Yup you can buy them from Ebay. I got my 8000k bulbs and they look brilliant (see my sig pic below). If you're searching for 6000k's then search '6000k D2S' on Ebay and a whole bunch will come up. Mine were only £20 delivered.

Which xenon has gone? Driver or passenger? You can change the driver one easily but the passenger one you have to take the battery out to allow more room for your hand and then it's simples from there.

Once you take the plastic cap off which covers the back of the headlight you'll see a red and black coloured plug, this is the xenon plug. Twist the plug and pull and it will come off. Remember how the plug came off ie. which angle it came off at (i think the plug is lying on its side and it twists to a straight face on angle and pulls off?)

Then you'll see a black twist cap around the back of the bulb, this can be quiet tough to twist and claw your fingers onto so be prepared to hurt your fingers a little bit lol. This cap then comes off and take bulb out. Put new bulb in the hole, get the plastic cap on the back of it again, but you have to line the cap onto it like a jigsaw if you get what i mean? That can be quite fiddly but you'll get there. As soon as its on you then twist it to lock and you'll feel it grab on. Then get the red and black plug on, stick it on at the angle it came off as earlier and twist it on to how it first was sitting.

Sorry if i've confused the twisting business but you'll get exactly what i mean when it's in front of you!

    Hope that helps.

are you facelift or pre-facelift S3?
On my pre facelift it is really a bumper off and lights out job to replace the Xenons.
As for doing it yourself then yes go for it, it is no different to changing the halogen bulbs. you just need to disconnect the plug from the back of the bulbs, twist the retainer, remove bulb then refit the new one.
And as with the Halogens, make sure not to touch the glass.

If you don't get it sorted before you go work on your nights stick your bottom fogs on. If police stop you then explain the bulb went whilst you were driving and the only way you could emit enough light to drivers was through the fogs and to also ensure they don't mistake you for a motorcycle with one light on!

It worked for me when it happened!

    Cheers matey!

What Ross up there said ^^ try not to touch the glass of the bulb and always hold from the bottom base.

6000k are pretty much pure white. 8000k gives you the hint of blue in them.

    Ebay Item Number: 140379596979

I bought the bulbs from Ebay for 20quid delivered. Only problem i have is when i first switch them on they flicker and dont come on, the bulb warning light on dash comes on, leave the switch in the same full position, wait 10 seconds and then switch from sidelight to full again and they turn on! People on here have this problem with the aftermarket xenon bulbs, it's probably because Audi made the car in such a way that it only likes its own original bulbs! I stuck the originals back in to test them and they worked fine like normal. It's just these aftermarket ones they don't like! There's nothing you can do to resolve it but it's not hard waiting 10 seconds and turning the switch.

The bulbs don't look that blue, that's just the camera lens sucking in alot of the blue output the bulbs give. They're very bright white with a hint of blue and look perfect.

One of mine did this for about 6 months until it stopped coming on at all and I ended up getting a new head light unit... I think it was the ballast, but it was mid winter and I needed to use the car so just bought a new unit - not cheap at 600ish quid.

One thing of note, the higher the kelven rating of a bulb the less visible light it emits... S3 headlights are fairly piss poor at best and the std bulb is 4300k... Most say 6000k is about the limit if you want to actually be able to see at night... 8000k may look cool but will give you much less light on the road...

DON'T GET 8000K BULBS WHATEVER YOU DO!

The higher the kelvin (k) rating, the less light output you get from the bulb. There's a reason why ALL manufacturers fit 4300k from the factory: because it gives you the most useable light. If you fit 8000k bulbs you will look like a chav/taxi driver. The amount of glare from 8000k bulbs is terrible, and on wet roads you will just blind other road users and won't be able to see ****.

5000k bulbs are the best trade-off, the light is pure white and you still retain nearly all the OEM lighting ability. 6000k is acceptable anything higher than that and you'll look stupid.

If you're doing it purely for looks, then there's something wrong with you as headlights are there to help you see.

I agree with Paul, the 6000k and 8000k may look nice but they don't show up on the road as well as a 4300k or 5000k. I've just got some philips 85122 d2s bulbs which are 4100k, not the whitest but work very well. Philips also make 85122+ which are 4300k, more oem like the osram's.
As d2s bulb age the kelvins increase so the colour changes depending on what you started off with

i run 8k`s and have no problems seeing where im going! i have 6k on my van too and again have no problems.

and the glare thing is no different to the likes of ranges, mercs etc with hids fitted as standerd, so i aint botherd! there is a big misconception about HID head lighs from when they came out in the early days when anything other than 4300k were poop due to ballast technology!

They higher k you go the less you can see im not denying..... i have worked my way up from 4300ks and think the difference in seeing the road between 8ks and 43k`s is minute other than the colour!

All manufacturers use 4300k bulbs, the purple/blue you sometimes see in xenon equipped cars is because of the projector cutoff, it has nothing to do with the bulb. From close up all HID's will look white/yellowy but from a distance I guarantee that even our humble S3's will look slightly purple. Get a mate to drive your car towards you from a distance and you'll see the colour in the cutoff. The S3's projectors aren't very good which is why they don't emit much colour or light, but by putting higher kelvin bulbs you'll just be making things worse.

Manufacturers/bulb makers spend millions in research & development, yet this man has all the answers :anbet:

lol i knew this debate was going to kick off.

I don't know why people say the projector lamps we have are **** and light comes out blurry because mine arent? I don't blind other people on the road and it emits enough light for me and can see everything perfectly. Its up to how people feel about them though but im fine with mine. And no, they don't look chavvy, i guess its down to personal preference at the end of the day.

Xenons will only hurt your eyes if they aren't aligned properly or in non projector headlamps.

Fantastic response from a man who clearly doesn't know what he's talking about and who appears semi-literate at best. Enjoy your chav lights pal :icon_thumright:

I have unbranded D2S bulbs and they've not given me a problem in over 2 years in any of the 4 different cars I've fitted them.

The projectors in the S3 aren't particularly clear, and the cutoff is fuzzy with hotspots. The Honda S2000 is recognised as having the best headlights and compared to the S3 the light output/colour/cutoff is amazingly sharp:

This is all from the factory 4300k bulb.

Also, don't assume that you're not blinding anyone, there's a distinct difference between glare and proper light. Each to their own and all that, but I just don't see why someone would want to put less functional bulbs in a car?

They're probably identical, but mine were from a different company. They're all manufactured in the Far East either way. Like I said I've had no problems at all and I've put them in my A4, my first S3, my R32 and my current S3.
