ok, wondering if anyone could shed any light, lately ive been noticing the car making much more of a wooshing sound at low revs, i suspect a boost leak....but when i floor it, the wooshing suddenly stops at about 2k rpm and the car livens up again, but i noticed today now in 3rd gear, the car bogs down quite badly and when i try to accelerate the car bogs down then suddenly takes off leaving a big black cloud of smoke behind it, is this just a boost leak? or something worse? if so any common problem areas it could be?

Is it a TDI?

Sounds like an EGR Valve failure. Take it out, located beside throttle body, clean it, replace seal and see if that cures it. If not, replace the EGR or even blank it off if you can??
