I think it's because jesus hates me.....

Seriously though, I'm a little perplexed myself. Previously, I've been re-using bolts, things have been greasy from oil leaks, etc etc....

This time though, it was a brand new shaft, new suspension / wishbones compared to previously, new bolts all threadlocked and nordlock washered up, and this time, the joint itself has fallen apart on me.

There arn't THAT many people around running the combination of lots of power, LSD, AND sticky tyres though. many people have 2 of the 3, but very few people have all the above.

The people that I do know with the above, have similar issues it would seem :(

Best thing to do is to share all that power & torque between 4 wheels ;)

All joking aside though, what gearboxes and driveshafts do all the LCR boys use as theres a few of them running more power then you mate.

    Prawn,

Do you ever think you will go down the route of getting a bigger turbo? or would you stick to the ko4 or same size ish?

    Thanks Phill

It's torque that kills things rather than high BHP i was wondering do the 1.9 TDi's have the same cv joints ??

Pretty sure they're the same. Might be worth checking out though.

What are S3 inner CV's like? Tri-roller jobs or ball and cage? it might be worth looking into whether s3 CV'a share the same splines. I'm getting a bit bored of blowing driveshafts....

    S3 CV's are'nt tri-lobe

    surprised yours are..

even badgerwagen has caged cv's and its mk3 golf based car - ie ancient

check your plunge length on the inner cv.. see if its got any. if not that will kill them. Had that myself. More -ve camber the more "inward" the shaft goes twds the box

    Cheers Bill.

Originally, on the 100mm flanges, it was caged CV's, but I was killing these on a very regular basis, so when I changed the box at the start of this year I 'upgraded' (or so I thought) to the later type 108mm flanges, which are Tri-lobe type.

These SEEMED to be better, as I didn't kill one all year until now.

I thought about shaft length, but thought that as I'd gone longer on the bottom (S3 wishbones) and slightly shorter on the top that it should be OK. I guess I'll need a ramp / pit to check if there's any plunge movement, otherwise with the wheels hanging it won't be a true check.

Shame I can't fit 6 speed shafts and output flanges, but I'm sure I read somewhere the diff unit is wider on the 6 speeds :(

if you were killing previous cv's and still doing it on larger/later ones, I would seriously look at the plunge length dude..

Cheers Bill, Will check it out.

How much 'float' would You be looking for roughly on the shaft?

what I did to check same on badgerwagen is undo CV hub nut so the shaft could float in and out.
car on the ground, on its own weight.. so ride height etc is its loaded level... push in the shaft towards the box and see what travel it has before "locking", and judge that against the compression movement as the cars would "lean" over in a bend etc
difficult to describe a length but its should have ample movement inward before the CV bottoms out.

    nope.
its not being taken out is it, just loosened, and not driven on it

just loosened so he can check what free play is in the shafts inboard CV.. outer cv should have no play in and out, inner is designed to have plunge also..

Sorry to hear you've run into more problems again. Have you thought about changing to six seed box? I guess then it'd mean a new diff, gear linkage ect..
Hope you get it sorted for tomorrow, how long is your car going to be with Niki?
Thanks for helping out on SCN aswell.

If you need to use a 4 post drive on ramp then dad says you can use his, otherwise I can ring Nigel if you want. Sure it won't be a problem.

Have fun today fat boy, I'll ring you at least 5 times.

Good luck! Niki got a maximum of 352bhp from my Hybrid LCR before mapping it to a safe 330bhp.

Think the only difference between mine and your setup is I am running BAM pstons and a SEM with 76mm FMIC piping - am very interested to see what you get!

Oh and on a side note, my driveshaft to gearbox bolts all came loose, nearly carved a hole in my gearbox! Have loctited them in now so hopefully they will stay put....

ok ta. Only asking 'cos when I changed my CV boot the ELSA manua said the world will end or you will damage your wheel bearings if you rest the vehicle on the bearing with out the hub nut done up.

EDIT: And good luck today with it Prawny!

311bhp on my hybrid k03 on lupo from 18psi boost which is hotside restricted but otherwise, clipped RS6 turbine and 2283 same as prawnies is (I think? unless its changed spec dan?)

wellys had done 340+bhp but too hot for us to believe it was going to be reliable. Turned down to 332bhp way back 2+ years ago. Lest we forget this is'nt new territory here.

LCR posted above same spec (ie the Badger5 spec hybrid) was 350bhp but also deemed to be unreliable if left at that level and turned down to 330bhp level.... spookily similar numbers dont ya think.

Be interesting to see what niki gets out of it today.....

fingers crossed for a happy crustacean

Yes Bill it's identical to yours.

Unfortunately I can't see ground breaking figures being produced ie 360bhp+ at a sustainable level. I'm sure it will be impressive but the k04 got capped like bill said a couple of years back.

That seems like a long time and many many turbos ago! lol

I think around the 330's is where these things are at the happy balance of not flat out, but making good power.

Although Prawny will have a large port AGU manifold which should help overall flow.
