    Hi

I have some problems with my 2009 Audi A3 2.0T S-Line Black Edition (Front wheel drive). 34k+ Miles (bought it with 26k). Any help/advice is appreciated.

    First video:

It happens in 1st or reverse. As soon as the car starts moving. Not all the time. As far as i can tell i can't hear this when it's raining. The noise gone as soon as i'm going a little faster. Can't hear it in any other gear.

    2nd video:

Can't really tell when. Sometimes i can hear it, sometimes i can't. As far as i can tell coming from the engine.

Went to audi in mid december to book my car for a service and they said they'll look in to these as well. Bought the car from Edinburgh Audi, last year (end may / early june). So still under warranty. Poole audi gave me an appointment for today so car is with them now.

    They just called:

They said they need to remove the gearbox (£400+ job) to find out what the problem is. They can't guarantee that this is a warranty job so they asked my "permission" to do this. It could be the clutch. £800 job and probably not covered by warranty.

Do you think they will say that this is the clutch just to cover their £400 charge to take out the gearbox even if the clutch is fine? Any idea what the problem is?

They also did some checks on my car and sent me a video with:

    Urgent - N/S/F tyre tread 3.0 MM - LOW - £141.68
Urgent - N/S/R tyre tread 6.0 MM (Bald inner edge - only 15 PSI - May have puncture) - £141.68
Advisory - Wheel Alignment Required N/S/F and N/S/R bald inner edge - £120

Do i have to mention that i bought the car with brand new tires?

Anyway, do you think these prices are ok? Do you think that i could get the same quality work for the tires and wheel alignment from an independent service for less?

All factory standard, nothing has changed.

    Thank you!

    Hi mate.

They should be checking for wear or damage to the suspension, bushes, links etc, before talking about new tyres & tracking - if you have to pay, take it elsewhere! you can get it 4 wheel laser aligned for around £80 inc. VAT. Decent tyres for that car can be had for around £120 per corner Inc. delivery ...or less

The engine noise (aside from it sounding noisier than any petrol engine I've ever heard - could be your phone Mic is extra sensitive) sounds more like a vacuum leak to me - but it could be a clutch\gearbox bearing or something.

...is the sound coming from the top of the engine bay, or the bottom near the bell housing (under the battery)? Answering that should give you a better idea of the repair costs.

Hopefully someone with more experience of the engine will be along to clarify for you.

Not sure on the rest but certainly rather than just replace tyres and fix the alignment there should be some investigation as to the root cause? otherwise you may find yourself 2 months down the line with similar problems...

BTW: at 36K I wouldn't have thought the clutch assembly would be chucking it in already either! unless it's been badly abused at every other opportunity. I've had manual clutches last well past 70'000 miles in all of my previous cars ...at least one took a proper :racer: hammering & two others were V6's.

That's a tfsi, sounds louder than our 2.0 tdi.

It kinda sounds like a vacuum valve noise to me, but hard to diagnose over web.

I'm curious if the noise going forward or back, when in neutral with engine on & of, is present.

Thank you for all your replies.

Artimus ... the sound is coming from the top of the engine.

Sayam ... they blame the back tyre "puncture". (they said .... "some sort of puncture") They not sure yet if i need a 4 wheel alignment or just a tracking. They'll call me again once the clutch is sorted.

NHN sorry, not sure which noise are you referring to? I assume it is the "beeping noise": if it is present, then it is there all the time. In neutral, forward, backward or even in 6th gear at 50mph. As soon as i turn the engine off, the noise is gone.

If the other noise: it's coming from the front of the car and only in 1st and reverse. Sometimes after a red light (downhill) i'm in neutral or 2nd gear and i never heard any noise.

    ------------------

Just a little update from audi. It is indeed the clutch. Luckily the flywheel damaged it somehow, so it is a warranty job and will be replaced free of charge. Both the flywheel and clutch need to be replaced.... £1200 job... They think both "noise problem" caused by the same thing, so once all replaced we will see if the sound from the engine area goes away too...

What a bonus that its a warranty job, news to your ears I bet! And as for pricing yes you can get just as good work carried out far cheaper than anything audi offer so long as a its a reputable garage like Bosch approved etc (of course you dont have to worry now its free)

I use an audi Bosch specialist and they use genuine parts and the labour is more than half what audi is.

Since you say the sound is coming from the top, I'd guess at a split\disconnected vacuum hose or faulty DV! but since they're under the bonnet, they'll probably look into that as well - FOC. :)

You'd hope that logic would be used, but sometimes dealers mate as you know, it isn't the case, they've got there teeth into the clutch now, until that's done I'm not confident they will look elsewhere atm, lets hope its the diagnosed fault :)
