investigated.

New rear shocks work fab. Was in danger of sounding like a taxi!

Yes mine has now been done, the car is a 05 old Grill model. They let me use a A4 1.8 T quattro Avant for the day, a little slower than my A3 2.0t but quite nice all the same /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My dealer still insists that they fixed the problem before mine was made. What did you tell them the problem was?

Well i've got new shocks and there is a dramatic differance.
The ride is so much better now can't wait to get Bilsteins on.
And got a Sportback for the courtesy and not impressed with them.
I definately will not be buying one.
But as for the service of the Coventry dealer well they seem to be improving all the time and they were good from the start.

One of the guys there said i need the A3 sportline back spoiler on.
So i got a quote £310 fitted seems expensive,
£145 to buy it without ftting.

    HURRAH !
Finally,FINALLY...after months of telling me there was no noise,or it was the rear parcel shelf balls, the dealer has just this minute called me to tell me they will be fitting new shocks.

'Interestingly',and I use the word in it's broadest sense, the car (pending new shocks) has come back to me with the rubber balls that hold the parcel shelf covered in cloth.Seems they tried that 'mod' (10/10 on the 'bodge' scale) first, then realised it was the shocks after all.
