Please explain VAG-com - the basics

I've recently bought an Audi and have just found this forum.
For new users like me, I was wondering if somebody could state the uses/benefits of having VAG-com.

So far i can see that it can diagnose problems with your vehicle but what else can it do?

Can it be used to remap the ecu to increase/power torque?

Do you have to have a laptop or will a desktop and a long cable be ok or do you have to use the software on the move sometimes?

You need a laptop to get the most from it!

You can not remap the car with VAG-COM either. You can program certain functions in the car, such as to lock the doors after 15mph, set the alarm to beep when locking the doors from the key .etc.
