Seems a bit meaningless as a 'standalone' story - would be interesting to compare those figures to the local council/other municipal bodies to see what their costs are.

I hardly see this as meaningless when its costing us for there stupid feckups james, come on get real, if we can get it right surely they also can do this, not once have I ever picked up the wrong pump & no I'm not mister perfect by a long chalk mate, but it takes a real dumbass to get that wrong, seriously it does.

& also I'd agree be interesting to see how much the councils waste, its a fair bit tbh from what I've seen so far on pointless work.

I didn't mean it was meaningless in that sense. But with no other figures given as a comparison it is, for instance, what do all UK motorists spend doing this? Or the Ambulance service? Or Local councils etc - see what I mean?

I bet the figure UK motorists pay each year for filling up with the wrong fuel is huge, and in proportion to the miles driven I expect the cost of the Police doing it are just relative.

Big difference between us doing it & the police/councils etc doing it, its wasting our tax money that can be better spent on actually improving the roads & hospitals etc etc, if we screw up our own car through stupidity then it doesnt affect everyone else in the country does it mate, cant be said for the govermental side of this discussion, but I hear yer.

The difference is that if you or I fill up with the wrong fuel we foot the bill. If as in this case the Police are doing it (fairly regularly by the sounds of it) we indirectly still pick up the bill.

More serious, what if they fill up on the wrong fuel and get called to an emergency and then break down. Doesn't bare thinking about

Thats such old news its untrue but anyway, must be a slow week for headlines.

I've never filled the cars at work up with wrong fuel but I have seen a couple of occasions when its been done.

All our pandas and vans are diesel so its not hard to use the right pump. However when its the end of a 12 hour shift and stupid o'clock in the morning I can have some sympathy when people do it as filling a car is an autopilot type process. Dont forget every Police officer pays tax too and has to foot the bill also.

There are far more severe wastes of public money going on though, someone mis-filling a police vehicle is a drop in a very big expensive ocean.

@ NHN - I hear exactly what you are saying and do agree. But at the end of the day, the police, like any public service recruit from the public. So if 0.1% (for instance) of the public miss fuel cars then by definition 0.1% of the police will too! It's unavoidable really I think.

Its only a matter of time till I get sent on a 'car fuelling awareness course' at great expense to the tax payer now I'm sure!.

I wont be able to fill a car up till I've completed....and passed the course.

Tom, some good points & maybe old news but still its alot of money to waste dont you think & I for one dont think they're alone with this stupid mistake.

Just imagine it the common sense of actually installing a system where you cant use the wrong fuel pump, ah that would be to much common sense right, bet it would cost alot less to implement than what it costs each year to repair.

Also I'd like to add I used to do 14-18 hour days in my early days filling up 2-3 times a day & I didnt mistake which fuel, so using the 12 hour line for me isnt an excuse sorry mate & I was doing some fairly hard work as many other do around the country, not knocking what you do but tbh I cant see how they could do it so many times.

I agree, but there are people taking the micky more than the Police are making mistakes when it comes to public money.

When we fuel up our vehicles we have a little tag that we have to press up to a box to activate the pump. The tag gets read and the miles need to be entered on the key pad and our collar numbers entered before the pump switches on. The tags obviously log the vehicle details onto the system to record miles/fuel used etc, I cant see why there cant be something on there that states what fuel the vehicle uses. If it could be done you could set it so it only turns the diesel pump on if its a diesel car meaning you cant fill with unleaded etc. Or failing that a loud beep and a message on the screen saying 'only fill with diesel' or something to remind people what to put in. I'm sure it could be done, just set the tags for the diesel cars to run the diesel pump only and the unleaded ones to only run the unleaded pumps.

Its very rare still, considering the amount of fill ups that take place daily on every Police vehicle in the country. I'm not trying to make excuses for when it happens but I can sympathise with people for it (regardless of job) if they're knackered and just want to get home etc. We've not had a car filled up wrong in a good couple of years now (where I work).

    Cheers :)

In practice though I'm sure there would have to be a highly expensive business plan put together to sort it out and a very highly paid team of contract project managers to 'implement' it....it'll take 4 years to finish and break every time someone tries to fill a car up

all you would have to do is make different shape nozzle's at the garage and manufacturers make different petrol caps on the cars it wouldn't cost any extra money to do how thick of the motoring industry....
ie, petrol round ,diesel oval, and so on .....
