just speaking to my local tps and learned that fuchs makes the quantum oil now and not castrol.... learn something new every day!

doesnt help me answer what viscosity for my s6 though... 5/30 or 0/30.... specialists say 5/30 but castrol oil selector says 0/30

0W-30 is just the modern variation on 5W-30 designed for squeezing "micro-fractions" from MPG figures and for stop/start cars where cold, thicker oil could be repeatedly put under demand to circulate, from a start-up, around a cold engine.

Yep. Shell Helix 0w-30 AVL is the standard now.

would you still specify either for an older leggy car where a lower viscosity may give rise to leaks more than a higher viscosity oil

I have an older BMW interest/background and this happens all the time with oils. Manufacturers decide to use a newer oil and apply its use retrospectively and the online "oil finders" pick up on this. It doesn't mean that the previous oil (recommended in your handbook) will do any harm at all. I suspect that 0W-30 will be quite expensive so I'll be sticking to 5W-30 for my 2010 Audi with its simple cast iron engine block. :friendly wink: In my view, much more important to change regularly and keep it clean than to stick expensive stuff in and leave it for years. If I lived in Alaska I might be tempted to use a 0W-30 which might be a tiny bit more thinner when cold for the first 60 secs. :chuncky:

Correct about Fuchs but TPS / Quantum lubricants they still haven't updated the packaging on their website or featured it as news !

Old Castrol .

New Fuchs

0W is just lower viscosity when cold to get it around the engine quicker when you turn the key.

I think 5W is good for upto - 25°C cold starts anyway and 0W to - 30 .

Also it will have less viscosity drag as it's warming up , how much better cold flow and mpg in the real world !

If you are getting a 0W30 I'd get the Shell Helix ECT rather than AVL as ECT is also a C2 .

C3? Its not a 504 though?

Well spotted , 5W30 ECT is 504.00 507.00 , 0W30 ECT isn't , lol .

I would only use a 40 if i was constantly over 100 degrees or using a load of oil.

Even then you would have to select a 40 that was significantly thicker than a 30 instead of Quantum and Castrol negligible 1 Centistoke.

Means it will withstand heat better and lubricate better at high revs, so why would anyone pick 30 over 40

0 means it will lubricate best at low temperatures too so best at both ends of the spectrum.

I like the marketing best...
